CJHS Goes Green for Tu B'Shevat

tu b'shevatUsually, CJHS is full of teenagers. Not this past Sunday! The excitement was contagious when, in celebration of the recent holiday of Tu B'Shevat, CJHS hosted a community-wide Tu B'Shevat celebration targeted especially at children and their families. Planned and coordinated by the Jewish National Fund and many other co-sponsors, including the JCCs of Chicago, the Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Forest Service, the event featured hands-on activities, Israeli music, live dancing, and great food. In CJHS's gym-turned-forest, children enjoyed meeting Smokey the Bear, planting saplings, "polluting" water, making stained-glass trees, and taking part in a myriad of other activities whose focus was Israel and the environment. They even had a chance to say hi to the children of Sderot.

CJHS is proud to host such events, thereby building the Chicago community even as it builds its own.
Curriculum Night Draws A Crowd

tony frank

Faculty, students and prospective families gathered together this past Monday night for Curriculum and Beyond, CJHS' evening for 8th graders and transfer students who wish to learn more about the school. Despite the unexpected rain that night, Curriculum and Beyond attracted 37 families and featured opportunities for both parents and students to discover the school in ways that were uniquely relevant to them. For instance, the evening began with brief presentations by faculty department heads, who discussed not only the material they teach, but the often overwhelming transition from 8th grade to high school.

presentationFor parents, the presentations were followed by a Q & A session, during which the students were welcomed into the cafeteria, where they were plied with snacks, divided into teams, and led by current students into the building for a scavenger hunt. Their evening concluded with watching some hilarious photo montages created by CJHS students, and the chance to ask their soon-to-be schoolmates some informal questions. Overall, guests were impressed by our outstanding staff, dedication to a traditional yet progressive curriculum, and the atmosphere of compassion so readily visible to anyone who walks through the school. We hope our guests enjoyed visiting us as much as we enjoyed hosting them.

Welcome, Class of 2013!

On Wednesday, February 11, students from CJHS, Loyola Academy, and Universal School got together to discuss the movie Encounter Point.
The movie illustrated how Israelis and Arabs who were both affected by the war came together to discuss their frustrations and to get to know each other on a personal level.  The students discussed their opinions about the movie and what characters they resonated with the most.  In addition, the students spoke about the Israeli elections and the recent conflict.  Each of the small group discussions was respectful and mindful of differing opinions.

Darfur Activism Week Continues

This past week was Darfur Awareness and Activism Week at CJHS.  Starting last Friday with a showing of the movie The Devil Came on Horseback and small group discussions, students learned about how they can personally help the people in Darfur throughout the week in their classes and during tefillah programs.  We would like to thank everyone in STAND for all of their hard work to make this week possible.  Stay tuned for a full report next week!
Tiger Sharks Excel

cjhs.image Last Thursday, the swim team had a full varsity meet against Lake Forest Academy. The CJHS team had over 13 personal best times against an experienced Lake Forest Academy team and set several school records. Despite winning the opening medley relay and getting off to a great start, CJHS lost the meet by a very small margin of 20 points. Senior Yaakov Calamaro broke his own school record for the 50 freestyle, while senior Elli Cohn placed second in cjhs.imagethe 100 breast. Sophomore Adam Rudolph had an extremely close second-place finish in his first 500 freestyle in an exciting race, and freshman Steven Edelman did very well in the difficult 100 butterfly and 200 IM.

After a disappointing last-minute loss last Thursday to St. Martin de Porres, the men's basketball team recorded both JV and varsity wins against Yeshiva on Saturday night at home. Saturday was also "Senior Night," where seniors Victor Abecassis, Alan Bukingolts, Ron Schrag, and Danny Silver were honored. Both teams continued their winning ways with wins at Cristo Rey on Monday night. On Thursday, team members traveled to Evanston for the Northwestern vs. Illinois men's basketball game and a little team bonding.

The Lady Tigers made CJHS history by winning its first game in the IHSA state tournament on Tuesday night. The girls defeated Evanston's Roycemore at the tournament regionals at North Shore Country Day in one of the best games the team has played all year. With multiple "three-balls" by sophomore Shelby Cooper, tough rebounding at both ends of the court by junior Aliza Shapiro, and skilled inside play by sophomore Alison Dreifuss, this is clearly a team to watch! The Lady Tigers stepped it up during Wednesday's second-round game against top-seeded North Shore Country, but came up short against a very experienced team. Best of luck to freshman Lauren Steinberg and sophomore Shelby Cooper, who made it to the final round for the three-point contest. The team will prepare over the next couple of weeks to play in the Beth Tfiloh Weiner basketball tournament in Baltimore February 25 - March 1.

Athlete of the Week
alanMazel tov to senior Alan Bukingolts, who is this week's "Athlete of the Week." A four-year member of the CJHS basketball team, Alan played his best game of the year on Monday against a quick, pressing Cristo Rey. According to head varsity coach Saul Shaoul, "Alan filled a huge void when starters Victor Abecassis and Danny Eisenberg were unable to play in the game. He demonstrated important leadership in a closely contested game and was instrumental in CJHS getting the win." Alan is the son of Mira Bukingolts and lives in Niles.

Looking Ahead
It's not too early to think spring sports!  CJHS spring teams include men's tennis, women's soccer, women's badminton, and coed ultimate frisbee. Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and begin in March. See Mr. Cohen if you have questions.

Are you in middle school?  A boy who likes basketball?  Look for details soon on the new CJHS Middle School Basketball Feeder League that begins this spring.

Regional Bridge Contest

bridge

Congratulations to seniors Victor Abecassis, Ellie Honan, Danny Silver, and Jack Dreifuss, who competed at Illinois Institute of Technology in the Chicago Regional Bridge Building Contest.  This year's design requirements were especially challenging, and our four contestants were dismayed to discover that several load-bearing beams in their elegantly minimalist pyramid structures interfered with the loading pillars put in place by the contest!  With the clock ticking, Team bridgeCJHS disassembled both its bridges by hand, and using nothing but determination, a borrowed x-acto knife, and a tube of the world's worst superglue, build a brand-new structure out of the scraps.  A new design was hastily laid out--tensions ran high when someone accidentally superglued Victor's fingers to the bridge--and the four seniors rushed their new model in a full two minutes before the judging deadline!

bridge Despite these phenomenal setbacks, Team CJHS still made the final round of the competition, taking home a bronze medal which is now on display in the physics classroom.  CJHS also congratulates Thornton Township High School, who loaned us the building supplies, for their performance in the South Suburban division.

Mishloach Manot

Purim is coming soon! This year, CJHS's Youth Philanthrophy Initiative is sponsoring the annual Mishloach Manot drive for the school community. Students, faculty, and staff can purchase Purim baskets for friends and colleagues. Every CJHS family will receive a basket of delicious treats.

Purchase Mishloach Manot for individual families at $5 per family, or donate $120 to sponsor Mishloach Manot for the entire school (200 baskets). The proceeds this drive will be divided evenly between Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger, to fulfill our obligation at Purim -- and throughout the year -- to feed those in need, and Teen Living Programs, the YPI-selected charity for this school year. Order forms have been placed in student mailboxes and have also been sent by e-mail. You can also download an order form here. (Please note that even with a high-speed connection, this document will take about a minute to load.)

Please make checks payable to CJHS, and return order forms and checks to the front office by February 27.
Mock Israeli Election

On Tuesday, while Israelis cast their ballots, CJHS students participated in a mock election. Va'ad Israel simplified the process a bit by providing a ballot with three options for Prime Minister--Binyamin Netanyahu, Tzipi Livni, and Ehud Barak--while providing information about each of these leaders. Shortly before the polls closed in Israel, results were announced for the CJHS race, with Netanyahu garnering 41% of the vote, Livni taking 39%, and Barak receiving 19%.

Many thanks to Gabe Rubin, Va'ad Israel's Political VP, for coordinating the mock election.

Please see a member of the Shabbaton Committee.

Philanthropist Visits YPI

ypiCJHS's Youth Philanthropy Initiative, a group of students dedicated to enhancing the ways CJHS gives tzedakah, hosted philanthropist Dr. Betsy Gidwitz for lunch this past Wednesday. YPI will be donating the first $5,000 and 75 percent of any additional funds that are raised to a local charitable organization, this year, to Teen Living, an organization that rehabilitates homeless teens in Chicago.  Half of all the dollars raised from selling Mishloach Manot will be donated to Mazon, a Jewish organization that tackles world hunger.

YPI member Ellie Honan found Gidwitz's talk inspiring as did Brett Kopin, who was impressed by "how one person can have an effect over the lives of others."   Like many of CJHS' student Tikkun Olam ventures, YPI is a student-generated initiative that asks fellow students to think in a very real way about the problems facing the world and how even high school students can still make a difference.

Five Questions For...
elli and yaakov
...Elli Cohn and Yaakov Calamaro!

Senior Elli Cohn is the founder and captain of the CJHS swim team.  Elli, who also ran cross-country in the fall, is headed to Muhlenberg College next year.  Senior Yaakov Calamaro has been on the swim team for two years.  A year-round athlete, Yaakov was captain of the cross country team in the fall and plays on the tennis and Ultimate frisbee teams in the spring.  Elli and Yaakov were asked about their experience on this year's swim team, which is coached by Lee Cohn and Michael Weiss.

Why did you join the CJHS swim team?
cjhs.imageElli:  I started the swim team last year because I missed being on a swim team.  I thought it would be great to be on a sports team that I love and that fit my time schedule.  It was also an amazing way to become friends with people from different grades.  It also helped that my dad agreed to be the coach...

Yaakov: I read that swimming is the greatest workout a person can get. Also, because I was playing a sport every season of the year except the winter, I wanted to add to it. Growing up, my father would pay me one dollar for every 20 laps I completed at my grandmother's pool. This was a chance to see if that ended up doing anything for me.

What motivates you to swim?
Elli: I love the feeling I get after I finish a hard race.  There is nothing better than looking at the clock and seeing my best time.  I love getting into the rhythm of swimming; my mind can wander and it is my time to just think.

cjhs.image Yaakov: I find that in the freezing temperatures of winter, the one thing I would most not want to do is the best feeling thing I can do. That is to jump into a freezing pool of water and start swimming. My mind rests at ease when I swim, and I don't have to worry about the hours of other work I still have to get done. Also,  I won't beat around the bush: I like an excuse to eat a lot. I've begun realizing that because I have a sport every season of the year, my diet is always well over the recommended daily allowance. I'm starting to realize now that I must always play a sport; otherwise,  it's obvious that I would gain weight at a rapid speed, which is motivation enough to keep me ahead of my body's curve. I also love the feeling right after I'm done swimming--not the tired feeling, but the sense of accomplishment.

Tell me about your favorite swim team memory?
Elli: My favorite swim team memory is actually from this past meet at Lake Forest Academy.  Being captain of the team, it always makes me proud when swimmers improve.  At this past meet, Adam Rudolph swam the 500- yard freestyle. The entire race he was swimming neck and neck with another swimmer from Lake Forest.  The last 50 yards the crowd went wild and I have never been so excited to see one of our swimmers work so hard.  That race truly showed how far we have come over the past two years.

Yaakov: This has happened more than once. I was swimming laps and fell into the rhythm of the water and lost myself in my own thoughts. A few seconds later.....BAM! I slammed head on into Reby, who was headed in the opposite direction.   I had moved over my lane into hers. Reby has always survived, thank God.

Organized athletics have been a big part of your life at CJHS.  What role do you anticipate that athletics will play in your post-CJHS life?
cjhs.imageElli: Since I have participated in sports teams in high school, I definitely intend to play a sport next year in college.  I will attend Muhlenberg College next year, and I plan to run cross-country there. (And swim in my free time, of course!)

Yaakov: As I said before, athletics will have to play a big role in my life, or I will lose the balance I have maintained for years. I know I will also continue athletics because I like to be a part of a team, and know that I'm backed by my friends and competitors.

Regarding Michael Phelps' recent indiscretions, do you believe he is being too severely penalized or not punished harshly enough?
Elli: Michael Phelps can continue to be a role model for us swimmers despite his recent indiscretions.  What Michael does outside of the pool is his own business.  We can still learn much from his swimming technique.

Yaakov: Well, I take this from two different perspectives. I say both, because on one hand the more penalized he is, the less likely he or someone else will commit such an act again. On the other hand, Phelps is an athlete in a new generation. Every person has a video camera on them all the time, thus any indiscretion committed by any athlete can instantly be turned against them. The crime he committed is quite common and most people don't get caught for it. He happened to be an athlete with the spotlight on him in an age where the spotlight is more dangerous than ever before. But personally I like seeing people get punished-- so burn him.  It gives me a better chance of taking his place in the Olympics someday!

cjhs.imageWhat do you think about through the monotony of swimming lap after lap?
Elli: Swimming can become monotonous, but I love distance swimming.  You get in a zone and you become a machine.  Your strokes are long and graceful and each turn improves. After awhile you don't even realize that you are working hard.

Yaakov: This is one of the best parts of swimming for me. I often like to think about random questions of life and more personal aspects to my own life. While swimming I think about the hundreds of theories I constantly develop about life, about God, about matter, about the tiny shine of light you see in a person's eye when a light bulb is not far away. I plan out my time, consider how to handle issues and drama going on.  It seems to me that thinking while swimming is even easier than thinking in the bathroom (which is, of course, a close second).

CJHS E-News acknowledges for the record that this is six questions, not five, and apologizes for the inconvenience.

Freshman Ice Cream Party

What song is up next on your iPod?
Do you squeeze your toothpaste from the top or the bottom?
What's the best thing you've done this week?

These questions and more were abuzz among the freshman class during last week's Surprise Ice Cream Party. The ninth graders arrived in the dining hall curious about the class meeting to which they had been summoned. Suddenly, everybody was given the name of another student and was asked to find that student and hand him an individual cup of ice cream. Each ice cream cup featured a sticker with a question that had to be asked and answered in order for the person to receive the ice cream. It was a great opportunity to take 10 minutes to relax during a busy day!
