Goodman Athletic Field and Athletic Wing Dedication
Hundreds of people gathered yesterday to dedicate the Larry Goodman Family Foundation Athletic Wing and Athletic Field at Chicagoland Jewish High School. Surrounded by an overwhelming sense of pride, school spirit, and an Olympic-style procession of our athletic teams, the community shared thanks and appreciation for Larry and Lillian Goodman and their generous gift to CJHS. The event included performances by our students, including a moving cantata written by former CJHS Board member Jane Pickus; the cantata wove together themes of spirit, strength, resilience, and sport with quotations from biblical sources and historical figures. The dedication of the Athletic Field concluded outside with guests filling the bleachers and cheering as the Goodmans cut the ribbon. The Honorable Orli Gil, Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, read a moving letter from the Prime Minister's Bureau congratulating the Goodmans on their contribution to CJHS. "This gift has certainly provided a tremendous boost to Jewish education at a time when such learning is becoming more and more vital to the well-being and the survival of the Jewish people." Mr. Goodman responded with gratitude to the individuals who convinced him to lend his support to an institution that strengthens Jewish life and Jewish community. "If you don't remember your history," Mr. Goodman told the students, "then history won't remember you. "
A special thank you to the following people who made this dedication possible:
- Our jazz ensemble and a cappella groups for their performances
- Sign-A-Rama for the beautiful banners and ArtQuest for the plants
-
Our stellar athletes, our visionary Athletic Director Tim Cohen, and the outstanding coaches
-
Jane Pickus, who composed the lovely cantata
-
Nina Harris, CJHS Board President, and the CJHS Board of Directors for their tireless work on behalf of the school
-
Rabbi Ruven Barkan for his moving speech
-
The Honorable Orli Gil, Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, for speaking about the importance of Jewish education
-
The parent volunteers who helped make this event run so smoothly
-
Parent Lauri Ferri for taking beautiful pictures and Dr. Gary Auslander for videotaping the ceremony
-
CJE SeniorLife for providing delicious refreshments
CJHS has 18 interscholastic teams that compete with a wide variety of schools, and two teams will travel to tournament-based Shabbatonim for Jewish day schools this year. While competing with Jewish high school students from across the country, our student-athletes will share the love of sport and form lasting friendships. Many of our teams have winning records while playing against much larger schools, and three CJHS graduates have played on college athletic teams.
Our athletic department has added new teams according to student initiative and interest; our state-of-of-the-art facilities include a regulation-size gymnasium, two athletic fields (including the Goodman Athletic Field), a fully-equipped fitness center, and spacious locker rooms.

Tigers Excel

Thanks to all of our student-athletes who came to school on Sunday for team photos and the dedication of the Goodman Athletic Field and Athletic Wing. It was truly a great day!
Our cross-country team competed extremely well last Tuesday among a very strong field at the Ron Campbell 2-Mile Invite at Niles West. Junior Aaron Cohn and senior Rebecca Silverman set CJHS course records. The team competes on Tuesday, September 15 at the always exciting Mather Invite in Chicago. The women's tennis team faced a loaded North Shore Country Day team last Tuesday but still managed to have some fun. The team expects to fare better at Lake Forest Academy on Tuesday and at Evanston Township High School on Wednesday.
The injury-plagued men's soccer team used a much-needed week off from games to recuperate and practice. In its busiest week yet, the team plays at Roycemore on Monday, hosts St. Martin de Porres on Tuesday, and travels to North Shore Country Day on Thursday.
Our other new team, women's volleyball, lost very close games to St. Martin de Porres and Northtown Academy last week, but continues to improve. The team travels to Roycemore on Monday, and hosts this same team on Wednesday for JV and varsity games. The men's golf team had an inter-squad scrimmage on Tuesday, September 8, and had a clinic with the Green Acres Country Club golf professional on Thursday. The team plays against Lake Forest Academy this Tuesday.
Interested in playing on the men's basketball team? Come show your stuff Thursday, September 17, Wednesday, September 23, and Wednesday, September 30 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in "shoot-arounds" with CJHS coaches. Aspiring team members are asked to attend at least two of the three sessions as preparation for the upcoming season.

Juniors Smash Bridge-Building Record!
This year's junior physics class blew away all previous records in the school's best-ever display of ingenuity and mechanical know-how. Every single pasta bridge in the class supported at least 20 times its own weight--a number which has in the past characterized the best bridge in a grade!
Virtually tying for fourth place, Paz Abergel and Sarah Scheinman's Pratt truss made from quintuple-reinforced linguini supported 50.2 times its own weight, while in the deck category, Natalie Roytman and Maddie Klein's double-decker original creation supported 50.3 times its own weight. Jake Rudolph and Mike Sarris' "Iron Panda" design checked in at 53.6 times its own weight, and LeeTal Gabel and Natalie Saltzman's triple-decker Howe supported 71.5 times its own weight, placing it among the most efficient bridges ever built by CJHS students.
Smashing the record set in 2006 by Aaron Gore (class of '07), Daniel Warshawsky and Adam Rudolph's sturdy Warren truss supported 94.4 times its own weight! The undisputed 2009 junior champions, however, are Sissa Abecassis and Jaime Borkan, whose pyramidal bridge supported a staggering 120.9 times its own weight! Both Sissa and Jaime's bridge and Daniel and Adam's bridge were so sturdy that they supported every single weight in the room before finally cracking. Jaime and Sissa, however, were able to support the same load with a lighter, more elegant structure. Sissa, Jaime, Adam and Daniel will represent CJHS next winter at IIT's Chicago regional bridge-building contest.
This year's senior champions, Lizzie Spicehandler, Max Abecassis, Davy Silver, Miranda Borkan, and Talia Stoehr congratulate the rising architects as they anxiously prepare for this winter's contest. "I'm glad to see that first place is being kept in the family," grinned Sissa's brother Max, whose brother Victor was a senior champion in 2008. "As for 120 efficiency, that's amazing. I'm proud of how well they did." |

CJHS Commemorates 9/11
The CJHS community thanks Benji Fleischacker, Brianna Wolin, Gabe Rubin, Reby Silverman, Miranda Borkan, Madi Cogan, and Josh Ferri for helping us commemorate September 11, 2001. Benji opened the remembrance with a cello performance, the prelude from Bach's first suite for unaccompanied cello. Drawing on the New York Times Portraits of Grief series, Brianna, Gabe, Reby and Miranda then honored the many innocent individuals who lost their lives. Madi and Josh closed the remembrance with a video of a Bruce Springsteen song, "You're Missing," a song written specifically about 9/11. Thanks go also to Rabbi Barkan for a touching reminder that CJHS had only just opened its doors when the attack occurred. Finally, thank you to Mr. Rose for his technical assistance and to Mrs. Hines for assisting our students in the planning of this remembrance.
