Emergency Tuition Fund Gets Jump Start
CJHS is proud to announce that its Spring Appeal for the Emergency Tuition Fund has been rewarded with many generous responses. Thank you to those who have responded to our appeal; to date, we have raised over $100,000. The Emergency Tuition Fund was recently created in response to our community's growing need for tuition assistance, precipitated by the dramatic shifts in the economy. Over 50% of our students receive some form of financial assistance and the dollar amount allocated to scholarships has increased by 20%. In spite of this increase, we remain committed to all of our students and do not want financial hardship to stand in the way of anyone benefitting from the excellent education CJHS offers. In fact, the positive response CJHS has received to its appeal is a testament to the scope of this community's compassion. If you have not already done so, please consider donating to the Emergency Tuition Fund and giving a student the gift of education. To make a gift, please click here. For more information, please contact Stephanie Smerling, Director of Institutional Advancement, at ssmerling@cjhs.org or 847-324-3720.

Yom HaZikaron
Va'ad Israel led a meaningful ceremony following tefillah on Yom HaZikaron. The ceremony was dedicated to the memory of the soldiers of Israel who have been killed in the service of protecting their country.
Yom HaAtzmaut
CJHS was full of blue and white on Yom HaAtzmaut, from the flags in the gym and dining hall to the clothing that people were wearing. Our celebrations began with festive tefillot, followed by two periods of special activities. Gil Hoffman, a Chicago native and Jerusalem Post writer, spoke to our students about politics in Israel, the elections, and the relationship between Israel and America. The students were extremely responsive to him and asked very insightful questions.
While one group was listening to Gil Hoffman, the other students were playing Israelogy, a game show created by Va'ad Israel. The game show helped students increase their knowledge about Israel and included questions about Israeli culture, technology, music, films, and several rounds of "Identify the Israeli" among a series of pictures. In the middle of the day, the whole school gathered for an Israeli fiesta catered by Mizrahi Grill. While devouring falafel, hummus, French fries, and Israeli salad, everyone listened to Israeli music and watched a slideshow about different sites in Israel. Yasher koach to Va'ad Israel, and particularly Karen Avidar, Ron Schrag, Alex Krule, LeeTal Gabel, and Gabe Rubin, for all of their work on Yom HaAtzmaut. Kol hakavod to Becca Gore, who created the phenomenal PowerPoint for the Israelogy game. Many thanks to Gvt. Amit-Sharon and Gvt. Cohen for planning and supervising the activities for Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha-Atzma'ut.
Thanks also to Shorashim and JNF's Caravan for Democracy for bringing Gil Hoffman to CJHS.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Speaks to Students about Darfur CJHS students were privileged this week to speak with two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Paul F. Salopek, Foreign Correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, on his experiences reporting in war zones, especially Darfur. Salopek spoke to students via conference call, as he is currently in the Congo, and students were able to ask him about his personal experiences, how the media's coverage of war zones may or may not make a difference, and how to define the word "genocide." Salopek began his journalism career in 1985 when his motorcycle broke down in Roswell, N.M., and he took a police-reporting job at the local newspaper to earn repair money. Since then, he has worked as a correspondent in Africa, the Balkans and Central Asia. CJHS was fortunate enough to speak with him after his recent engagement at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center's symposium on Ethics of Reporting Genocide in the Media. Thank you to Dr. Gary Auslander for coordinating the program and to Paul Salopek himself, whose experiences are both fascinating and inspirational. |

Don't Forget to Count the Omer
Today is 22 days, which is two weeks and one day of the Omer. The kabbalistic feature of the day is Chesed b'Netzach, endurance and foresight tempered with lovingkindness. In preparation for Shavuot, give yourself the opportunity to do a deed of love whose effect will be long-lasting and meangingful.
This feature was mistakenly listed last week. E-News apologizes for the error. Last Friday's feature was Chesed b'Tiferet, compassion tempered with lovingkindness. To blend those virtues, one must express compassion without condescension, with genuine warmth and not by rote.
Many online resources are available to send daily Omer reminders via email, including chabad.org, ou,org, and torah.org.
