CJHS Launches New Beit Midrash Program

PairThis past Wednesday, CJHS held its first school-wide, mixed-grade Bet Midrash. Modeled on the classic Jewish house of study, student-leaders and faculty facilitators from Judaic studies, English, Spanish, history, and science led students in a text-study and discussion on some Rabbinic views on the nature of humanity and its creation. The nearly 3-year long debate between Hillel and Shammai over whether or not humans should have been created is still continuing in the halls of CJHS!

In the future, this program will include texts outside Jewish tradition to foster multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural engagement with great ideas and literature beyond the academic program. To mark special occasions on the Jewish and general calendar students and teachers will learn simply for the love of learning, or as we say, torah lishma

Sharon Richter and Laura Leuko, two volunteers from the Wonder Years Centre of Excellence, delivered a presentation about their experiences working in a village in the Gambia, the smallest country in Africa. The Wonder Years Centre of Excellence works to educate and aid the people of the Gambia to live sustainable lives. The event was a great opportunity to learn about the culture and lifestyle in The Gambia. For further information about the Uganda Pen Pal Club please contact Ariel Stoltz or Reby Silverman
Tennis Tigers Sweep Competition

cjhs.image

With a backdrop of nearly perfect weather and not a single athletic contest cancellation, CJHS fall sports teams continued their winning ways this past week.

The women's tennis team traveled to Chicago's Sauganash Park on Tuesday to take on Northtown Academy.  With Alison Dreifuss and Jamie Levin playing singles and doubles teams of Lauren Steinberg and Rachel Aaronson, Brianna Wolin and Leah cjhs.imageKarchmer, and Aliza Shapiro and Sissa Abecassis, CJHS swept Northtown Academy 5-0.  Let's wish the team equal success when they travel to Skokie next Wednesday to take on Niles West.

Our cross-country team returned to Lake Forest Academy to run the challenging, bucolic course for the second time this season.  Due to all of the training the team has done, most team members saw improvement in their times.  For a bit of a country mouse/city mouse contrast, the team goes back to Chicago on Tuesday to compete in the final leg of the Mather Invite. Elli CohnCongratulations to sophomore Benjy Forester, who has already made phenomenal time in the first leg of the race two weeks ago.

Caution: CJHS alumni crossing!  Pictured here is Elli Cohn, class of '08, who helped sprint CJHS to victory in last year's Latin Invitational.  Elli now runs cross country at Muhlenberg College.

Despite several key players being sidelined to injury, the men's soccer team tied Niles West on Monday and lost a close one to Lake Forest Academy on Tuesday.  Freshman goalie sensation Michael Jacobson had seven saves on goal in this game.  The team played Lycee Francais on Thursday, September 24, St. Martin de Porres today, and Northtown Academy next Thursday, all at home.

Our other new team, women's volleyball, had a very busy week with games against Chicago Hope Academy, St. Gregory, and North Shore Country Day.  Congratulations to the junior varsity squad for its impressive victory on Tuesday over St. Gregory.  The team traveled to North Shore Country Day on Thursday, and plays St. Martin de Porre on Tuesday and Hinsdale Adventist on Thursday-both at home.

The men's golf team took advantage of the nice weather Tuesday and hosted North Shore Country Day at Green Acres Country Club.  Team members are working diligently to lower their scores as they prepare for the upcoming state tournament.  In the last scheduled dual meet of the season, CJHS hosts Elgin Academy on Tuesday.

Interested in playing on the men's basketball team?  Come show your stuff  on Wednesday, September 30 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in "shoot-arounds" with CJHS coaches.  Aspiring team members are asked to attend at least two of the three sessions as preparation for the upcoming season.
Sleep-In at the Holocaust Museum

cjhs.image The STAND Sleep-In '09 will be held at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center on October 17 and 18 from 8:45 P.M. to 8:00 A.M. The goal of this program is to educate teenaged students about conflicts around the world in recent history. The event will feature speakers, each representing a different genocide. Time for questions is allotted. There will be a tour of the museum and programming relating to the understanding of the genocide. We will spend time advocating to Congressmen, Representatives, and other political figures through email, letters, phone calls, etc., as well as defining more creative ways to impact the world. We will also have time during the Sleep-In to reflect on our experiences and the information we have learned. In all, the event should be an exciting night jam-packed with education, advocacy, and reflection.

STAND is a national network of student groups "standing up" against genocide in Darfur and elsewhere.  The CJHS chapter of STAND has been hosting annual sleepovers and other educational and activist events for several years.
National Punctuation Day

cjhs.imageThursday, September 24, was National Punctuation Day. Dr. Miller's classes celebrated by studying punctuation including: parentheses, brackets, quotation marks, apostrophes, question marks, periods, exclamation points, colons, semi-colons, hyphens and more. As part of the festivities, they watched the famous video of Victor Borge performing phonetic punctuation. In addition, they learned the value of properly-placed commas in sentences such as: 'Let's eat, mommy' or 'Let's eat mommy!'
Elevator Physics

cjhs.imageSeem a little crowded in the elevator this week?  Better make room for Mrs. Eliaser's entire physics class in there with you!  Students were measuring the power rating of the school's elevator as a lab exercise.  Students found the potential energy of a fully loaded elevator, then measured the time it takes the machine to lift its load to the next floor.  (Several lab groups also glumly report that dropping pencil cases down the main staircase is not necessarily the most accurate way to measure the height of each floor.)  Interestingly enough, the class found that our elevator expends about five thousand watts of power on a downward trip, but less than half of that when going upwards!  Students are developing theories as to why this is so.  Stay tuned for further results!
