Tigers Run for the Cause

Due to tremendous community support, junior Jeremy Hipps and his father Kirk have raised nearly $4,000 for Chai Lifeline by taking pledges to run in the ING Miami Marathon this weekend.  Over the past two years, CJHS has raised over $10,000 for Chai Lifeline through participation in this race.  We wish Jeremy and Kirk the best of luck in the race this weekend.

The bowling team has put their practice to good use in contests against teams from Vernon Hills on Tuesday and Regina Dominican on Thursday.  The team bowls against teachers and parents next Tuesday.  To participate, contact the coach, Dr. Gary Auslander, at drauslander@cjhs.org.

The swim team faced a seasoned Loyola Academy last Thursday in a dual meet and showed all of the progress it has made.  At this meet, CJHS swimmers achieved 12 record times.  The team continues to practice diligently in preparation for its February 5 meet at Lake Forest Academy.
athlete of the week

For her outstanding performance in the Loyola meet, sophomore Sarah Scheinman has been named "Athlete of the Week."  In her second year on the team, Sarah competed in a team-high six events.  Sarah loves to practice, and the harder the workout, the better.  According to Coach Lee Cohn, "Sarah likes to race anyone at any time, and is up to any challenge.  She will definitely be a future leader of this team."  Mazel tov to Sarah, and best of luck the rest of the season.

Not to be left out, the basketball teams resumed their game schedule with Lady Tiger and men's varsity wins at Waldorf on Wednesday.  On Thursday, the three teams traveled to Hinsdale Adventist for great games against this competitive school.  CJHS and Hinsdale Adventist teamed up together to raise over $1,000 for "Hoops to Troops," a program which supports the families of deployed soldiers.  The Lady Tigers face Cristo Rey on Jan. 24, Young Women's on Jan. 26, Roycemore on Jan. 28, and Ida Crown on Jan. 31, while the boys match up against Roycemore on Sunday, St. Gregory on Jan. 27, IFS on Jan. 28, and Northridge Prep on Jan. 31.  Come out and cheer for your Tigers!!

The women's badminton and soccer teams have begun mandatory conditioning for the spring season.  There is still time to participate in these exciting, fast-moving sports.  Due to CJHS's innovative "no cut" policy, any student in good standing can participate on a sports team of their choosing as long as he or she regularly attends practices and tries hard.  Contact Coach Gina Cohen at gina.cohen@kraft.com for soccer, or Coach Nancy Dorfman-Schwartz at nancyschwartz@jcfs.org  for badminton.

Have fun.  Play hard.  Go Tigers!

Udi Concert

This month's class meeting was greatly enhanced by the good people of Shorashim, who brought Israeli music artist Udi to perform after tefillah at CJHS.  Udi Krauss, a native of Jerusalem, has been a student of music since the age of 4.  After serving in the Nahal infantry brigade, Udi began his career as a professional musician and Israel educator.  In addition to working with musical greats such as Shalom Chanoch, Aviv Gefen and Hadag Nachash, he is now the drummer for Eric Berman, the winner of the top Israeli musician of 2007.

Udi performed on the guitar for the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes.  He commented on how pleased he was to be on tour in a community that knows Hebrew.  There was lots of laughter and joking around (in Hebrew) and great energy in song.

knesset

The CJHS class of '09 is touted by the Menachem Begin Center for its enthusiastic participation in the Junior Knesset program during our Senior Israel Experience.  This workshop forum allows students to gain some background knowledge on a single issue and go through the process of passing a law in the Knesset.  "The young people from Chicago were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the experiential workshop that allowed them to achieve knesset2an understanding of the Israeli political scene from the inside out," reports Ilana Brown of the Begin Center.  Seniors Aaron Weinberg and Jeremy Hulkower were also quoted in the article.

Elsewhere in the press, Daniel Bier ('06) continues to speak for Israel in the Ohio State student press.  Read his latest op-ed piece here.
