Gelt Program

The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Commencement

Class

Daniel and JacquieOne of our most important graduation traditions took place last Wednesday, right after Tefillah, when seniors' families and friends were invited to a Siyum--the ceremony held after completing a large body of Jewish text.  The Class of 2010 culminated their studies with a passage from Masechet Sukkah, exploring the differing views of practical construction and abtract philosophy that are so necessary as components of a well-balanced structure.

One after another, each senior was called up to receive a certificate celebrating his or her work, each introduced by a different teacher. All the teachers knew their respective seniors personally and tailored their goodbyes to the seniors' individual challenges and successes. Mr. Dale Griffith presented Zach Kamin as Wallace Stevens' "The Man With the Blue Guitar"; to Jacob Rabinowitz--our alumnus "Most Likely To Become President"--he gave the YABA and Shoshannacharge to make each and every decision as the moral compass of the nation.  Rabbi "YABA" Ben-Avraham recalled fondly Shoshana Coven's many insights into Torah and philosophy in their weekly minchah jams, while Ms. Becky Charous spotlighted ten-season all-star athlete Jessica Rosenberg.  Former dancer Mr. Bruce Scher described Arianna Rozen, who "dances like no one is watching," and physics devotee Louis Shekhtman was sent off with cheers and laughter by Mrs. Eliaser's affectionate "Instructions For Being Louis"--as seen by the hero-worshipping eyes of his littlest fan.  No introduction was like any other; all were perfectly matched to the student, whose uniqueness we treasure and whose paths to success we remember fondly.

Teachers

LineYasher koach to Brett Riederman, Ari Eisenstadt, Hannah Miller, and Jacquie Zaluda, our keynote graduation speakers, highlighting their dreams and those of their classmates, and noting that when we have the will, dreams become reality.  Many thanks to Samantha Aisen, who presented the stunning collage of CJHS history in the form of a t-shirt quilt as the class gift from our 39 graduates.  From the old maroon colors that no other graduates will have seen, to the smashing black and blue basketball regalia from this year's IHSA champions, no other class will quite "DIG" CJHS in the same way.

Bye bye, now!

Thus departs the class who walked our sifrei Torah from Graduatesour old home at Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation ten miles to our new Deerfield campus.  From the tight camaraderie (and bone-breaking congestion!) of the One Hallway, from Hanna Sacks Bais Yaakov and Regina Dominican High School, from the docks of Wuhan to the suburbs of the North Shore, the Class of 2010 has come together to make our school what it is today.  In one night, we bid farewell to four of our pioneer families: the RecessionalHippses, the Levins, the Kikens, and the Silvers, all Nachshon families who enrolled in a non-existent school with only a nominal freshman class and now graduate their youngest members from a flourishing Jewish day school.  To them and those who follow them do we dedicate the future, to fulfill the dream we promised and delivered, and in which we all now walk.

Award

On Memorial Day, CJHS senior/graduate Rena Forester received the Jeffrey Werner Outstanding Youth Award from the Village of Deerfield.  The award, which included a scholarship, was presented to Rena at the village's Memorial Day commemoration, and was presented to her by Chris Foltz, Chairman of Deerfield's Community Relations Committee.  At a breakfast earlier that morning, village officials and committee members praised Rena and commented on how proud they were to have such an outstanding young resident in the village.

Bike the Drive

Bike the Drive

Sunday, May 30, was the annual Bike the Drive, when Lake Shore Drive was closed from 5 a.m. until 10 a.m.    20,000 riders of all ages rode on a beautiful day for riding.  CJHS riders Adam Schrag, his brother Ron Schrag (CJHS '09), Bike the DriveYoni Gabel, Jeremy Hipps, his father and sister, and Dr. Gary Auslander completed the ride, raising over $1,200 for Chai Lifeline.  All told, there were 120 riders who rode to raise money for Chai Lifeline which collected over $25,000 in donations. The CJHS riders met up with alumni Seth Berkman ('08) and Avra Shapiro ('09) at the Museum of Science and Industry. Everyone who rode had a great time and pledged to ride again next year and try to get even more participation from CJHS students, faculty and alumni.

Faculty in the News

Jack Miller, a benefactor and friend of CJHS, invited social studies teacher Mr. Harvey Gross to participate in a workshop on Civics Education in mid-May.  The workshop, which was held in the Standard Club, brought together judges, scholars and teachers from universities across the country.  Mr. Gross was part of a panel which included Federal Appeals Court Judge Marjorie Rendell, a professor from the University of Virginia, and a scholar from the Jack Miller Center for Teaching the Founding Principles of the United States.  Notably, CJHS was the only secondary school invited to participate!

Mr. Gross

"It was exciting to exchange so many ideas which will be brought back to our courses on Political Science an AP Government," Mr. Gross reports.  "The work will continue this summer at a full-week seminar at Roosevelt University, which I will assist in leading.  I am very grateful to the Jack Miller Center for facilitating our involvement in these wonderful programs."

Chemistry

Congratulations to Joseph Waldman, CJHS class of '05, Purdue University class of '10!   Joseph has just graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from Purdue. During this time he also worked at Lyondellbasell Industries. He has a job, starting this week, at UOP, an engineering design contractor in Des Plaines. Joe will be working on projects all over the world including process control in chemical engineering.

Shalom from Richard Kahn (CJHS '08), who will be attending the Kupcinet-Getz International Science School  at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot with about 40 other undergraduate  students from around the world this summer. He'll be living in Rehovot and working in an organic chemistry lab with Professor Ronny Neumann, researching metallic complexes as catalysts for oxidation of alkanes into alcohols.

Shai Kamin (CJHS '08) will also be on campus at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, researching photodynamic therapy with Professors Yoram Salomon and Avigdor Schertz. Photodynamic therapy is a type of cancer therapy that uses light sensitive agents, implanting them in the body and shining certain types of light upon them so that they release toxins to kill nearby cells.
Summer Torah Study

cjhs.imageIf you're in town this summer, why not do something with your Wednesday nights?  CJHS teacher Shira Eliaser and CJHS parent Dr. Elysa Barack Fisher continue the LifeCenter Torah Network with the Summer Series 2010:

Esther:
The Power Behind the Throne

Throughout the summer, we will be exploring the drama and comedy of Megillat Esther, with insights from traditional and modern commentaries.  Advance registration is highly recommended so that we don't run out of chairs.  Earlybirds are welcome: the first session begins on Wednesday, June 9!  Click here for details and registration.

Greater Chicago Jewish Folk Arts Festival

FestivalCJHS is looking for parents, students, teachers and board members to help promote our school at the Greater Chicago Jewish Folk Arts Festival.  This biennial event will be on Sunday, June 13, from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Cook County Forest Preserve (Oakton Street west of Lehigh).  Similar to years past, CJHS will have an information booth at the Organizational Fair.  This is an important opportunity for us to reach out to the 10,000+ participants who will be attending this year's event.  We're looking for volunteers to help manage the booth for one hour at a time.  You'll be asked to pass out information and talk to those interested in learning more about CJHS.

Please email Rachel Spiro, rspiro@cjhs.org, with your availability.

Alumni Trivia

Cute CoupleHannah Berkowicz ('07) and Brian Pogrund ('07) were indeed given job offers as dance plants and party hosts, to be the beautiful and well-dressed couple that gets the party started and inspires all the other guests to join in!  As flattering as the offer was, though, both alumni have opted for other careers instead.  Hannah wants to be a teacher: now a senior at UIUC, she is majoring in elementary education.  Hannah will be in town this summer, doing research for a professor at Northwestern and serving as a T.A. in the Center for Talent Development.  Hannah is looking forward to the warm weather and spending time with family and friends whom she doesn't see all year round!

Brian is starting his senior year at the University of Michigan, where he is majoring in organizational studies.  He will be working this summer as a marketing intern at Safco Dental Supply and is looking for an entry-level sales position for this December, when he is set to graduate.

Good luck, Hannah and Brian!
Shabbat Shalom and Tzeitchem L'Shalom
