Model U.N. takes on New York
Adam Schneider, Adam Seidenberg, Rachel Binstock, Brett Kopin, Chaya Moskovits, Hauna Trimble, Jack Dreifuss, Benjy Forester, Rachel Garfinkel, Ellie Honan, Iszy Licht, Gabe Rubin, Daniel Silver, Sammy Simon, Zach Spellman, Karen Avidar, Naseem Parsa, Jacob Rabinowitz, Julia Perelman and Ariel Stoltz arrived in New York City on Wednesday morning, checking into the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan and attending opening ceremonies at the U.N. building presided over by the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Daniel Carmon. Over 2,000 high school students from all over the country are participating in the conference. Our students have been preparing position papers on Panama and Paraguay and researching assigned topics which they will present during committee deliberations. Students are assigned countries and work on committees dealing with women's issues and international warfare, among other issues. This is an intense program where our students will learn firsthand the workings of the United Nations. Many thanks to club advisor Ms. Myra Loris and Dr. Gary Auslander for accompanying the group. |

Churros Day
On Thursday, March 12, CJHS students of Spanish I and II were privileged to host Chef Laura Frankel as she demonstrated how to make Churros, a traditional Spanish delicacy. Executive Chef at the Wolfgang Puck Kosher Catering and cafe at Spertus Institute for Jewish studies, Frankel is also the founder and former chef of Shallots Bistro, as well as the author of Jewish Cooking for all Seasons. Chef Frankel is also, of course, the mother of Jonah Frankel, César en la clase. Students watched as Frankel mixed dough and fried the churros, then tasted the prism-shaped donuts dipped in various shades of chocolate. According to CJHS Spanish teacher Deborah Brejcha, the event was an opportunity for students to experience Spanish culture in a different setting. "This isn't your typical street vendor," she said. "This is the real thing."

Lishma
Chicagoland Jewish High School's Lishma Adult Education program launches the second installment of this year's series on Wednesday, April 1, with Trinity International University's Professor James K. Hoffmeier leading the session, "Recent Archaeological Data and the Exodus from Egypt." Dr. Hoffmeier has appeared on a number of television programs on Egypt and the Bible as well as authored and edited a number of books on the subject. With Passover beginning only a week later, this lecture is especially relevant.
The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at CJHS, and doors open at 7:00 p.m. Suggested minimum donation for the session is $18; parking will be available at the school. For reservations, please contact Bobbie Wolk at 847.324.3723 or rwolk@cjhs.org. |

Jerusalem Science Contest
Congratulations to Louis Shekhtman, Jeremy Hulkower, and Esther Lowe, this year's CJHS envoys to the Jerusalem Science Contest. The JSC is sponsored by the Jerusalem College of Technology and IDT, Inc., and encourages Jewish day school students to compete in science for college scholarships, cash prizes, and a free trip to Israel. This year's contest involved 12 weeks of intensive study in nuclear physics, followed by a comprehensive exam. Louis Shekhtman placed 8th out of 34 finalists, earning himself a cool $175. Esther Lowe and Jeremy Hulkower tied for 12th place, earning $125 apiece. Our very own Jeremy Hulkower was given the honor of presenting the dvar Torah at the awards ceremony on Monday night. Jeremy's topic was the sequence of the ten plagues--a study in psychological impact and challenge to a majority culture. The presentation was done with grace and humor, especially when the sign hanging behind him crashed to the ground! He turned around, saw what happened, ad libbed, "Ah, yet another sign and wonder!" then proceeded with the rest of his dvar Torah. The drash was received extremely well, eliciting many laughs, nods of heads, and thoughtful responses. Almost everyone came up to Jeremy afterward to congratulate him on a job well done--some asked if he had done drama, as he really used his voice and body to express his thoughts. Congratulations to Jeremy on a first-class presentation of science and Torah! |

Pi Day
On Friday March 13 , one day early, students honored the famous transcendental number π (3.14159...). Besides eating pie, the day included an incredible math show by the human calculator, Michael Byster. Michael, a former commodities trader, has been visiting schools all around the nation for the past two years. Students and faculty were amazed when Mike was able to add thirteen two digit numbers in his head and then divide the sum by a different two digit number, and carry the answer out to more decimal places than their calculators. Then he showed the students some techniques to help them retain and organize lots of information in their heads. Mike is currently working on marketing his product, Brainetics, which he developed to help people of all ages sharpen their minds and improve their concentration and focus. The students and faculty really enjoyed Mike's show, and he has promised to return before the end of the year to work with the AP students before they are off to college! |
Goodbye Sabbath Queen... Hello Purim Queen!
On Saturday night March 10, CJHS parents had the opportunity to mark the end of Shabbat together with a Melaveh Malkah (literally, accompanying the Sabbath Queen) at the home of CJHS parents Sandra and Mark Levin. The Melaveh Malkah, a community-building event, began with Havdalah and was punctuated by games, desserts and hilarious icebreakers. CJHS would like to thank the Levins for their generosity in hosting this event, as well as Solomon Schechter teacher and CJHS parent Betsy Forester, who led Havdalah. A great time was had by all.

March Madness for Israel will feature celebrity referee Coach Lavon Mercer, formerly of the San Antonio Spurs, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and the IDF. Ain't got game? Come to watch! Play some video games or try out the bilingual karaoke! One way or another, don't miss out!

All School Shabbaton
Next week at this time, more than 100 members of the CJHS community will be at Camp Chi for the Spring All-School Shabbaton. From Friday afternoon fun at a waterpark to an incredible Shabbat spent with friends, it will be an event everyone will remember for a long time. Many students consider Shabbatonim to be the highlight of the CJHS Student Life experience. We are thrilled this year to be joined by ten students from our sister school, Tichon Meir, in Kiryat Gat! Watch this space in two weeks for a review of our adventures on the Shabbaton.

As you're cleaning for Pesach, you might run across extra benchers from weddings, bnai mitzvah, and other family celebrations. If you want to put them to good use (and be able to close the bencher drawer again), please consider donating them to CJHS. We'll make good use of them! |
