P. O. Corner
Gelt Program
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com. Need stationery? Holiday cards? Family tributes? Order cards from the P.O.! Click herefor more information. |

Cinco de Mayo
On Wednesday, Cinco de Mayo, Chef Laura Frankel, mother of sophomore Jonah "Cesar" Frankel, dazzled the second year Spanish class with her culinary skills. Chef Laura did a mini lesson on the origin of vanilla, how to keep your hands from smelling when you chop a jalapeno (wash hands with cold water before chopping) and how to cut an avocado and remove the pit without cutting yourself. Chef Laura prepared churros (a Spanish class favorite) and guacamole. The students were attentive and are hoping that other cooking classes are in their future. The churros were eaten as fast as she could prepare them, and the guacamole and chips were deliciosos. Sra. Brejcha hopes that her students will whip up a treat for their mothers on Mother's Day!

The first year Spanish class joined the third year Spanish class to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The rain stopped just in time for the annual breaking of the piñata. The first year class brought a Dora Exploradora piñata and the third year class a Diego piñata to honor classmates Jonah "Diego" Harris and Danielle "Dora" Geraty. The third year class brought lots of treats, and the first year class enjoyed eating them. A good time was had by all. |
Write on for Israel
Three CJHS seniors graduated from Write On for Israel last Thursday evening. Peri Axelrod, Naseem Parsa and Jacquie Zaluda completed the two-year Israel education and advocacy fellowship that prepared them to take leadership roles in the pro-Israel community on college campuses and beyond. Peri will enroll at Michigan State University and Naseem will enroll at American University, while Jacquie will begin a 10-month mechina program in Israel before being drafted into the IDF. Peri summed up her Write On experience by saying, "Thanks to Write On, I can express my love for Israel in a more constructive manner. Learning about Israel has created a solid foundation to nurture my continually growing love for Israel." Congratulations, Write On for Israel alumni!
Write-On is now accepting applications from sophomores for entry into the program next year! For details, talk to Naseem, Jacquie, Peri or any of the seven juiniors enrolled in the program. You can also check it out at www.writeonchicago.org.

CJHS Walks for Israel

Congratulations to all our students and communities who participated in the various JUF Walks With Israel this past Sunday. The spirit which we encountered on the road was as beautiful as the weather we had to walk in! A special yasher koach goes to the twelve members of the CJHS vocal ensemble, who sang at the festivities accompanying the North Suburban Walk. Good job, everyone! |

Letters About Literature
Congratulations to Ariel Stoltz who has been named as a Level III Semi-Finalist for Letters about Literature. This year, Illinois students set an all time high in the number of entries received by one state - a phenomenal 6,307 letters! The judging process consists of several rounds. Before coming to each state, the letters go through two rounds of judging at the National headquarters which selects the letters that will be passed on to each state for the third round of judging. Ariel wrote a letter to Markus Zusak, author of The Book Thief. This is the second time Ariel has received writing honors in this contest: last year, he was a finalist with a paper that he wrote on James McBride's The Color of Water. |

This Week in Sports

Congratulations to our second ever women's badminton team on a first-class season. Our team finished against Maine East last week, after a hard-fought season. Way to go, team! Many thanks to coach Nancy Dorfman-Schwartz for a much-improved season.
The women's soccer team has been battling hard against tough opposition from Chicago Hope, Lake Forest, and Highland Park High School. Come out to the field as we cheer on our Tigers against arch-rival Ida Crown Academy this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. And get your blue ribbons ready for next Tuesday, when our girls head to Cristo Rey for our first-ever regional soccer tournament. Go Tigers!

Greater Chicago Jewish Folk Arts Festival
CJHS is looking for parents, students, teachers and board members to help promote our school at the Greater Chicago Jewish Festival. This biennial event will be on Sunday, June 13 from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Cook County Forest Preserve (Oakton Street West of Lehigh). Similar to years past, CJHS will have an information booth at the Organizational Fair. This is an important opportunity for us to reach out to the 10,000+ participants who will be attending this year's event. We're looking for volunteers to help manage the booth for one hour at a time. You'll be asked to pass out information and talk to those interested in learning more about CJHS. Please email Rachel Spiro, rspiro@cjhs.org, with your availability. |
Bike for Chai Lifeline
Become a Chai Cyclist: ride with CJHS on Chicago's Bike the Drive on Sunday, May 30, to raise money for Chai Lifeline. Experienced and novice cyclists are welcome. This is not a race; you can choose your own distance to ride with over 20,000 riders. See Chicago in a unique way, as there will be no cars on Lake Shore Drive during the ride times. Support the families of Chai Lifeline. Please see Jeremy Hipps or Dr. Auslander for more information.

Give a Cheer: Your Calendar is Here!
Summer is nearly on the horizon, and we know you're already planning for next year. CJHS is pleased to share our year-at-a-glance calendar, posted at www.cjhs.org/pdf/5771, which contains a wide variety of important school dates. These dates have also been marked on Trumba for next year. |
Alumni Trivia
Ari Frankel, CJHS '08, was the eminence gris behind "Person of the Week." Ari is now in his second year at MIT, where he is majoring in nuclear science and fission engineering. This summer, Ari intends to work on a research project in fusion reactors. He is also an active member of AEΠ. Correction: Last week's Alumni Trivia was Josh Warshawsky and Seth Berkman, class of '08, not class of '07. E-news apologizes for the error. |
