Youth United For Darfur
This past Sunday, STAND, an anti-genocide student coalition chapter at CJHS hosted a meeting for 20 representatives from high schools around the Chicago area. Along with Dr. Rebecca Schorsch (STANDʼs faculty advisor) and Karly Kupferburg who works at the Illinois Sudanese Community Center, student representatives from Deerfield, Highland Park, Niles North, Naperville North, St. Viator, Walter Payton, and nine other schools began to plan a high school student-run Darfur Rally in the spring. Ethan Barhydt, from Deerfield High School, ran the meeting, facilitating discussions about logistics, fundraising, speakers, themes, and student unity.
The rally will focus on the unity of students here with children in Chad and Darfur refugee camps. We will be fundraising for the ENOUGH project, and others like it, who are building schools for displaced children. We will be involved in a sister school program and hope to stream video from a school in Chad to the rally.
Save the date for a rally April 19, at 1 p.m. at the Federal Plaza in Chicago. Although the rally will be planned by students, all are welcome to come and we hope to have the whole CJHS community present.
Thank you to Dr. Schorsch, Noah Weinberg, and Benji Fleischacker who attended the meeting this past Sunday. Please email Noa Fleischacker at noadaphne@yahoo.com if you are interested in helping with planning or want more information or flyers!

Tiger Athletics: Week in Review
The Bowling Team's season came to an end on Tuesday as team members challenged the faculty and parents. Team members enjoyed displaying their bowling talents, while faculty and parents are now nursing muscles they never knew they had! With a record number of team members, numerous inter-scholastic contests, expert coaching, and delicious snacks, the season was a big success. The Swim Team kicked it into high gear with "four a week" practices in preparation for its meet next week. With the expert guidance of Coach Cohn and Coach Weiss, team members worked to shave seconds off their event times to win the upcoming full varsity meet. The Lady Tigers were undefeated this week with an impressive win Saturday over Cristo Rey and another "W" over Young Women's Leadership Academy on Tuesday. The team took a well-deserved break on Thursday by attending the Northwestern vs. Illinois women's basketball game as a team. The Men's Basketball team also had a great week. The junior varsity team continued its (almost) undefeated season as it outplayed a much larger St. Gregory team, while the varsity team defeated Roycemore on Sunday and nearly surprised league powerhouse St. Gregory. Congratulations to senior Victor Abecassis who scored 20 points and a triple-double against St. Gregory, and to sophomore Aaron Cohn who hit crucial three-pointers (12 points) in the same game. Athlete of the Week Congratulations go out to junior Jessica Rosenberg, our "Athlete of the Week." Jessica led the Lady Tigers to wins over Cristo Rey and Young Women's with very solid games at both ends of the court. In addition to scoring in double digits in both games, Jessica was also a defensive threat as she forced opponents into a number of turnovers. Jessica's performance was even more impressive since she had to leave last Thursday's game at Hinsdale Adventist with a serious injury. In addition to playing on the basketball team for three years, Jessica also runs cross-country and plays soccer. Next Week(s)... Swim Team at Lake Forest Academy at 5 PM Thursday... Lady Tigers at home vs. Ida Crown on Saturday night, vs. St. Martin de Porres at home on Monday, vs. Northtown Academy on Tuesday, at Highland Park on Thursday, and at Ida Crown next Saturday night... Men's Basketball at Northridge Prep on Saturday night, at IFS on Wednesday, vs. St. Martin de Porres at home on Thursday (varsity only), and vs. Yeshiva at home next Saturday night.... Etc...
Congratulations to Tiger Club (CJHS athletic booster club) members Mark and Sandy Levin and Lewis and Janet Steinberg, lucky winners of Mizrahi Grill gift cards in Tiger Club members drawing. Welcome back to junior Jeremy Hipps and his father Kirk from sunny Miami, where they ran the ING Miami Marathon. Jeremy represented CJHS and raised over $4,000 for Chai Lifeline. In the past two years, the CJHS community has raised over $10,000 for this organization that assists children with life-threatening illnesses. It's not too early to think spring (sports)! CJHS spring teams include men's tennis, women's soccer, women's badminton, and coed ultimate frisbee. Show your Tiger Spirit and order your own personalized spirit wear at the CJHS athletics website: http://www.highschoolsports.net. The on-line "Tiger Shop" offers hundreds of options and make great gifts. |

Five Questions For...
....Emily Pogrund and Victor Abecassis!
Senior Emily Pogrund is co-captain of the Lady Tigers basketball team and will play on the badminton team this spring. Senior Victor Abecassis plays on the men's basketball and tennis teams, and was named to the 2008 all-star team at the prestigious Yeshiva University Red Saracheck basketball tournament. You both transferred to CJHS in your sophomore year. What was this like? Vic: Transferring to CJHS was not as difficult as I had thought it would be. Everybody at CJHS is really open, so it wasn't hard meeting people, and since the school is so united, I soon knew almost everyone. The curriculum was a lot to handle but everyone from teachers to friends helped me through it, so it was all right. Emily: Transferring to CJHS was definitely an experience! I'm glad to be here, and I'd say it worked out for the best. How did playing on CJHS athletic teams help with this transition? Vic: Playing on the team as soon as I transferred helped make the transition a lot easier and a lot more fun than I thought second semester would be. I met some of my great friends from CJHS on the team, and without playing with them I would definitely have not been able to get as close to them. Emily: I have been playing basketball my whole life. Being able to play at CJHS put me back into my comfort zone and made it possible for me to get involved and keep in shape. What's your favorite memory or experience playing on a school team? Vic: My favorite memory is having a conversation with Mr. Cohen and my teammates at the Memphis basketball tournament about a certain type of "Western wear." Another favorite memory is from the YU Tournament, when we won off a buzzer beater 3 by Eisy to win the game and go to the championship. Well done, Eisy, you stud muffin! Emily: This year our team has really bonded, more than any of my previous years. We are able to have fun and joke around while also being able to focus on the game-- we even win now! I'd have to say a great part of my basketball experience is being able to look over at the stands during a game and see my grandfather, with his "Go Tigers!" t-shirt and grandmother with her bag of fresh cookies for the team. Why are sports an important part of the CJHS curriculum? Vic: The dual curriculum is a lot to handle, and without something to blow off steam you could go crazy. I wouldn't have been able to stay as calm if I wasn't on the team. It's also an indisputable excuse for leaving class early on game day! Emily: Sports are a great way to take your mind off of the stresses of high school. Also, without sports, nothing would motivate me to work out on a Sunday morning! Do you have any game day superstitions? Vic: I never take off my jewelry until tip off. I'll leave my necklace and wrist bands on right till tip off because they're good luck. Then I need to hand them to Mr. Gross to hold onto. It needs to be either Mr. Gross or Donna that holds my stuff. Donna's awesome. I also need to drink a monster and eat a snickers bar before big games. Emily: Our team went on a four-game losing streak at the beginning of the season and before all of those games we would put our hands in and on three say "win". At the fifth game we decided to change it up and say, "Go Tigers!" instead which led to a five game winning streak! Needless to say, we never said "win" again! What are your plans for next year? Vic: Next year I'll be going to Northwestern. I'm not entirely sure what I'll be studying but whether it's on the school team, practice team, or league play, I plan to be playing ball. Emily: As a senior, I have learned that there is no possible way to avoid that question. Therefore, I have learned to deal with it. As for my plans for next year, I plan to move on from CJHS, and continue to be ambiguous with my responses to that question. |
