Rosh Chodesh Adar
Mishenichnas Adar marbim b'simcha. When Adar begins, joy increases.
As the month of Adar began this week, so did celebrations of irreverence and joy. You know it's Adar at CJHS when the morning niggun (the chant we use to open Tefillah) is replaced by "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." This month will be full of festivities and fun, including Adarama, the conclusion of the scavenger hunt, Purim dance, Purim itself, the Spring Musical, and much more. |
Lady Tigers Take on Baltimore!

The Lady Tigers wind up their season this week by representing CJHS in an exciting basketball tournament/shabbaton sponsored by Beth Tfiloh School in Baltimore. The girls join teams from Jewish day schools around the country to participate in this exciting venue. After three games, the girls have compiled a 1-2 record. The team plays a semi-final game on Friday morning at 10:30, and in the final round on Saturday night at 7:45. The tournament website is located at http://www.bethtfiloh.com/podium/default.aspx?t=17203 and has scores, photos and other details from the tournament. Let's cheer on our team and hope that they bring back some hardware!

One Lady Tiger, sophomore Shelby Cooper, is one of the top three-point shooters at 1A high schools in the state! After winning regional, sectional, and super-sectional rounds, Shelby went "downstate" to Illinois State University on Thursday to compete against the 32 best 1A three-point shooters in the state. Shelby tied with three other girls to become the 7th best shooter in the state! She hit 8 of 15 three-pointers in 45 seconds, and was just short of being one of the four finalists who go in to compete on Friday. Shelby, we are all so proud of your accomplishment and know that you represented CJHS well! |

Fermi Lab Physicist Speaks to Chem Classes
Dr. Scott Dodelson, astrophysicist at Fermi Lab in Batavia and father of CJHS sophomore Ilana Dodelson, spoke to Mr. Urick and Mrs. Levinson's chemistry classes on Tuesday. Dr. Dodelson dealt with the heart of atomic structure as he talked about elementary particles within the atom as well as Fermi's quest to find the Higgs boson which may prove to unlock the mystery of mass and the essence of the universe. He also brought up the hot topics of "dark matter" and "dark energy" which are thought to make up 96% of the universe. He stressed that this 96% is as of yet unknown and remains the ultimate challenge of future scientists (i.e. some of our students) to unlock its mystery. His presentation was provocative and stimulating and certainly raised more questions than it answered! |

| Winter Sports Wrapup
The Swim Team season came to a culmination this week with several exciting events, including a hotly contested Blue vs. White intra-squad scrimmage, a team dinner/awards ceremony on Thursday, and a "Bring a Prospective New Member Swim" also on Thursday. Congratulations to sophomore Sarah Scheinman and senior Yaakov Calamaro, who were named most valuable swimmers this year. Also, let's give a big shout out to second-year coaches Lee Cohn and Michael Weiss without whom this program would not be possible. The Men's Basketball Team season also ended this week with an excellent showing in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) regional tournament. In Monday's opening round, the team defeated a competitve IFS squad 54-43. Junior Danny Eisenberg contributed 19 points in one of his best games of the year, while senior Victor Abecassis scored 12 points in yet another excellent game. In the semi-final round on Wednesday, CJHS led top-seeded North Shore Country day for three quarters, but couldn't hang on at the end. "Slick Vic" Abecassis had 17 points, and sophomore Aaron Cohn added eight of his own. Congratulations to seniors Ron Schrag and Alan Bukingolts who won two rounds of the IHSA three-point contest and compete again on Friday. If they win this final Regional round, the players will move on to the Sectionals.

Last Shabbat, twelve student leaders on the Va'ad Tefillah planned and celebrated their own Shabbaton hosted by the Ner Tamid Ezra Habonim Egalitarian Minyan in West Rogers Park. The entire group gathered at the Bier house for services and a delicious home-cooked dinner, followed by a program where the students reflected upon their unique role as a member of the Va'ad Tefillah and their Jewish identity. After joining the Egalitarian Minyan for services the next morning, students had lunch and played a traditional Va'ad Tefillah game of Mafia, as well as structuring conversations to facilitate individual bonding. The program closed with Seudah Shlishit, Minchah, Maariv and havdalah as the Va'ad Tefillah "bonded together like the braided havdalah candle," one enthusiastic student remarked, "renewed and ready for a strong finish to the year in Tefillah." |

Tikkun Olam Day...
Wednesday at CJHS was All-School Tikkun Olam Day. All other after-school activities were canceled, and students were encouraged to participate in one of the activities going on through out the day. The Youth Philanthropy Initiative officially kicked off "Adarama" by selling Breadsmith to benefit Teen Living Program. Students volunteered at the Ark and stayed for discussion with the clients. Others packed up care packages to be sent to American soldiers abroad, and the Environmental Club watched The Story of Stuff while painting the recycling bins (check them out!). Thanks to everyone for participating, and keep your eyes out for the next Va'ad Tikkun Olam Day on March 25!
...and Adarama!
YPI, CJHS's fundraising challenge for teens, is raising money for Teen Living Programs, a Chicago center for underprivileged teenagers. Teen Living Programs serve youth ages 12 to 24 who became homeless because of serious family issues, including substance abuse, and physical or sexual abuse. This past year TLP helped more than 500 teenagers throughout Chicago, and we want to do our part. Throughout the month of Adar, YPI is hosting various fun events to raise money for the teens at TLP centers. This week's activity is the much-awaited silent auction, where students and community members can bid on various items. Gift cards? Homework passes? Treat yourself or your friends to a Cubs game with Rabbi Goldberg, an ACT review session with Mr. Scher, the Mr. Landau Star Wars experience (popcorn and extraneous comedy included!), a round of Torah study with Mrs. Eliaser... maybe even a Scavenger Hunt clue! Head over to cjhsypi.blogspot.com and place your bids! |
AP Exams
The AP exams will be administered at CJHS during the weeks of May 4 and May 11. Students enrolled in AP courses have already received registration forms. Additional registration forms are available in the College Counseling office. The fee for each exam this year is $86. Registration forms and payment are due no later than March 9. |

Scavenger Hunt Carries On
With two days to go on the All-School Scavenger Hunt, the competition is getting fierce. Eight out of the 21 teams are down to their last few clues and racing to the finish line. Stalwart captains Eliana Fisher, Victor Abecassis, Jacob Rabinowitz, and Aliza Small have spurred on their teams as they vie for victory, with Jordy Shapiro's men and Talia Stoehr's posse nipping at their heels! Which of them will find the hidden pesukim first? Whose little surprise from the "gamadim" will be most charming? And how many of them know what a hexagram is? Stay tuned!
Through this eventful week, hidden hints have popped up around the school in all sorts of interesting places: minchah-riffic afternoon hints for the Faithful, musical hints played on the P.A. system during advisory, paper hints posted on school walls. Today's E-News hint:
Clue #18 - A certain Hebrew text
Try looking in אמרי אפרים or תהילת השם. You won't find it in שים שלום, that's for sure! |

Five Questions For...
...Mr. Harvey Gross!
Beloved by all of his students, Harvey Gross has taught history at CJHS since 2004. Outside of the classroom, however, Mr. Gross is known to many as "Mr. Basketball" as he is our teams' number one fan! Whether he is in the stands or working the scoreboard, Mr. Gross is as dedicated to CJHS basketball players as he is to his students. He reflects here on his association with CJHS basketball.
In the five years you have been at CJHS, how many basketball games do you think you've seen?
Since coming to CJHS in September, 2004 I estimate that I've attended 250+ games, including men's varsity, men's junior varsity, and women's games.
What changes have you seen in the basketball program over the past five years?
We are certainly playing a much higher caliber of basketball, both men's and women's teams. This is a consequence of the experience of our athletes in summer competition, better coaching, and higher quality opponents. Of course, our beautiful new facility adds so much to the program.
What's your fondest memory from this season?
There are many fond memories from this season. The men's varsity tournament in Memphis was a great experience for our players. On the court we may have been only 2 and 2. But off the court, it was great to meet Jewish day school students from across the country. And the sights we saw in Memphis, especially the National Civil Rights Museum (on the site of the former Loraine Motel), were very moving. The Lady Knights' regional win and the men's junior varsity's outstanding record, including a win over the Ida Crown Jewish Academy, were also among the highlights of a very successful season.
What does basketball teach our student-athletes? Leadership, sportsmanship, and character top my list. We can all be very proud of our ballplayers on all these points.
How did you develop a love for basketball?
I never played basketball in school. My sports were football, wrestling, and the shot put. However, I taught for twenty years at Providence-St. Mel High School in Chicago, a school with a long record of excellence in basketball. In the 1980s this school made the Sweet Sixteen four straight years, taking the Class A (small school) state title in 1985. I was statistician and #1 fan. Now I consider high school basketball my favorite sport to watch and the most exciting sport at any level, prep, college, or professional.
Do you have any game day superstitions?
I used to wear a CJHS headband, then a CJHS warmup jersey. However, I don't do these regularly anymore. So I guess the answer is that I don't have any game day superstitions
What's your usual pre-game meal?
Victor doesn't allow me to eat anymore.
What's the secret to happiness?
Hitting 90% of our free throws. |
