Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur
As part of the Chicago-wide student movement to help the people of Darfur, our CJHS STAND chapter is participating in Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur, a month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for Darfuri refugee children. This February, more than 50 schools across Chicago will combine their passions for music and philanthropy to raise $50,000, the amount required to fund an entire school in a Darfuri refugee camp for one year. With the support of the Chicago community, we are confident that we will be able to achieve our fundraising goal.
Since 2003, nearly 3 million people have been displaced by the ongoing crisis in Darfur. Approximately 250,000 Darfuris have fled to refugee camps in neighboring Chad. Tragically, 60 percent of these refugees are children. A shortage of qualified teachers, poorly built school buildings, and a lack of supplies make it difficult to provide these children with quality education. In order to empower these students to become leaders of their communities and create a lasting peace in Darfur, we're raising funds to support Ali Dinar A School in Djabal refugee camp.
Our CJHS STAND chapter aims to raise $1,000 for the Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur campaign. Please consider making a contribution to this important cause. Your donation of $50, $25, or even $10 goes a long way!
To make an online donation, visit www.rocknraise.org. On the home page, click "Donate." You will be taken to a page on which all of the student groups involved are listed. Please select the CJHS page. From there, click the donate button and safely enter your credit card information to make a contribution. If you would like to donate with cash or checks, make your check out to "Enough Project," and drop them off at the front office, or give them to project co-chairs Jordy Shapiro, Noa Fleischacker, or Noah Weinberg.
Wear Your Support
As a part of our fundraising effort, we are selling tan and green "Save Darfur" t-shirts for $10 each. Order forms have been dropped off in student mailboxes; you may contact any of the students above for details.
Benefit Concert
In addition to fundraising, Rock N' Raise is hosting a benefit concert at the Metro downtown on Sunday, Feburary 14 at 4:00 pm. Tickets are $10 and a VIP table (for 4 people) costs $100. Buy tickets here or contact one of the above students to buy tickets to this exciting event.
Thanks so much for supporting our efforts! If you have any questions, please email one of us at jdshapkid@aol.com, noadaphne@yahoo.com, or noahwein@gmail.com.

Recycling Drive
Last week the Environmental Club kicked off a school-wide recycling contest. Groups of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors were challenged to fill their recycling bins each lunch period while making sure all trash went into garbage cans. At the end of the second week, points will be tallied, and the winning class will receive a fully supplied food locker for the week. This marks the beginnings of the Environmental Club's efforts to create a school climate that is fully aware of daily effects on the environment. Throughout the year, the club plans to have other programs and activities to further raise awareness and participation. |

Hey, All You Big Bad Tigers!
Winter sports are winding up, and CJHS has some of the best teams in its history!
The Lady Tigers junior varsity basketball team is undefeated after beating Ida Crown last weekend in a thriller. This team can be the first CJHS team to go undefeated all season if they best Ida Crown in their last game. The varsity Lady Tigers are not to be outdone as this team also has a winning season.
The team fared extremely well against Ida Crown on Sunday and faces Hinsdale Adventist Thursday night at home. Thursday night was also Senior Night, where Jessica Rosenberg, Aviva Schwartz, and Aliza Shapiro were recognized for their four years on the team. Come cheer on your Lady Tigers when they play in the IHSA tournament this week!
The men's basketball junior varsity has also had its best season ever. In front of a Saturday night capacity home crowd, the team lost in overtime against Ida Crown. The rest of the week brought better luck as the JV bested Westminster Christian in the school's college-sized gymnasium, defeated an athletic Noble Street team on Wednesday, and faced Hinsdale Adventist on Thursday. With its hardest schedule ever, the varsity team still has an impressive 7-6 regular season record. After losing close ones to Ida Crown on Saturday night and Westminster Christian on Tuesday, the varsity boys defeated a lightning fast Noble Street team on Wednesday 55-45. The team was led by sophomore sensation Sam Botbol, who had 14 points. The team plays Hinsdale Adventist on Thursday, and St. Gregory, Lake Forest, and ASA next week. Thanks goes to all those who attended Saturday night's game against Ida Crown who helped to raise $600 for the Haiti hurricane relief effort. The team also wishes to thank the CJHS Tiger Club for sponsoring the pizza party following the games Saturday night.

The Bowling Team finished another great season with a bang. The team bowled against teachers and parents on January 28 and had a team banquet at Mizrahi Grill on Tuesday to celebrate the season. A highlight this season was participating in the Gordon Tech Invitational over winter break, and the bowlers look forward to this tournament again next year. The team wishes to thank Coach Auslander and Coach Drazin for all of their time and effort.

After weeks of preparation, the Tiger Shark swim team gets to test their skills in two meets this week. On Tuesday, the team travels to Hyde Park to swim against the University School and the Latin School, and on Thursday, the team returns to Lake Forest Academy for a dual meet. Coach Cohn and Coach Weiss have the swimmers expertly prepared for the meets and promise that there will be many new team records set.
Believe it or not, it's time to sign up for spring sports. This spring, CJHS offers the following: men's tennis, men's volleyball, women's soccer, and women's badminton. All begin the first week of March. To register, go to the CJHS website and click on "athletics registration" on the left side. Please see Mr. Cohen, athletic director, if you have questions.
For team schedules, scores, stats, photos, and more, visit the CJHS athletics website at www.highschoolsports.net. |
