Gelt Program
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

| There Is No Age Requirement for Giving...
Most freshmen enter high school trying to determine the best ways to study for classes, join clubs and sports, develop their social life, and manage their time. The last thing most freshmen do is notice a gap or need and throw themselves into filling it.
But then, most freshmen are not Annie Schrayer. As a student-athlete, Annie has had the opportunity to build and strengthen bonds with students at all grade levels, a highlight of the CJHS experience.
Annie has recently decided to make a multi-year gift to the CJHS Athletic Department from her Federation-managed philanthropic fund, which was built through donations she received in lieu of traditional bat mitzvah gifts.
Tim Cohen, CJHS's Athletic Director, adds, "What makes this gift so special is that it is coming from one of our own student-athletes. My own family has now been inspired by Annie's example of giving, and I am sure that she will similarly inspire many of her peers."
This gift will help to fund scholarships for athletes participating in tournaments that require travel. In addition, the gift will support the purchase of team uniforms so that our student-athletes look the part when they represent CJHS at interscholastic competitions. These two areas are close to Annie's heart.
"I wanted ALL of the CJHS athletes to be able to attend out-of-state tournaments, and I wanted all of us to look great all the time," says Annie. "Both of those things were important enough to me that I decided to use my philanthropic fund to make sure they would happen this year and for years to come--for my four years at CJHS and hopefully even longer."

"Whatever gifts the Athletic Department receives from donors," says Lynn Schrayer, Annie's mother, "the gift the students receive as participants in athletics at CJHS is much greater."
Thank you, Annie! |

All-School Shabbaton
Over seventy students sang, prayed, and chilled this past weekend at the All-School Shabbaton at the Holiday Inn Express in Palatine. In addition to fressing shwarma and singing zemirot, students got to shoot hoops at the hotel's gym and take each other down with laser tag on Saturday night. Many thanks to all the students who ran the Shabbaton almost unaided, and to Rabbi Barkan, Rabbi Goldberg, Mrs. Steinberg, Mr. Marchenko, and Mrs. Eliaser for staffing. |

Curriculum Night
Faculty, students and prospective families gathered together on Monday, February 22, for Curriculum and Beyond. New to this year's program was the addition of a mini student activities fair. The Shapiro Dining Hall was packed as 48 families wandered from table to table learning about student life at our school. They proudly displayed information about the various student groups as they engaged students in conversation about our extra-curricular programs.
Department heads discussed not only the material they teach, but also how to help students make the transition from 8th grade to high school. The students were plied with snacks, divided into teams, and led by current students into the building for a race. Each time had to complete a task led by Mr. Taylor (Biology), Ms. Friedman (English), and Rabbi Barkan (Bible). All students received a pair of CJHS sweatpants to take home.
Guests were impressed by our outstanding staff, dedication to a traditional yet progressive curriculum, and the atmosphere of compassion so readily visible to anyone who walks through the school.
Welcome, Class of 2014
Applications are still being accepted for the 2010- 2011/5771 academic year. Contact Rachel Spiro to apply or to schedule a tour. |

Students in the News
Alan Bukingolts ('09) was just named Outstanding First Year Student Award Recipient at Bradley University. This award honors academic success, leadership, and teacher recommendations. Alan is enrolled in a Pre-Education/Health Science curriculum. He very proudly said that he never would have received this award had he not attended CJHS, where he learned to work hard and to be an advocate for himself and for others on campus. Congratulations, Alan! |

Alumni Trivia
Which up and coming media arts major got his big break playing a plant at CJHS? "I got an eyelash in my eye about halfway through the first act," the ex-foliage told his admirers. "But I couldn't brush it away. R.B.J. was like, 'You are a PLANT. I will kill you if you so much as twitch!' So I had to stand there and cry it out. It was awful!" |
Prints Cover Contest
The Prints, the CJHS literary journal, is well on its way to being published! However, we still need one important thing--a piece of artwork or photography for the front and back cover! The editorial staff has chosen all pieces for the inside pages and we need one more piece to make it complete. While the journal will accept any submissions, the editors are looking for a colorful cover with a simple and strong message. (No more photos of sunsets or landscapes, please!) If you have any photography or art to submit, please submittotheprints@gmail.com or give it to Noa Fleischacker or Lizzie Spicehandler. All submissions are due by FRIDAY, MARCH 19.

Alumni Trivia
Yoni Solomon ('06) played Audrey II, the carnivorous plant in CJHS' first full-length musical, Little Shop of Horrors. He is now an advertising and accounting major at Drake, where he has performed in several main-stage plays. Yoni is graduating cum laude one semester early, and hopes his honors credentials and theater-star charm will help win him a job in this stagnant economy. Yoni sends his love to all the CJHS teachers who never gave up on him, who taught him patience, poise, and how anything is possible with enough rewrites! |
