P.O. Corner
Parent Education The Parent Organization is very excited about our program for the upcoming year. The program is comprised of three strands: · Issues of Concern to Parents · The CJHS Book Group · Torah Lishma (Learning for its own sake) Please find the details about programs at www.cjhs.org/pdf/ parenteducation . To order Khirbet Khizeh for the 12/7 Book Club, order online today through Amazon or BN.com.
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847. 710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Tigers Victorious!
As the weather turned cold, CJHS fall athletic teams woundup their seasons.
Our cross-country team finished its season with a bang as both the women's and men's teams took first place in the open division at the Latin Invitational on October 8. Look for these impressive trophies in the gym wing's trophy case. This storied race in Chicago's Lincoln Park never fails to provide excitement, not the least of which was the cold and rainy race conditions. The team will miss its graduating seniors, many who joined the team in its inaugural year: Leah Cardona, Shoshana Coven, Daniel Eisenberg, Ari Eisenstadt, Jeremy Hipps, Aviva Schwartz, Rebecca Silverman, Sammy Simon, and Jacquie Zaluda.
While the rainy weather made the cross-country team's final meet more interesting, it led to the cancellation of the women's tennis team's October 6 game at Elgin Academy. The team had excellent weather karma up until the last two matches, and had an excellent season to boot. We wish a sad goodbye to seniors Jamie Levin and Aliza Shapiro.
Led by senior Leo Spornstarr's trifecta offensive performance, the men's soccer team won its first-round IHSA regional game 4-0 on Monday against Christian Liberty. The next night, the team traveled a great distance to battle top-seeded Harvard High School. Despite the team's courageous defensive play, the Tigers lost 6-0. For a first-year program, all team members should be proud of all they accomplished this season. We wish a warm farewell to seniors Max Abecassis, Eli Mogul, David Silver, Leo Spornstarr, and Mark Weiss.
The women's volleyball team had an exciting end to its regular season play with a heartbreaking tie-breaker loss to Perspectives on Monday. Team members redeemed themselves on Wednesday with a decisive win at Chicago's Lycee Francais. The team plays Chicago's Waldorf School on October 29 in the first round of the IHSA state tournament. Look for details on the team's upcoming "Volley for the Cure" scrimmage to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.
The men's golf team headed to Oakbrook Country Club last Tuesday to compete for the first time in the IHSA state golf 1A tournament. While the team more than held its own in team competition, senior Brett Riederman qualified to move on to the subsequent sectional round. Competing against some of the state's best golfers on Monday in Sandwich, Illinois, Brett shot an amazing 80. Sadly, this was just one point shy of the cut-off to advance to the next round. The team will miss seniors Jacob Rabinowitz and Brett Riederman. As Coach Tinberg says, "Hit 'em long and straight." |

Grandparents and Special Friends Dive Into Chemistry

The CJHS Grandparents and Special Friends Organization welcomed more than four dozen people at a Meet and Greet on Thursday night. After welcomes by Mr. Frank, Head of School, and Stuart and Marianne Taussig, chairs of the organization, the group learned about many of the facets of a CJHS experience. The grandparents and special friends listened with rapt attention as senior Peri Axelrod described the impact of transferring into CJHS for her junior year and how the school has tremendously enhanced her Jewish identity. Many thanks to Judi Dworkin and Michelle Howden of the Parent Organization, who shared information about upcoming programs and volunteer opportunities at CJHS.
Grandparents were delighted to learn about the Judaic Studies curriculum from Rabbi Elliot Goldberg, Director of Religious Life. The highlight of the evening, however, took place when everyone went upstairs in the Resnick Science Lab for an overview of the science department with Mrs. Ann Levinson, Department Chair, and the group completed a chemistry experiment under Mrs. Levinson's direction. The evening ended with dessert and tours of our school.
We invite all grandparents and special friends to join the organization and mark your calendars for Grandparents and Special Friends Day on Thursday, May 27, 2010, when you will have lunch and go to class with your students.

Beetle Run
It was human vs. insect in Ms. Robyn Murphy's anatomy class this week, as students competed with Bess beetles to see who could pull the most weight. Dimitri the Wonder Beetle, weighing in at just under 2 grams, pulled 45 times his own weight in pennies! Our student champion, Sammy "The Beetle" Simon, could pull only 8 times his own body weight. Score one for the bugs!

CJHS Senior Israel Experience Receives Recognition
This past August, Dr. Ezra Kopelowitz, Dr. Minna Wolf, and Stephen Markowitz of Research Success Technologies Inc, published a working paper entitled, "High School Israel Experience Programs: A Policy-Oriented Analysis of the Field." The study, sponsored by the Jewish Agency for Israel, found that successful Israel experiences understand that "expected benefits from the Israel trip expand beyond the participant to include the sending organization and community" (p. 35). The paper goes on to say that "only a minority of sending organizations are developing sophisticated understandings of the benefits of the Israel trip and structuring their trips accordingly. The most sophisticated resemble the educational program pursued by the Chicagoland High School... Most sending organizations do not reach Chicagoland's level of sophistication, impeding the development of broader support for the trips" (35).
Further, the study highlights CJHS's educational philosophy which "focuses on teaching critical thinking and showing participants how to reach sophisticated conclusions through studying contemporary issues. The goal is to grapple with Israel as a complex and intricate society. A significant amount of time is spent looking at grey areas in Israel (security, politics, social problems, poverty, etc). The educators try and be as dogma-free as possible, allowing participants to come to their own conclusions" (34).
