Gelt Program

TheP.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Wagner InstituteUpon entering CJHS on any given day, it's not uncommon to be dazzled by the presence of vibrant Jewish minds deep in study. But this past Sunday and Monday, CJHS truly radiated.

At the two-day JTS Isidor and Ruth Wagner Institute at CJHS, faces both familiar and new--andminds both seasoned and budding--gatheredfor the rare opportunity to explore Jewish texts and beliefs with some of theleading scholars in the Jewish world today.

Wagner Institute

Endowed by Nate Wagner and Ruth Braver, the Wagner Institute has been a staple of JTS's continuing education for adults for over 15 years and has always been held in New York at the Seminary. This year, CJHS was thrilled by the Wagners' decision to bring the Institute to Chicago and hold it at our school and with our community.During the two days of the Wagner Institute, over 120 people participated in the programming, and on Monday, the junior and senior classes attended the sessions and were paired with adult participants to do hevruta-style learning.JTS faculty and community members were impressed by the depth of knowledge of the CJHS students.

"Hosting the Wagner Institute at CJHS brought myriad communities together to study, to pray, and to discuss sacred texts and sacred obligations. Our students are incredibly fortunate to participate in this multi-generational learning, to observe the commitments of others in the community, and to imagine how they might continue their own lifelong learning after they graduate from Chicagoland Jewish High School," remarked Stephanie Smerling, CJHS's Director of Institutional Advancement, who worked with the JTS staff and the Wagners to organize the Institute.

Guided by the Jewish Theological Seminary's most distinguished rabbis and professors,Wagner participants examined significant issues facing Conservative Judaism in today's society and contemplated the steps necessary to Wagner Institutemove forward. The challenge is great, but it was evident that there is passion and desire to move ahead and develop communities that will allow our young people to experience Judaism rooted in tradition while clearly planted in the modern world.
Wagner Essay Winners

Wagner Winners

Congratulations to Nina Kiken, Ari Eisenstadt, and Gabe Rubin, winners of the Wagner Institute Essay Contest! As a highlight of this past weekend's Wagner Institute at CJHS, the Wagner family graciously established two $5,000 college scholarship awards for CJHS students, one for a current junior and one for a current senior. Nina and Ari tied for the senior scholarship, and will share their essay contest award. Each of the three students wrote a moving piece on an issue in contemporary Judaism. Nina wrote about modern Zionism, while Ari described renewed religiosity, and Gabe focused on Shabbat communities. In addition to receiving the contest awards, the winners also took part in a special certificate ceremony at the Wagner Institute on Sunday, where they read their essays aloud to the Wagners, JTS faculty, and program participants.
Yom HaAtzmaut

Blue

In celebration of Israel's 62 years, CJHS welcomed Northbrook resident Alfy Nathan to share his personal experiences as a chalutz before the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948.A lifelong Zionist, he participated in Mossad LeAliyah Bet in France, helping Holocaust survivorsreach Israel. Many thanks to Mr. Nathan for his story of three continents' worth of action and intrigue.

White TeamHaving scarfed down their falafel sandwiches and blue and white birthday cake, our regional teams vied with each other for Israel points in the all-school trivia contest. Do you know when the First Zionist Congress convened? Do you know the controversial articles of the Likud charter? Freshman Benjy Noy and English teacher Ms. Friedman do, and they helped lead their team towards victory.

Ashdod

Armed with posters, cheers, and team colors, our eight teams representing different cities spent the rest of a beautiful Tuesday afternoon in the first annual Yom HaAtzmaut soccer tournament! Each team also had the opportunity to earn extra Israel points for sportsmanship, team spirit, and the decidedly un-Israeli ability to sit down quietly and listen to the harried judges.

Soccer1

The ferocious soccer match ended in a tie between the unstoppable Team Tel Aviv (purple) and the equally fierce Team Ashdod (pink). In the end, though Tel Aviv wonthe day on the strength of its indefatigable cheerleaders, its habit of cheering, "G-O-O-D T-R-Y, good try, good try, good try!"for every much-loved opponent, and the willingness of its faculty advisors to dance the Yo-Ya in the final Israeli dance festival that ended the afternoon.

Achla sabbaba
to purple cheer captains Miranda "2-4-6-8" Borkan, Erik "Poster Boy" Howden, Steve "The Face Paint" Edelman, Reby "Shout Out" Silverman, Hannah "The Flower Girl" Bomben, Zoe "The Kick Line" Goldhirsh, Benji "Woot Woot" Noy,and Lisa"Dah Dah Dah Dah"Wiznitzer. And fifty EuroCup points to Jaclyn Meyers, Michael Jacobson, Sammy Simon, Miranda Smerling, Aaron Zell, Sam Botbol, Jacob Rabinowitz, Jake Levine, Kevin Rahmanim, Danny Stamos, and Julia Perelmanfor an amazing game of soccer!

Purple

Kol hakavod to LeeTal Gabel and Va'ad Israel, along with Gvt. Cohen and Gvt. Moskovich for an unforgettable day.
Earth Day
Green teamJulia Perelman has been hard at work with the environmental club to make Earth Day a day to remember. Spring decorations, fun facts about the environment, political food for thought, and quotes from The Lorax adorned the hallways and whiteboards of every room.A special outdoor Tefillah gave students a chance to appreciate the world around them. English classes had the opportunity towatch aspecial nature-themed movie, and a team trivia competition spurred all of our green teams to figure out what they could do to promote sustainable practices in their own lives.
CJHS Green Tips
  • Brown bagging it again? Bring utensils from home instead of using plastic ones, and get a parent to buy you a plastic sandwich case instead of using all those little baggies. Let's keep the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from growing any larger.
  • Picking up your resident Tiger? Turn off your engine while waiting. Fewer engine fumes mean cleaner air for our soccer players!
  • Reuse a posterboardfrom top of the cabinets in Room 314 for your next project.
Koby Mandell Foundation
KMFHEALING, HOPE, AND LIGHT - these are what the Koby Mandell Foundation in Israel brings to the kids and families who have lost a loved one in a terrorist attack. Our own Va'ad Israel is committed to raising $2,000 so that a grieving Israeli child can attend the wonderful, healing Camp Koby this summer. The Va'ad is selling Sherri Mandell's award-winning book The Blessing of a Broken Heart, in order to raise the necessary funds.Several members of the Va'ad presented a brief program - including the showing of a DVD on Camp Koby - to the students and faculty during an extended t'filah last Friday. The response of the CJHS community is encouraging, but we still have a long way to go before we are able to reach our goal of providing a lifeline to an Israeli child who has lost so much.Va'ad Israel members will be delighted to put this remarkable book in your hands! Please help us make this important fundraiser a success!

Va'ad Tefillah Shabbaton

Twelve members of theVa'ad Tefillahspent this pastShabbatin Skokie. The students had a chance to spend time with each other and evaluate their own personal connection to prayer. They had the opportunity of attendingKehillat Shalomand were warmly welcomed intoKehillat Shalom's Shabbatcommunity. The students would like to thank Rabbi Barkan and Rabbi Ben-Avraham (YABA) for joining them forShabbat, and the Spiro family for hosting the rabbis. Also, thank you to the Swatez family and the Sklar family for hosting the students.

Women's SoccerSays "W"

With picture-perfect weather, the spring sports teams continue to enjoy successful seasons.

The Women's Soccer team recorded its first win last Thursday with a win against Winnetka's North Shore Country Day last Thursday. After setbacks against Ida Crown on Sunday and a seasoned Woodlands Academy team on Monday, the team showed it's for real by defeating an experienced Cristo Rey team on Tuesday. The team plays again next week against Niles West on Monday, again against Lake Forest Academy on Tuesday, and against the Willows Academy on Thursday--all home games. You go, girls!!

cjhs.image

The Men's Tennis Team played a lot of tennis this week with three matches. Senior Matt Levin extended his winning streak to four matches by besting his opponent at Highland Park on Monday, only to see his first loss on Wednesday against a very strong North Shore Country Day team on Wednesday. The team was much more evenly matched against Loyola Academy where it played on Thursday. The team hits the road next week with matches at Lake Forest Academy on Monday and Elgin Academy on Thursday.

cjhs.imagePlaying against a large public school can be trying, as the Women's Badminton team found out on Monday at Lake Forest High School. The CJHS team members showed that they can play, despite the formidable opponents. On Thursday the team hosted the smaller Golder College Prep and fared much better. The team travels on Monday to Buffalo Grove High School and on Wednesday to Maine East.

While volleyball is one of the most difficult sports technically to master, the players on the new Men's Volleyball team is coming up to speed very quickly and improving with each game. After playing a more experienced Westminster Christian team on Monday, the team fared much better against Cristo Rey at home on Tuesday. The JV team recorded its first win thanks, in part, to the excellent leadership of junior Kevin Rahmanim, and the varsity team came very close, but had to settle for an anti-climactic finish. The team hosts St. Martin de Porres next Tuesday in a highly anticipated rematch.

The process of establishing a non-profit definitely requires a lot of work, but I have no doubt that it will prove to be rewarding at the end."Good luck, Vanessa!
