Gelt Program

The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Model U.N. Amazes New York

Model UN

Representing the Czech Republic, the Russian Federation, and Spain, our young team of 20 students competed against 2,700 others from 240 schools. Our students began each day in prayer and then put in more than 12 hours working in committee sessions trying to solve major global problems through diplomacy, negotiation, written resolutions, and speaking. The depth and breadth of problems which they tackled were mind-boggling in proportion, from "Creating a Green New Deal" to "Reduction and Redefinition of Odious Debt."

Model UN

Whether meeting with the Ambassador of the Czech Republic at the Czech Consulate or working in committee sessions, our students exhibited exemplary people skills and academic aptitude. Everywhere they went, the directors of the conference committees sought out Dr. Auslander and Mrs. Loris to express how amazing our delegates were, how prepared, how intelligent, how respectful, and how wonderful. On the final morning, a senior staff member let slip that the authorities had voted this new CJHS team as being absolutely the nicest, most respectful, and most co-operative at the conference.

Model UNAt the closing ceremonies, our very own juniors--Julia Perelman, Adam Schneider, and Adam Seidenberg--were chosen to speak in support of their committees' resolutions, an honor of great significance; each did so with power, confidence, and skill. Additionally, senior Jacob Rabinowitz and sophomore Benjy Forester, serving on a prestigious specialized committee, were given the Award of Merit for their diplomatic efforts.

The strides we have made in two short years, the esteem in which the Conference now holds us, and the dedication and excellence which our team members put into this endeavor bode well for a dazzling future for the CJHS MUN Team.

Model UN

A resounding round of applause for our seventeen diplomats: Jacob Rabinowitz, Naseem Parsa, Aaron Miller, Maor Gordon-Guterman, Benji Fleischacker, Adam Schneider, Benjy Forester, Naomi Michael, Gabe Rubin, Iszy Licht, Mark Weiss, Claire Peaceman, Ariel Stoltz, Rachel Aaronson, Julia Perelman, Tzipi Ladin-Gross, and Nicolas Levy, and special thanks to Dr. Auslander and Mrs. Loris for all their work with our team!

Grease Full Cast

Maor at Model UNGrease!
played to a sold-out house last Sunday, March 22. Over 500 seats were filled both nights as teens, parents, grandparents, and friends rocked and rolled with the greasers and jammed at the high school hop. The 2010 production starred Maddie Klein as ingenue Sandy, Matthew Miller as greasy-haired Danny, Arianna Rozen as bad girl Rizzo, Ari Eisenstadt as tough guy Kenickie, Sara Schankerman, Talia Stoehr, and Lisa Wiznitzer as the Pink Ladies, and Noah Weinberg, Jake Rudolph, and Jordy Shapiro as the greaser boys. The show also featured a phenomenal supporting cast, including cjhs.imageAviva Schwartz as the flirty cheerleader, Miriam Maltsman as her devoted prom princess, Josh Perry as the loveable shlemiel Eugene, Melanie Israel as fiery dancing queen Cha-Cha, and a superannuated Eliana Fisher as the English teacher who can make them all behave. Also featured was juggling superstar Sammy Simon as the sleazy DJ Vince Fontaine, who can make any sock hop into a high-flying aerial sensation.
cjhs.image

A standing ovation goes to our choreographer, Dina DiCostanzo, and our dance captain, Talia Stoehr, for some of the best moves ever seen on stage at CJ. Further accolades are due to our director, Melissa Estes, and our musical director, Rich Green, for whipping a cast of angelic Jewish dance majors and math geeks into a hard-core North Side musical sensation. Thanks to all our generous underwriters, parents, staff, and volunteers, without whom this show would never have gotten off the ground. Mind those hubcaps, and go Greased Lightning!

Alumni Trivia

cjhs.imageDid you know that CJHS actually did a production of Wicked? In addition to its four full-scale audition musicals-- Little Shop of Horrors, Into the Woods, The Pajama Game, and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown--the drama class performed an on-book suite from Wicked in the spring of 2006. Which of our talented alumni played Elphaba?

Each year, students, families, and faculty go on a wonderful bike ride to raise money for Chai Lifeline. Chai Lifeline is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children suffering from serious illness. They offer a comprehensive range of services to address the multiple needs of patients, parents, and siblings.

The bike ride is Sunday, May 30 and is called Bike the Drive. The ride is a beautiful 14- or 28- mile ride along Lake Shore Drive beginning in downtown Chicago near the Buckingham Fountain. Register to be a Chai Cyclist by going to their website, and Chai Lifeline will send you everything you need. Chai Cyclist Registration deadline is Monday, May 7. You can continue to collect sponsorship money until May 28, but your initial registration must be in by May 17.

The ride is not a race, but a leisurely ride along beautiful Lake Shore Drive going south to the Science Museum or North to Hollywood Blvd. It is a lot of fun, good exercise while raising money for a worthwhile Jewish charity. For more information, contact senior biker Jeremy Hipps or Dr. Gary Auslander.

Alumni in the News
Romeo & JulietMany of our alumni have risen to office in their university's a cappella groups, and CJHS is proud to cheer on our home-grown talent. Seth Berkman ('08) and the Washington University Stereotypes came in second by a hair in this year's International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella semifinals. Seth and his friend Dithu won outstanding choreography for "Jai Ho," from Slumdog Millionaire. Their team came in second by 374 to 372--an unheard of close race. The A Capella Blog calls Seth's choreography, "by far, the most fun of the night," and awards the group no less than the highest accolades!
Registration

The 2010-2011 schedule is now underway! Please turn in your course registration forms before disappearing for Pesach break. The earlier you register, the less likely you are to experience schedule issues!

Alumni Trivia
If you were around in 2006, you'll know that Elphaba was played by several different students, as were Galinda, the wizard, Madame Morrible, and Fiyero--whose spear went missing before the performance, forcing the noble youth to defend his green-skinned damsel with a mop handle. The "Wicked" Witch of the West was played by...
cjhs.imageRenana Fox ('06), who is majoring in theater and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Renana has returned this year from studying in Barcelona; back on campus, she is the business manager for VoKols, Pitt's Jewish a cappella group.

cjhs.imageAliza Stein ('07), who's majoring in chemistry at Barnard. She has just returned from a trip to London on Music Outreach Initiative, which she organized along with Shayna Flink ('06) for Pizmon, the Jewish women's a cappella group at Barnard.
cjhs.imageYael Schwartz ('08), who's starting in the University of Michigan's School of Kinesiology after a year on Workshop at Kibbutz Ein Dor. Yael wants to study movement science in preparation for a career in medicine. When she is not counting athletes in her kinesiology classes, Yael runs peulot for Habonim Dror of Ann Arbor and works in urban renewal once a month in Detroit.
