The program is comprised of three strands: · Issues of Concern to Parents · The CJHS Book Group · Torah Lishma (Learning for its own sake) Please find the details about programs at www.cjhs.org/pdf/ parenteducation. Click here for more information on December's Book Group! We'll be reading Khirbet Khizeh and discussing it on 12/7.
Gelt Program
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Junior Class Lobbies in Washington
In the classroom, students learn by listening. Rare is the opportunity when the abstractions of the classroom can be witnessed and lived first-hand. But precisely such a gem was given to the junior class on its Panim experience. Arriving in the nation's capital and eager to briefly escape the routine of school life, the juniors underwent a truly transformative journey. They learned about the plight of the homeless by distributing warm clothes in a public park, meeting and interacting with the people they were helping. They listened to speakers about the value of community service and then did their part in ameliorating the conditions of the poor, hungry, and underprivileged. They engaged in an advocacy simulation and visited organizations committed to changing society one small step at a time.
Students researched some of the foremost political, social, and economic issues facing the nation and brought their concerns directly to the highest levels of power. Other highlights included packing supplies at food pantries, cleaning up an urban park, and interacting with developmentally challenged young adults. CJHS students also visited advocacy groups such as The Natural Resources Defense Council, Congressional Hunger Center, and Feeding America.
These meaningful experiences were accompanied by a variety of enjoyable and powerful moments: visiting the museums of the Smithsonian, flying kites on the National Mall, touring the historic monuments, listening to a symphony performance, watching Senator McCain speak in the Senate, interacting with fellow students from New York and Colorado, navigating the complex metro system, and walking the hallowed pathways of history. The visits and workshops culminated in students lobbying at the offices of Senators Durbin and Burris, and Representatives Schakowsky and Kirk. The trip as a whole will definitely become a first-rate memory of the CJHS experience. The juniors will always treasure this remarkable time, not only for the experiences it provided them but also for the unforgettable opportunity to bring education to life. |

CSI Deerfield
Last Thursday, Mrs. Murphy's anatomy class tried their hands at being forensic scientists. Students used artificial blood to mimic drip and spatter patterns that might be found at a real crime scene. With varying degrees of enthusiasm and horrified interest, students flicked the bristles of a toothbrush covered in simulated blood at a papered whiteboard in order to replicate high velocity spatter. Plastic knives were used as simulated weapons to mimic "cast off." Students measured the height of blood drops dripped onto note cards, then measured the diameters of the drops from each height and compared them across groups. They found that the drop size is relatively consistent across groups for each height, which is how CSIs can determine their origin. |

Tigerfest
Tigerfest is here! Watch out for an army of spirited Tigers in their band shirts, tie-dyes, ties, and pajamas, as CJHS winter sports prepare to take on the world. We are counting down to the winter pep rally, and spirit is running high!
Winter Sports Our season has kicked off, and the Tigers are taking on the world. Congratulations to the women's JV basketball team for their victory against Francis Parker last Thursday, and to the women's varsity team, whose hard-fought game was lost by six points. More cheers are due to our valiant Tiger Shark swimmers who made a huge splash at their first meet at Lake Forest Academy last week. Our bowling team is also due a shout-out for their intense clinic last week. Good luck to our men's JV and varsity basketball teams as they head off to take on Cristo Rey this evening. Go Tigers!
Homecoming
Students danced the night away at "Candyland," this year's homecoming dance. Thanks to all the students and staff who worked hard to make Homecoming 2009 a success! |

Happy Thanksgiving
This year, may we be truly thankful for the blessings in our lives. May we treasure our experiences above our possessions and be more thankful for who is around our table than for what is on it. Candlelighting this Friday will be at 4:04 p.m. Let's go learn a lot this week!
E-News will be on hiatus next week for the Thanksgiving holiday. We look forward to sharing news of Tiger victories and student achievement with you in our December 7 edition. | |
