Gelt Program

The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Pink Day for Sharsheret

In a powerful show of school unity, CJHS rallied around the cause last Wednesday to support Jewish women fighting breast cancer.  Along with 25 other Jewish day schools around the world--including our basketball rivals, the Torah Academy of Bergen County--Pink Day was a phenomenal statement of support for our mothers, our sisters, and our friends whom we all hope will beat this disease, with God's help and our love.  Our resplendent pink tigers raised almost $150 for Sharsheret, a Jewish patients' and survivors network.

CSIIn addition to supporting this tremendously important cause, Pink Day was--let's face it--just plain awesome!   Spanish teacher Claudia Linda asked proudly, "In what other school could a junior boy make an announcement in front of the entire building about breast cancer awareness, asking everyone to wear pink? And then have almost the whole school do as he asked?"

Yasher koach to junior Zach Spellman for spearheading the project.  Click here for more information about Sharsheret and here to read a TABC graduate's rallying call to pink-wearers everywhere.
Chai Lifeline Runners

KirkMost people will say to you that running one mile is good. Then they'll say that if you run two miles, it's even better. When you say you're going to run five miles, they'll turn to you and say that's great! However, when you turn to someone and say, "Hey, I'm running a half marathon,"--let alone a full one--s/he will say, "You're nuts!"

Team Lifeline"Well, maybe we are nuts!" grins senior Jeremy Hipps. returning triumphantly from the Team Lifelie marathon on January 31, 2010.  Jeremy and new team member Jake Levine, along with Jeremy's father, Mr. Kirk Hipps, represented our school at the 2010 ING Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon. The total event raised over one million dollars for Chai Lifeline. With the help of the CJHS community, our team was able to raise over $6,000 out of that one million. Thank you to all of our donors and sponsors!

For those keeping score, Jake placed 5/53 in his division with a 1:47:22 half-marathon finishing time, and Jeremy placed 21/102 in his division with a 1:48:01 half-marathon finishing time.  Run like the wind, Tigers!
Curriculum and Beyond: Next Monday!

Lady Tigers UNDEFEATED!

cjhs.image cjhs.image

It has been an exciting week for winter sports!  The Lady Tigers junior varsity basketball team became the first cjhs.imageundefeated team in CJHS history after beating Ida Crown Sunday afternoon in a thriller.  The team had a perfect 10-0 season and has a very exciting future. Congratulations, girls! The varsity Lady Tigers are not to be overlooked, as they finished with an impressive 13-10 regular season record against a very tough schedule. The varsity team soundly defeated Waldorf on Monday in the first round of the IHSA regional tournament but were knocked out for the season on Wednesday with a loss to tournament winner Elgin Academy.  The girls give a big "thank you" to Coach Davis and Coach Hambach for all of their help and support this season.

cjhs.imagecjhs.imageFreshmen Alana Stoehr and Caroline Dreifuss both advanced two rounds in the tournament three-point contest, with Caroline hitting an incredible nine "threes."  Alana did well enough to advance to the sectionals in Aurora.  Go Alana!

cjhs.imageThe Men's Basketball teams also had a great week with JV and varsity wins over both Hinsdale Adventist and St. Gregory.  Lake Forest Academy and ASA games were not played due to the snow storm, but we hope to make them up up early next week. The teams face Northtown Academy on Thursday, and Yeshiva on Sunday (also Senior Day). The varsity team earned an impressive number two seed in the IHSA regional tournament and faces Faith Lutheran of Crystal Lake in its first game on Tuesday, February 23 at 6:00 PM at Westminster Christian in Elgin.  Come cheer your team on to victory.

cjhs.imageIn some very exciting news, CJHS has been accepted to the Chicago Prep League next year.  This athletic league has ten member schools, both boys and girls teams, and tournaments at the end of every season.  This well-respected league assures quality competition for our teams, and the tournaments give players a goal for the season.  We rejoice in our new membership to this quality multi-sport athletic league.

Polar bearsBelieve it or not, it's time to sign up for spring sports.  This spring, CJHS offersmen's tennis, men's volleyball, women's soccer, and women's badminton.  All begin the first week of March.  To register, go to the CJHS website and click on "athletics registration."  See Mr. Cohen if you have questions.

The middle school basketball feeder league is filling up quickly, so don't delay.  There are separate leagues for Feeder Leagueboys and girls, eight-game seasons, and instructional
practices.  Don't miss this great opportunity to improve your game in a fun, Jewish, supportive atmosphere with all of your friends.  To register, go to our Athletics Registration site.

As always, we wish to thank Tiger parent Laurie Ferri for her unparalled photo coverage of the Tiger, Lady Tigers, Tiger Sharks, and Ten-Pin Tigers winter seasons. Email Mrs. Ferri for a complete selection of winter athletics photos; for all your photography needs, visit her website. For team schedules, scores, stats, photos, and more, visit the CJHS athletics website at www.highschoolsports.net.

Tiger Sharks Devour

cjhs.imageThe Tigers ended the season by creating some real excitement at Lake Forest Academy on Thursday afternoon as they swam faster than at any other meet. CJ's 11swimmers set 26 personal best times, including EIGHT school records, and they pushed the talented Lake Forest team to the limit. The Tigers won the 200 Free Relay to tie the team score after 8 events. They did so with a record setting 200 freestyle relay. Senior Jeremy Hipps, who earlier won the 200 Free, led off the relay in a new school record for this 50 free leg with a very swift 28.6. Rena Forester, Nic Levy, and Jake Levine all provided personal best times to win the event, outpacing the previous school record by more than five seconds! The cjhs.imageTigers also established new school records in seven other events. Sarah Scheinman led the way with four new records, in the 200 Individual Medley (2:51.99), 100 Butterfly (1:19.8), 100 Backstroke (1:24.8), and in her leg of the Medley Relay, the 50 Butterfly (:33.4). Sarah was joined by Jeremy Hipps (100 Free, 1:06.9)and Rena Forester (100 Breaststroke, 1:33.89) in setting new school records.

CJHS Welcomes BJBE

BJBE gift

A new beginning
 A time for change
A lush path bursting with opportunity
A new spring bud not yet in bloom
A home for our people
We welcome you with open arms...
To educate, to nurture, to inspire

Bereshit -- we stood apart
Achshav -- we stand together

"Bereshit" is the title of the beautiful batik tablecloth that CJHS gave as a welcoming gift to our new neighbors at Congregation B'nai BatikJehoshua Beth Elohim.  Art teacher Mrs. Marla Snyder and junior Kailee Shraiberg created the piece over winter break. Kailee's younger sister, Eden, was a big help, too!  Thanks also to juniors Aliza Small and Jordy Shapiro for composing the dedication inscription above.
Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur

Rock n RaiseThe CJHS STAND chapter is participating in Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur, a month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for Darfuri refugee children.  This February, more than 50 schools across Chicago will combine their passions for music and philanthropy to raise $50,000, the amount required to fund an entire school in a Darfuri refugee camp for one year.  Our CJHS STAND chapter aims to raise $1,000 for the Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur campaign.
To make an online donation, visit www.rocknraise.org, and select the CJHS page. You can also make checks out to "Enough Project," and drop them off at the front office.

In addition to fundraising, Rock N' Raise is hosting a benefit concert at the Metro downtown on Sunday, Feburary 14 at 4:00 pm.  Buy tickets here or contact Jordy ShapiroNoa Fleischhacker, or Noah Weinberg for more information.
The Roaring 20's

The Not-So-Great Gatsby

The Roarin' 20's came to life in Dr. Miller's junior English class. While reading Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, the students have been studying the culture of the time period. What better way to celebrate than with a Gatsby-esque party! The students prepared invitations, accessories, food, and music for the party. Although plans to learn the Charleston had to be re-scheduled, everyone had a super time mingling with the rich and famous. The scene was definitely "...something significant, elemental, and profound."
Here Comes Adarama!

On February 17, The Youth Philanthropy Initiative will kickoff ADARAMA!  Taking quite seriously the mitzvah of matanot la-evyonim (gifts to the needy), our annual Adar fundraiser reflects the Jewish values of tikkun olam and bikur cholim, ideals that CJHS holds to be pillars in one's completion of mitzvot.

Alex's Lemonade StandThe 2010 "Lemon-Aid" campaign will benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand.  This grassroots project was started in 2000 by Alexandra "Alex" Scott, a four-year-old cancer patient.  Alex opened a lemonade stand to finance doctors seeking a cure for pediatric cancer.  Her business was soon being patronized by donors all over the nation and is still raising funds (though no longer distributing real lemonade) years after Alex's passing.  Many individuals are working to fulfill Alex's last wishes and we hope that we can rise to the challenge and help her fight pediatric cancer.

cjhs.imageLemon-Aid kicks off this Wednesday after school with a band concert and dance-off between our reigning champions, Jessica Rubens and Victoria Aron!  Pay your money, get down and jam, and see who will drop first!  Try your hand (or your mouth) at the lemon pie-eating contest!  Later Lemon-Aid activities will include lemon candy guessing games, card writing to patients at Children's Memorial Hospital, an online auction, food sales, inter-grade coin challenge, and mishloach manot packing.  Stay tuned for the latest events as the month of Adar unfolds!

Model U.N. Movie Night

The Tiger Times

Tiger Times
The CJHS newspaper has come out with its latest edition!  Visit our website at cjhstimes.webs.com.  Read the interview with one of the school's new teachers or explore the deep effect the Senior Israel Experience had on senior Jeremy Hipps.  In sports news, see if sophomore Max Geifman's football predictions were right, the importance of gym class, and the various benches encountered by the basketball team.

Many thanks to all the contributors and those who helped to publish the newspaper.
