Parent Education
The Parent Organization is very excited about our program for the upcoming year. The program is comprised of three strands:
· Issues of Concern to Parents
· The CJHS Book Group
· Torah Lishma (Learning for its own sake)

Please find the details about programs at www.cjhs.org/pdf/

.

Click here for more information on December's Book Group!  We'll be reading Khirbet Khizeh and discussing it on 12/7.

Gelt Program
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Need stationery?  Holiday cards?  Family tributes?  Order cards from the P.O.!  Click here for more information.

CJHS Salutes Our Veterans

Lt. Daniel Fisher, formerly of the U.S. Navy, spoke to our students in honor of Veterans Day.   Fisher grew up in a Washington DC suburb, attended MIT on a Naval ROTC Scholarship, and served in the navy for six years before earning an MBA from Kellogg.  He currently resides in Highland Park with his wife and sons, where he is a member of Moriah Congregation and proud son-in-law to our own science department chair.  He is pictured above in a joyous reunion with his wife Rachel, née Levinson.

Mr. Fisher spoke on the importance of defending our country as well as defending our right to worship freely as Jews. He shared his experiences both as a naval officer as well as a Jew in the armed forces.  Mr. Fisher's presentation was well received and most impressive.
Straddling Heaven and Earth
Photography
The opening reception for the photography class's exhibit "Straddling Heaven and Earth," was enjoyed by Gidwitz residents, and our students, parents and teachers.  The exhibit will be hanging in the gallery at Gidwitz until January 6, 2010.

Mrs. Snyder would like to thank Arlene Minzer and

Lost and Found, Gemara-Style

cjhs.imageBe careful with what you leave lying around in the hallway!  Mrs. Susnow's 10th grade Intro to Talmud class has been learning about what to do when you find a lost object.  The Mishnah in Masekhet Bava Metziah teaches us that if one finds a lost object and there are no distinguishable or identifiable marks, the finder can legally keep the object!  Only when the object can be easily identified and the owner would most likely be looking for it do we have the obligation to try and find that owner.  To see this in more realistic terms, Sarah Chiren, Madi Cogan, Steve Edelman, Josh Ferri, Tziporah Ladin-Gross, Jake Levine, Nic Levy, Ilana Lieberman, Josh Perry and Gabby Shusterman took to the hallways to find and photograph "lost" objects of their fellow schoolmates and determine, according to the Mishnah, what they should do with that item.  From bags to water bottles, from key chains to siddurim, many objects were "found" and many of those objects technically could have been kept by the Talmud class!

Lesson to be learned: put your name on your stuff and don't leave things lying around the hallways!  Thank you, Intro to Talmud for that practical Talmud tip.

Former Faculty in the News

cjhs.imageCJHS sends its warmest regards to former Rabbi in Residence Robyn Fryer Bodzin, now a pulpit rabbi at the Israel Center for Conservative Judaism in Queens, NY.  Rabbi Fryer Bodzin was featured prominently in the New York Jewish Week magazine, headlining an article describing the revitalization of Conservative Jewish congregations in Queens.  Read all about her efforts here.  A highlight of moving to New York, Rabbi Fryer Bodzin says, has been the opportunity to see many of her former CJHS students!

Sports Omission

The winter is coming, and our winter athletes are training hard!  We congratulate our swimmers on their first meet of the season at Lake Forest Academy last Thursday.  Go Tiger Sharks!

E-News would also like to recognize cross-country runner Chaya Moskovits, whose name was mistakenly omitted from the list of runners at the end of the season.
Science Opportunities

The Summer Science Program allows gifted students to complete a challenging, hands-on research project in celestial mechanics. By day, students learn college-level astronomy, physics, calculus, and programming. By night, working in teams of three, they take a series of telescopic observations of a near-earth asteroid, and write software to convert those observations into a prediction of the asteroid's orbit around the sun. Stimulating guest speakers and field trips round out the curriculum.

This year's sophomores can now apply for the summer of 2010.  Click here for more information.  Applications are due by March 15.

Exciting News From Model U.N.
After completing our first year at the international New York Model United  Nations Conference last year, the excellence of our work there was recognized by the governing body of the conference when last week our 20 student delegates were assigned to represent the Czech Republic on a majority of General Assembly, EcoSoc Committees. Additionally, our delegates were awarded most coveted and prestigious positions on five highly specialized committees, on which we will represent Senegal, Spain and the Russian Federation. Newer schools are almost never given spots on these specialized committees and the fact that we were assigned to five of them speaks volumes about how well regarded CJHS has become at the conference. Dr. Gary Auslander and Mrs. Myra Loris could not be prouder of our team and their ongoing pursuit of excellence in the attempt to wrestle with the most complex of the world's problems. GO MUN!
