Gelt Program
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com. Need stationery? Holiday cards? Family tributes? Lest We Forget
Courage, love of Jewish learning, and a zest for life - all these characterize the remarkable Margot Walton, who spoke to the CJHS student body and staff on Tuesday, in commemoration of Yom HaShoah. We listened in awed silence, as Mrs. Walton related the horrifying and amazing story of her survival. Adding to the extraordinary recounting was the revelation that the grandmother of our own Sonia Levy, mother of student Nicolas Levy, had - at the risk of her own life - saved the lives of Margot and her sister.
So that the world never forgets, we will remember.
Our thanks for this week's Yom Hashoah program should be directed to Ms. Lynn Friedman who organized this whole program, and Ms. Stephanie Smerling for her personal connection to the speaker through her prior work at the Holocaust Museum. The image of Margo Walton standing before the whole school in Tefillah between Sonia and Nic Levy -- the descendants of the family who saved her life -- will remain with us as a clear and precious memory. These survivors' stories are our people's precious legacy that strengthen us as we continue to struggle towards making a better world. |

JTS Wagner Institute
This weekend, come study with the preeminent scholars of the Jewish Theological Seminary--right here at CJHS.
The Wagner Institute will provide a dynamic forum for people to explore Jewish texts and traditions with some of the most compelling faculty of JTS, including Dr. Eitan Fishbane, Dr. Neil Gillman, Rabbi David Hoffman, Dr. Amy Kalmanofsky, Dr. David Kraemer, Rabbi Marc Wolf, and Rabbi Joel Roth. The theme for this year's Wagner Institute is Living Jewishly Today: Contemporary Conversations About Jewish Beliefs, Family and Rituals.
Through the generosity of the Wagner family, the fees for the program are $72 per participant, including texts and program meals. The program is free for students.
The Wagner Institute will take place on Sunday, April 18 and Monday, April 19. For schedules and registration, please contact Stephanie Smerling, Director of Institutional Advancement for Chicagoland Jewish High School, at 847.324.3720 or ssmerling@cjhs.org. |
Studio Art Exhibit
It's a bird, it's a plane...it's CJHS students' comic book art! Mrs. Snyder's art class had a special guest artist and intern this semester, Mr. Henry Bernstein. Mr. Bernstein worked with students to create their own comic book characters. Students made comic book covers and then had the covers enlarged to poster size. They are just amazing!
Please stop by our reception at Princeton Frame Art & Gallery, 1844 First Street in Highland Park, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21. The cover art will remain in their front window gallery for one week. |

Earth Day
Get excited because on Thursday, April 22, we will be having our first CJHS Earth Day celebration! Environmental Club has planned many special programs and activities throughout the day, including movies, games, food, and other surprises. To start off the celebration, we are asking everyone to come to school dressed in GREEN. We will be having tefillah outside in the morning, weather permitting, and there will also be a mandatory program during extended Thursday lunch outside. If you have any questions, or would like to help decorate the school or join Environmental Club, please talk to Julia Perelman. |

Newspaper Politics in Hebrew
Gvrt. Moskovich and her senior class would like to thank Mr. Carl Schrag for sharing his experiences of working as an editor of the Jerusalem Post. At the culmination of the class' unit on Israeli newspapers, including the history of the Israeli newspaper and the organization of modern newspapers, Mr. Schrag answered questions about the politics behind the most popular newspapers in Israel, the differences between Israeli newspapers and American newspapers, and the challenges he faced as an editor (all in Hebrew, of course!). The class thoroughly enjoyed hearing the firsthand experiences of an Israeli newspaper editor.

Alumni Trivia
Hail to the chief! Which of our alumni is even now president of his school's Hillel? |
CJHS Green Tips
- Throw your trash out in trash
cans, not in the recycling bins! The blue color should be an immediate clue. Every item of trash you hurl wastes an entire bin of potentially recyclable material.
- Got a poster due this term? Consider using reused posterboard! The CJHS posterboard gemach is on top of the cabinets in Room 314. Stop by and pick up an eye-catching styrofoam or cardboard posterboard whose back is ready for your colorful presentation!

In 1993, he was the recipient of an Illinois State University Outstanding Young Alumni Award. His commitment to helping young people and their parents through the college transition process and collaborating with his colleagues to ensure that all students are served is paramount to him. He is one of the founding instructors of The Academy for College Admission Counseling, which is a professional development partnership with Elmhurst College. |
Spring Sports
Spring sports are in full swing, with a record 77 student-athletes participating on four inter-scholastic teams. The Men's Tennis Team is off to a great start with its first-year coach, Christi Turdo. The team swept Vernon Hills on Monday, lost 3-2 in a close tie-breaker against Lake Forest Academy on Tuesday, and played an excellent match against a strong Glenbrook South team on Thursday. The busy schedule continues next week with matches against Highland Park on Tuesday, North Shore Country Day on Wednesday, and Loyola Academy on Thursday. Let's hope that the beautiful weather holds out for these exciting matches. While men's tennis is CJHS's oldest team, its newest team--Men's Volleyball--is also having a great season thus far. After a wake-up call-at both the JV and varsity levels-against a strong St. Edwards team on Monday, the team should fare better in its matches next week. The teams play at Westminster Christian on Monday and home against Cristo Rey on Tuesday. The Women's Badmintonhad added several new players to its ranks this year. The team played its first match on Thursday against an experienced Stevenson team. The team plays at Lake Forest High School next Monday and home against Golder College Prep on Thursday. Badminton is a great sport to watch, so come out and support your team.
Our largest team this spring, Women's Soccer, has shown that it is ready for competition with first-year coach P.J. Eagle. The team lost a close one in its home opener on Monday against Westminster Christian and triumphed against perennially strong North Shore Country Day at home on Thursday. The team plays at Ida Crown on Sunday morning, on Monday against Woodlands Academy, and on Tuesday at Cristo Rey (under the lights!). For team schedules, scores, stats, photos, and more, visit the CJHS athletics website at www.highschoolsports.net. We're always looking for more great game photos! Send links to your family photo album to seliaser@cjhs.org.
