Never Again: Youth United for Darfur

darfur logo
This past Sunday, 500 high school students from all over the Chicago area gathered in the rain at the Federal Plaza in Chicago to show their support for the people in Darfur and urge the Obama administration to act on the Sudanese genocide.  This rally was a culmination of a Chicago-wide fundraising effort, lasting 10 weeks and raising almost $16,000. Through raising awareness in their local communities, student activists supported the ENOUGH Project's Sister Schools program, which provides educational opportunities in eastern Chad to children displaced by the Darfur crisis, and the local Sudanese Community Center that meets the human service needs of Illinois residents of Sudanese descent.

The event included speakers such as Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky; Deng, a Lost Boy of Sudan;  Ashal Yai, a native Sudanese poet, and others.  There were also performances by many local bands, a short presentation by USY and BBYO representatives and a tent with representatives from Amnesty International and Youth United for Darfur.  The rally was a huge success and was covered by many local TV stations and newspapers, such as ABC, the Tribune, WGN and WBBM.  You can read the article from the Pioneer Press here.

Thanks to the 20 students from CJHS who went to the rally, and especially to Eliana Fisher, Noah Weinberg, and Benji Fleischacker who went early and stayed late to make everything happen.  Also thanks to the many students in the CJHS STAND club who helped plan the rally and participated in the fundraising efforts of the Youth United for Darfur group.  If you are interested in hearing updates from Youth United for Darfur or learning more about the rally and what it accomplished, please go to the website or email Noa at noadaphne@yahoo.com.
Yom HaShoah Ve'Hagevurah

survivor

This past Tuesday, the CJHS community commemorated Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, with a special program that featured a survivor's testimony, a musical presentation by the choir, and an all-school art project. Students began the program in the Beit Knesset, where they listened to Mr. Frank Stern talk about his experiences as a young child in Frankfurt, Germany and how his family managed to find safety in Switzerland, England, and finally, the United States. Mr. Stern discussed the political climate of Germany prior to war and how, even as a child, he could see the gradual marginalization of Jews from society. Mr. Stern's story was followed by a question and answer session and the choir's renditions of "Eli, Eli," "Zog Nit Kein Mol," and finally "Hatikvah."

painting

Six large black panels were painted with simple brushstokes of color by students and faculty throughout the morning. Each brushstoke was to be symbolic of and individual, man, woman or child who perished in the flames of the Holocaust. "The artwork is simple but powerful, the bright colors look like flames against the dark background. The six panels will be hung together in the school as a special CJHS Holocaust Memorial," said Mrs. Marla Snyder, who conceived and coordinated the project. A special thank you to Dr. Roberta Miller and our parent volunteers, Joanne Licht and Melissa Spellman.

Trip to Sudanese Community Center

The Jewish World Watch/STAND organization of CJHS is arranging a visit to Chicago's Sudanese Community Center for Sunday, May 31.  At the center, our group will discuss current African events with Sudanese community leaders and participate in cultural activities of the region.  This trip culminates a year of education at CJHS about the current crisis in Darfur.  Alll students and faculty are invited to come on this momentous excursion.

A bus will leave CJHS on Sunday morning and return in time for Dance Marathon in the afternoon.  Stay tuned for further details about the day's schedule.  If you are interested in coming on the trip, please contact Jordy Shapiro Jdshapkid@aol.com or Noa Fleischacker noadaphne@yahoo.com.

Seniors Meet Seniors

On Wednesday, we were privileged to have ten of our neighbors, residents from the Gidwitz assisted living facitility, join us for lunch.  Twenty-five students came to chat with the our guests during lunch, and there was a lot of good conversation and laughter throughout the room as our seniors interacted with their seniors.  The Gidwitz seniors then joined with Rabbi Barkan's freshman Bible class to study about David's affair with Bat Sheva.  One particularly enthusiastic gentleman described Wednesday as "one of the best days of his life," citing the vibrancy of the Jewish teens whom he met at our school and the depth of education they have already achieved.  We are delighted to have hosted such a successful sharing experience, and we look forward to regular get-togethers with our neighbors at Gidwitz!

Don't Forget to Count the Omer

cjhs.imageNot only are CJHS students counting down to graduation day in five weeks, they are also performing a mitzvah!  Today is fifteen days, which is two weeks and one day of the Omer.  The kabbalistic feature of the day is Chesed b'Netzach, lovingkindness tempered with endurance and foresight.  In preparation for Shavuot, give yourself the opportunity to do a deed of love whose effect will be long-lasting and meangingful.

Many online resources are available to send daily Omer reminders via email, including chabad.org, ou.org, and torah.org.
