Tiger Athletics: Week in Review
After practicing hard all week, the Tiger Shark swimmers swam a full varsity meet against Lake Forest Academy on Thursday. Look in next week's e-news for a full report--plus photos!--on the meet. The Lady Tigers had a great second-half rally on Saturday night and gave the Ida Crown varsity team a scare. Gutsy play by all team members, excellent free-throw percentages, and precise outside shooting propelled the team past St. Martin de Porres on Monday and Northtown Academy on Tuesday. The girls went to a Northwestern vs. Illinois game in Evanston last Thursday night following a pizza party, and honored seniors Karen Avidar, Rachel Binstock, Ellie Honan, and Emily Pogrund at their last home game on Wednesday night. "Seniors" Mr. and Ms. William Shapiro (grandparents of Emily Pogrund) were also honored for attending all of the home basketball games of Emily and her brother Brian Pogrund (CJHS '06). The men's basketball team also had a great week as the junior varsity won by four points in overtime on Saturday night at Northridge Prep, while the varsity lost a close one to the sharp-shooting Northridge Prep varsity team. Both the junior varsity and varsity rolled to easy wins against IFS on Wednesday. With 14 wins and only one loss, our talented JV team currently has the best record of any athletic team in CJHS history! Athlete of the Week
Mazel tov to freshman Jeff Budweg, our "Athlete of the Week." In last Saturday's junior varsity basketball game against Northridge Prep, Jeff, a forward, put back an offensive rebound to tie the score and push the game to overtime. Thanks to his "heads up" play, CJHS went on to win the game and contain the team's losses to "uno." And due to his hard work and discipline, Jeff has improved his game at both ends of the court and has made an important contribution to the team in his freshman year. Jeff is the son of Allan and Sarah Budweg of Northbrook, and is a Solomon Schechter graduate. He played on the CJHS golf team in the fall. Next Week(s) The swim team continues practice in hopeful anticipation of another meet or time trial...Lady Tigers against Roycemore on Tuesday at North Shore Country Day for the IHSA Regionals first round...Men's Basketball vs. Yeshiva at home on Saturday night ("Senior Night"), at Cristo Rey on Monday, to the Northwestern vs. Illinois game on Thursday, and at Ida Crown on Feb. 15. Etc...

Five Questions For...
....Leah Cardona and Aaron Sklar!
Junior Leah Cardona is a transfer from Regina Dominican, where she was on the bowling team. In addition to being on the CJHS bowling team this winter, Leah also plans to play on the girls' soccer team in the spring. Sophomore Aaron Sklar played on the CJHS bowling team in his freshman year (when the team was first organized) and this year. "Sklar" will also play on the CJHS ultimate frisbee team this spring. Leah and Aaron were asked about their experience on this year's bowling team, which was coached by Dr. Gary Auslander. Tell me about your best game of the season.
Leah: My best game this season was when I bowled a 192!!! It was very exciting and I hope to do it again or better in the future!
Aaron: The best game that I had this season was in the 140's. I don't remember anything about that game-- I didn't even remember my highest game of the season. I had to ask Doc (Dr. Auslander) what my high score was this season and I guess that it was in the 140's. When you approach the line and are about to bowl, what goes through your mind? Leah: Please don't let this be a gutter! Aaron: When I go up to the line I first think about the strike that I want to get and where I want to place the ball to get that strike. However, after I throw the ball, I get worried because I remember that I left Iszy with my phone before I started. What's your usual pre-game meal or snack? Leah: Oreos and Chex Mix. Aaron: I don't have a usual pre-game snack. If I have anything before my game I have a couple of Oreos. Other people eat more. Doc has a lot of food, but I just don't want to eat a lot before a bowling meet. I might get sick from being involved in something too intense. What do you plan to do in the off-season to work on your game? Leah: I will most likely continue to bowl with friends and family, and ask Coach for some pointers. Aaron: In the off-season I have an intense training regimen. I would elaborate more on the details, but it is secret and Doc would kill me if I told anyone. What advice do you have for current or future CJHS students who want to join the bowling team?
Leah: They should come and join the team. Even if they are not familiar with the game, it's a fun experience and some extra fun time to spend with your friends. Aaron: If you are a current or future student, you should do bowling. It is a lot of fun and you get to meet other people who you would not have met if you were not bowling. |

Israeli Ambassador to Speak at Moriah Former Israeli UN Ambassador Dan Gillerman, who led Israel's PR efforts for the Gaza operation in the foreign media, will be speaking at Moriah Congregation in Deerfield. Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 5:00 pm. Thanks to our generous community, CJHS students can now attend the lecture for free with valid student ID! With the Israeli general elections taking place only two days after Ambassador Gillerman is with us, and after the role that the ambassador played in the Israeli hasbara campaign during the Gaza operation, lecture attendees will have an opportunity to get a unique insight into up-to-the minute political and military realities in Israel. For more information, go to http://www.moriahcong.org/Event2009.htm. General admission tickets are $36 and are available online, or by calling 847.948.5340. Contact Karen Walanka, speaker@moriahcong.org, for more details.
Please note that there is no general parking at Moriah; parking and a free shuttle bus service is available from Northbrook Court's lower level, east of Neiman Marcus beginning at 4 p.m. We strongly encourage everyone to come early.
The event is being chaired by CJHS parent David Ferri. |

CJHS Collaborates With Local Library
Representatives of the Deerfield Public Library have visited the school on two occasions, to meet the staff, give a quick overview of some of the resources available and to invite collaboration of all sorts. The second time, the Library's Teen Librarian, Colleen Seisser and Youth Services Librarian Renee Grassi set up shop in the hallway near the cafeteria and later in the library, to demonstrate www.tutor.com, a free, live homework help service available to CJHS students through the Library.
The Deerfield library is located at 920 Waukegan Road, just north of Deerfield Road. If you don't live in Deerfield, the Library has reciprocal borrowing agreements with all neighboring libraries, including Chicago Public Libraries. CJHS looks forward to taking advantage of this great neighborhood resource! |

Religious Life
Yasher koach to Eliana Fisher, Daniel Eisenberg, Ari Eisenstadt, Rena Forester, Hannah Miller, and Benji Fleischacker for leading davening this week; also to Mrs. Eliaser for reading Torah.
A hearty thank you goes to Freethrows for Heroes, who came to tefillah to give a presentation on how their organization helps the families of US soldiers serving abroad. Not a dry eye was to be found in the house! Thanks to all the CJHS tigers who raised money for the organization last month. If you want to do your part to support our servicemen and women, you can bring in items for care packages that CJHS is collecting in partnership with the organization Soldiers' Angels. Bring in batteries, paperbacks, new magazines, stationery, and toiletries to our colelction point, and we will send them on to the distribution center to reach our lonely troops. For a complete list of high-need items, contact Jordy Shapiro, Jdshapkid@aol.com. |
