CJHS Welcomes 42 New Students
This Monday, CJHS welcomed back 154 beaming students. Among them were 37 freshmen--of which 40% come to us from a school other than Solomon Schechter--38 sophomores, including 3 transfer students, 40 juniors, including 2 transfer students, and 39 seniors. Our students come from 19 different communities around the Chicagoland area, and even one from Arizona! Forty-two different synagogues are represented in the student body this year.
One of the core values at CJHS is strengthening the community. We are ever so grateful to the warm and welcoming people who open their homes to our new and returning families, inviting them to Shabbat meals and other social programs.
Thank you to Lynn and Skip Schrayer and new freshman Annie for hosting a barbecue on Sunday for all incoming freshmen and their families at their home. Thank you to Lynn and Leo Wiznitzer and rising junior Lisa for hosting the annual Welcome Back Barbecue after the first day of school.

Goodman Athletic Field and Athletic Wing Dedication

Did you know that 3 out of 4 CJHS students participate in at least one of our athletic teams? CJHS is proud to announce the dedication of the Larry Goodman Family Foundation Athletic Field and Athletic Wing. This special event will take place at CJHS on Sunday, September 13 at 3:30 p.m. and is open to the community. The athletic field and athletic wing are a gift from Larry and Lillian Goodman, through the Larry Goodman Family Foundation.
The dedication will take place in the school gym (and outside, weather-permitting) and will highlight our own athletes and our commitment to sports as a component of our entire educational program; there will also be performances from the CJHS jazz band and choir, as well as a special appearance by Orli Gil, Israel's Consul General to the Midwest. Look for more information in the next couple weeks about student involvement; we will also need many parent volunteers for the dedication. For more information or to attend, please contact Bobbie Wolk at 847.324.3723 or email rwolk@cjhs.org. |

Fall Sports Begin
The fall sports season is underway at CJHS with a record five sports being offered. In addition to cross-country, women's tennis, and men's golf, men's soccer and women's volleyball teams have been added as a result of student requests. Over 80 students are participating in fall sports, which constitutes more than half of the student body. The men's soccer, women's tennis, and men's golf teams began interscholastic competition this week, with the cross-country and women's volleyball will commence next week. We wish everyone the best of luck.
There is still time to join a CJHS sports team this fall! Simply get a registration form from Mr. Cohen, and turn in to the front desk. Any questions may be directed to the team's coach or CJHS athletic director Tim Cohen, tcohen@cjhs.org. |

Students in the News

Three of our outstanding chemistry students competed and won honors in two prestigious chemistry competitions. Senior Daniel Eisenberg earned honors in the USNCO (United States National Chemistry Olympiad) competition. He was one of 1,000 top chemistry students in the entire United States who qualified to sit for this very competitive national exam. Daniel placed in the top 150.
Juniors Jordan Shapiro and Alex Krule sat for the Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society Scholarship Exam in chemistry in 2009. Jordan placed third winning a $2,500 scholarship, and Alex earned an honorable mention. Last year, Daniel Eisenberg placed second in this competition in 2008. This competition included students from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
Congratulations to these fine students and to their teacher, Mrs. Ann Levinson.

Alumni in the News
Zach Berkman, CJHS class of '04, is spearheading his flourishing music career as one of the eleven remaining contestants on P. Diddy's Starmaker! Catch Zach Sunday nights on MTV, or read his full artist bio here.
On a completely different note, Ron Gejman, CJHS class of '06, and his friend, Jacob Andreas, have created a synagogue locator for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the wandering Jew. Need to find a local Jewish community? The application uses your current location to find nearby congregations from a database of almost 5,000 shuls. Stuck away from home over Shabbos? The application allows you to search for shuls before you even get to your destination. You can call or email the shul to let them know you're coming, ask about Shomer Shabbat accommodations, or check what time services start.

Faculty in the News
Physics teacher Shira Eliaser presented at the American Association of Physics Teachers meeting in Ann Arbor, as part of a panel on particle physics in the high school curriculum. Her well-received multimedia presentation "Quantum Electrodynamics: Cartoon Style!" demonstrated one method for making high-level content accessible to younger students.
Rabbi Elliot Goldberg and Rabbi Ruven Barkan participated in a multi-denominational High Holy Day Health Care conference call with President Obama on Wednesday, August 19. The call was a joint effort of the Rabbinical Assembly, the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Union for Reform Judaism, and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association, coordinated by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism through which the rabbinic community could explore with the President the role American rabbis and congregations could play in the reform of our health care system.
Ann Levinson, Science Department Chair, attended the iBio, Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization, Workshop this summer at Roosevelt University in July. The focus was incorporating technology and relevant industry into the biology curriculum. |
Lulav & Etrog
Again this year, CJHS families will be able to order lulavim and etrogim through CJHS. Each set costs $50. Order forms are avaiable in the office; orders must be placed by September 14. Lulavim will be distributed in school before Sukkot.
