Webster Middle School Exchange
Fourteen eighth grade students from Webster Middle School in Waukegan came to CJHS on Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. to develop a partnership with the senior class. The junior class also participated in the program as they prepare to partner as seniors with next year's eighth graders. The group watched the movie "Freedom Writers" then broke out into small discussion groups to explore how the issues raised in the movie -- racial diversity and education -- affect their lives. Yasher Koach to Nicole Wiznitzer, Nina Kiken, Kate Kupferberg and Zack Kamin who planned the event. Kate and Zack will be leading the partnership next year. Thank you also to Ralph Schwartz (Webster Social Worker and CJHS parent) and Ron Griffin (Webster 8th grade team leader), and Rabbi Barkan for facilitating the process. |
Cinco De Mayo Mrs. Debbie Brejcha's second year Spanish class celebrated cinco de Mayo on ocho de Mayo (to accommodate students who were not able to be in class on the fifth). The students wore Dora Exploradora hats to honor Dora Geraty. Lots of food was shared; Leonardo Kruhle made smoothies for the class to toast with. Salud! The students preformed their patient/doctor skits, while the audience sat on the bleachers. The party ended with the breaking of the piñata. (Alex found a stick.) A good time was had by all, including some English speakers who joined in the fun. |
Seniors/Staff Basketball Game
This past Tuesday, the senior boys went head-to- head against a bunch of teachers in a monumental, friendly game of basketball. This event was hosted by the seniors in their efforts to fundraise for the senior class gift. There was a great showing at the game and the crowd was just as excited as the players were. The senior boys were sporting their NBA jerseys while the teachers forced themselves into Tiger Junior Varsity jerseys that were altogether too tight. The game featured many memorable moments, such as Mr. Scher's improv dance routine, Coach Rob Davis's block on Danny Silver, Mr. Gross's frequent and outrageous fixing of the score, and Jeremy Hulkower's extremely impressive three-point shot. Recovering from a brief illness, David Israel returned to score nine points for his team.

The game ended 44-36, senior boys over the staff. Those naysayers expressing doubt that the staff managed to score so high undercut the impressive basketball playing skills of Rabbi Barkan and Mr. Taylor, as well as the enthusiastic participation of maintenance engineer Igor Burda and several of the athletic coaches. The game was held at high energy throughout its entirety, and all were pleased to watch their favorite teachers and friends battle it out on the court. Hopefully this game will remain a tradition long after the Class of 2009 leaves our building. |

עֵת לָטַעַת, וְעֵת לַעֲקוֹר נָטוּעַ׃

Now the time to plant has come. The Memorial Garden will be dedicated to Bev Fox and initiated as a student biology garden on Wednesday May 20 at 4:30 p.m.
If you have bought a flower in memory of Bev Fox, please join us for a planting ceremony. The entire community is invited to join us and celebrate the beginning of our new garden!

Students in the News
Congratulations to junior Ariel Stoltz, who presented his Physics Expo project at the Skokie Valley Astronomers club last weekend. Ariel's lecture on black holes was very well received, and although he wasn't able to work in as many humorous Simpsons clips as planned, his exposition of black holes, white holes, and wormholes was second to none. Ariel's Skokie Valley debut comes on the heels of his earlier achievement: "Earliest CJHS Student Ever to Finish His Physics Expo," completing his first-class PowerPoint on February 18, a full three months before the project was due.
Speaking of Ariel Stoltz, he has had quite a week, hasn't he? The Library of Congress Center for the Book has named him a Level III finalist in the Letters About Literature promotion. Ariel finished in the top 12 students in the state of Illinois. For his entry, Ariel wrote a letter to James McBride, author of The Color of Water, reflecting on the impact the book made in his life. Mazel tov to Ariel for his effort and achievement!
Congratulations to senior Rachel Braun, whose essay, "Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal," won $200 for the best essay in the high school category addressing Palestinian-Israeli peace activism through "Student Pluralism Interfaith Network" (SPIN) and "One Voice." QuarkNet
How many Archimedean solids can you design? What is a hypercube and how can it help you visualize 4-dimensional space? Ask Dr. J. W. "Josh" Burton, who came by on Wednesday to visit QuarkNet, CJHS's particle physics research team. By request of our student leaders, he treated the group to a lecture about 4-dimensional space and spacetime.
One of the only truly excellent physicists ever to come out of Harvard (quoth an MIT alumnus), Dr. Burton was a postdoctoral fellow in high-energy physics at Northwestern University, is currently employed in financial computing, and is the undisputed physics king of the Egalitarian Minyan. He is looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with QuarkNet as he enlightens our budding physicists on the intricacies of quantum mechanics and differential equations.

Mr. Marom shared with our students a short movie about different outreach programs that ELEM provides and his personal realization of the huge need of loving hands and hearts for these young adults. Donate to Emergency Tuition Fund
The Emergency Tuition Fund was recently created in response to our community's growing need for tuition assistance, precipitated by the dramatic shifts in the economy. Over 50 percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance and the dollar amount allocated to scholarships has increased by 20 percent. In spite of this increase, we remain committed to all of our students and do not want financial hardship to stand in the way of anyone benefitting from the excellent education CJHS offers. In fact, the positive response CJHS has received to its appeal is a testament to the scope of this community's compassion. If you have not already done so, please consider donating to the Emergency Tuition Fund and giving a student the gift of education. To make a gift, please click here. For more information, please contact Stephanie Smerling, Director of Institutional Advancement, at ssmerling@cjhs.org or 847.324.3720.

| Refuah Shleimah
A refuah shleimah to the entire women's soccer team, whose hard-fought game against Cristo Rey yesterday left the players with some new bumps and bruises. So if you see a CJHS girl limping down the hall, give her a Tiger cheer and pat her on the back... but not too hard!
Come out and support your girls soccer team on Sunday, May 17 when they take on Ida Crown in their final game of the season. The game is at 10:30 AM at Lake Forest Academy, 1500 W. Kennedy Rd., Lake Forest. |

Don't Forget to Count the Omer
Today is 36 days, which is five weeks and one day of the Omer. The kabbalistic feature of the day is Chesed b'Yesod, a reliability tempered with lovingkindness. In preparation for Shavuot, be a stable and reliable partner.
