The program is comprised of three strands: · Issues of Concern to Parents · The CJHS Book Group · Torah Lishma (Learning for its own sake) Please find the details about programs at www.cjhs.org/pdf/ parenteducation. Click here for more information on December's Book Group! We'll be reading Khirbet Khizeh and discussing it on 12/7.
Gelt ProgramThe P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Volleyball Team Fights Breast Cancer
Covered from head to toe in pink, the womens' volleyball team took on the faculty in a highly anticipated match to raise money for breast cancer research. "Volley for the Cure" culminates a week of breast cancer awareness and education on the part of our student athletes.
Asissted by staff and parent volunteers, a motley group of staff took on our inaugural volleyball team of Sabrina Bergman, Madi Cogan, Rebecca Cohn, Halyse Cole, Caroline Dreifuss, Danielle Geraty, Zoe Goldhirsh, Jessie Lankford, Jaclyn Meyers, Julia Perelman, Annie Schrayer, Lindsey Taussig, and Lisa Wiznitzer. After three years of unremitting defeat by the student body, the teachers finally managed to redeem themselves with some stunning spikes, saves, and spills by Rabbi Barkan, Mr. Marchenko, Rabbi Goldberg, Mr. Taylor, Rabbi Ben-Avraham, and Mr. Kosarev. Even Mr. Scher in his 10 minutes of play managed to punch the ball over the net!
"This ball was coming at me, so I hit it over the net," kvelled our academic dean, whose boundless enthusiasm about school spirit is matched only by his self-advertised ignorance about sports. "And then people started cheering. That was right, wasn't it?"
Indeed, staff spirit was running so high in the first quarter that the students looked in danger of complete slaughter--a CJHS first! Coach Chris Hambach jumped into the game to even the score. However, the girls took their own back in the second quarter, whenthey scored double digits over the other side.
The game was not without its lighter moments. Pink-cladfans on the sidelines couldn't help but smile at the deferential courtesy with which a whole knot of girls politely watched the ball descend into their midst, lest they elbowsomeone else in their haste to volley it back. And onlythe teachers could take credit for the spectacular "punch the ball over Yaba's head just as he's about to serve it back" maneuver. Nevertheless, both sides were cheered on by an army of supporters, siblings, and children, yelling for their favorite teachers or best friends and hoping to make a difference in the lives of future women,
Although the staff won the game, the true victory belongs to the womens' team. After educating students about the disease through posters around the school, the team raised a whopping $268 through selling game and raffle tickets.Throughout the inaugural season, the volleyball teamendured a remarkable transformation as a team, both physically and emotionally, and created a tradition that will last for years. |

Largest Open House in CJHS History
Over forty families showed up on the first Sunday of November to learn more about CJHS. Senior Jamie Levin, junior Jordy Shapiro, and CJHS parent and board member Alan Frankel introduced our school with personal reflections, after which questions were answered by administrators, department chairs and those involved with student services. Prospective families toured the school independently or with one of our student ambassadors. Senior Rena Forester was excited to lead a tour for a family who had traveled from Algonquin, IL.
- 25 families were from Schechter
- 5 from other local Jewish day schools including Akiba Schechter, Anshe Emet and Hillel Torah
- 9 from various public middle schools
- 2 high school students considering transferring
- 41 families total came to see the fun
We are very appreciative and proud of all our student ambassadors who helped articulate the curriculum and mission of our school, both in the classrooms and in the hallways. This interaction with our students is the highlight of the program for many of our guests.Thank you also to Recruitment Committee members--Jeannie Aschkenasy, Margaret Cohn, Cortney Stark Cope, Sara Coven, Jennifer Flink, Stacey Gordon, Nina Harris, Judy Levin, Karen Peaceman, and Melissa Spellman--for assisting at the Open House.
Applications are being accepted. Save $500 off your student's first year tuition by submitting an application by the December 15 Early Decision Deadline. Families may also register to take the Explore entrance exam once an application has been submitted. Testing dates are Sunday, December 13 and Sunday, January 10. For more information, contact Rachel Spiro, Director of Admissions, rspiro@cjhs.org or 847.324.3706.

Dia De Los Muertos
On Monday November 2, in Sra. Linda's Spanish III class, the students celebrated El día de los muertos, the day of the dead. Each student came to class as a deceased person from a Spanish-speaking country and gave an oral presentation designed to give enough information to guess the person's identity. Refreshments were the responsibility of the profesora. Some of those who returned to visit the class included Roberto Clemente, Federico García Lorca, Che Guevara, César Chávez, Pancho Villa, Eva Perón and Rambam. Olé a todos los estudiantes. |
Israeli Cultural Excursion
On November 3, the entire sophomore class enjoyed a unique opportunity to learn about Israeli culture through cinema and music with teens from Highland Park and Deerfield high schools. The students watched The Name My Mother Gave Me, an uplifting and moving documentary, which follows a group of Ethiopian and Russian-born Israeli adolescents whose pre-Army leadership-training program culminates in a trip to Ethiopia. In addition to watching the movie, the director Eli Tal-El was on hand to answer questions and talk about the film. After the movie, the students gathered at Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah in Wilmette for an Israeli-style lunch and an educational program about Yitzhak Rabin. The program concluded with a performance by three Israeli singers who have performed on Israel's version of "American Idol." The entire day was sponsored by Shorashim, which supports CJHS in bringing Israel closer to our students and creating unforgettable experiences on a yearly basis. A special thank you to Mrs. Levinson and Mrs. Susnow for chaperoning the trip and to Gvt. Moskovich for making it happen. |

QuarkNet: It's Rocket Science
CJHS's physics research team welcomes back Dr. Joshua Burton, our guest physicist. Dr. Burton treated our intrepid team members on Friday October 30 to a lesson on launch physics and rocket fuel. Why is it that any interplanetary launch requires at least three stages to accomplish and ends up dumping most of its payload before it reaches its goal? Ask Louis Shekhtman, Jordy Shapiro, Leo Spornstarr, Benji Fleischacker, Iszy Licht, Jonah Harris, or Naomi Michael! |

Hebrew Conference
On October 18 and 19, CJHS hosted a regional seminar for schools that incorporate the NETA Hebrew program. We opened our school to 31 Hebrew teachers from 7 schools--from neighboring Chicago schools as well as from Milwaukee and Cleveland--to gather, to learn, and to interact with professional colleagues. Our own Hebrew teachers, Gvt. Shubin, Gvt. Cohen, Gvt. Wasserman and Gvt. Moskovich, felt that these learning opportunities were valuable and enriching, and they are anxious to incorporate some of the ideas in their own classes. |
