Gelt Program
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. The Youth Philanthropy Initiative thanks everyone who came to Lemon-Aid and the staff who helped make the event happen. A special thanks to Lauren Pliskin and Alison Dreifuss for chairing the event, Alex Kosarev and Igor Burda for helping to set up the Shapiro Dining Hall.
Stay informed for more fantastic Adar fundraisers--including the teacher spelling bee next week! Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur
As part of the Chicago-wide student movement to help the people of Darfur, our CJHS STAND chapter participated in Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur Benefit Concert on Sunday, February 14. Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur is a month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for Darfuri refugee children. So far, the CJHS students in our STAND chapter have raised over $500 for this cause. Together with more than 50 schools across Chicago, Youth United for Darfur has raised $9,000. By the end of February, we hope to help raise $50,000, the amount required to fund an entire school in a Darfuri refugee camp for one year. With the support of the Chicago community, we are confident that we will be able to achieve our fundraising goal.
Our CJHS STAND chapter aims to raise $1,000 for the Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur campaign. We are halfway to our goal and hope you will consider making a contribution to this important cause. Your donation of $50, $25, or even $10 goes a long way! To make an online donation, visit www.rocknraise.org. Please select the CJHS page. You can also write a check to "Enoguh Project" and contact Jordy Shapiro, Noa Fleischacker, or Noah Weinberg for more information.
On February 25, the Illinois Holocaust Museum will host an event called Education for a Generation. This event begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be a great opportunity for students, teachers, and parents to hear founders of the Darfur Dream Team speak. Tickets are $30 for students and $40 for teachers. Please talk to Rena Forester or Noa Fleischacker for more information. |

Math and Science Opportunities for Underclassmen
Incoming freshmen, try your hand at Summer Sleuths ! Be on a team that searches for a solution to a real-world environmental problem! Investigate information from experts, experiments, and the internet with help from IMSA students and guidance from local teachers. Accept this year's challenge to help shape the future! Check the website for information on last year's problem: the Illinois Department of Transportation challenged the Sleuths to consider the possibilities of using Personal Air Vehicles -- a.k.a. flying cars -- to reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
Freshmen and sophomores, try Energy at IMSA! This program is for the serious student who is avidly interested in energy explorations and alternative possibilities. Participants will spend a week exploring energy through chemistry and physics, connecting with teachers and fellow learners. Free time activities will complement the hands-on exploration. The session will be July 12-16 at Belleville West High School. For more information visit www.imsa.edu and click on summer programs. |
Tiger Basketball
The men's basketball regular season came to an end with several important wins. On Thursday at home against Northtown Academy, the JV won 51-39. Freshman point guard Jake Newlander led the team with 13 points and numerous assists, while sharp-shooting sophomore Danny Hochberg added 10 from the outside.
The varsity also defeated a very quick Northtown Academy team on Thursday 58-53, with junior Aaron Cohn and senior Daniel Eisenberg combining for 42 of the team's points. The varsity made it five in a row on Sunday afternoon with a 59-56 win over friendly rival Fasman Yeshiva, with Cohn and Eisenberg combining for 36 of the team's points, and sophomore center Sam Botbol and junior point guard Zach Spellman each contributing 11 points. The team honored its departing seniors for their contributions to the team in an emotional half-time ceremony on Sunday. The seniors are Max Abecassis, Daniel Eisenberg, Davy Silver, Leo Spornstarr, and Ariel Stoltz.

This week, over 60 Jewish middle school students from throughout the Chicago area will begin the CJHS Junior Tiger basketball feeder league. Run by our coaching staff and varsity basketball players, the league strives to improve the basketball skills of future CJHS student-athletes.
The men's varsity basketball team plays its IHSA regional tournament at Westminster Christian in Elgin this week where they plan to make it "eight in a row" and go all the way. The team plays Faith Lutheran of Crystal Lake at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, with the second and third rounds scheduled for 8:00 PM on Wednesday and 7:30 PM on Thursday respectively. Please come out and cheer your team on to victory!
Spring sports practices begin the week of March 1, but you must register online in order to participate. Women's soccer, women's badminton, men's volleyball, and men's tennis are offered. Please see Mr. Cohen, Athletic Director, if you have any questions. |

Alumni Trivia
The Class of 2008's Tony-award-worthy Purim spiel skewered teachers and students alike in a rip-roaring musical comedy. Highlights included the well-loved school truant singing, "There's No Business Like Ditching Business" and the two loudest arch-rivals in the school proving that anything Shai can do, Richard can do better. (Except--according to their song--inspiring the other second-semester seniors to devote themselves to tefillah and Israel advocacy, which no one can do. Except Mr. Griffith, who can inspire anyone to do just about anything.)
Scriptwriter Richard Kahn ('08), who produced the show and provided the piano accompaniment, is now a freshman at Yale, having completed a year at Yeshivat Ma'alei Gilboa in Israel. One of these days, he promises himself, he will decide on a major; the current front-runners are math, chemistry, philosophy, economics, and religion. In the meantime, he is enjoying himself playing in a klezmer band and coaching a New Haven public school math team.
Co-conspirator Shai Kamin ('08) is in his sophomore year at Yale, where he is studying biomedical engineering and Israel chair at his local Hillel. He also edits the Yale Israel Journal, Shibolleth student magazine, and holds several other Israel-related advocacy positions on campus. "Pretty much everything I do is Jewish in some way, which may be dangerous to my potential med school application," grins Shai, "But it's what I want to be doing." |
