cookingGvt. Amit-Sharon's Hebrew IX class treated us to four more episodes of their daily cooking show, featuring new  מתכונים which amazed the class.

This week's featured guests were Rachel Braun and Hannah Rosenbaum, who assembled a seven-layer bean and avocado dip, Lea Sarris, whose impression of a German grandmother making chocolate lollipops and chocolate-covered pretzels entertained as well as fed, Leo "Moshe" Spornstarr, who made Waldorf salad, and Rachel Binstock, who braided homemade challah.

cookingAt the close of their brilliant program, Hebrew IX shouts out to our own CJHS Hebrew chef, alumnus Avram Pachter ('06), who is studying to be a chef at the cookingJerusalem Culinary Institute.  The adventures of "Wolfgang Pachter," as well as his photos and recipes, are chronicled in his "Live From Jerusalem" blog.
Arts Alive

Arts Alive, the second installment of CJHS' fine arts program, drew almost 200 parents and community members this past Sunday night when students showcased work from eight departments of their Fine, Performing and Literary Arts program. Highlights of the evening included improvisational drama skits, a Chanukah-themed jazz combo, student and teacher photography portfolios, and 1-minute commercials students created on film production software.

Visitors also had the opportunity to tour the school building, as each feature of the program was staged in another wing of the facility. Chanukah music performed by the student band welcomed patrons on the mezzanine level, which was followed by jazz music and choral music farther down the hall.

artsIn the Bet Knesset, students of drama performed an improvisational scene called "The Waiting Room." Upstairs, in the computer lab, student-generated commercials were blasting from a drop-down screen.  The evening concluded with a presentation from the student literary journal in the cafeteria, followed by a brief performance from modern dance students in the gymnasium.

arts
"The fact that every student was involved," says Bruce Scher, Academic Dean and Director of College Counseling, "points to the fact that the arts take on such a clear importance in the lives of our students ... some schools look at arts as an addition to the core curriculum. We view it as part of the core."

Choral Concert

The CJHS choir gave a concert of Rodgers and Hammerstein classics at the Gidwitz center during lunch on Thursday, December 11.  We look forward to further musical encounters between our students and our neighbors at Gidwitz!

Egg Drop

Students in Mrs. Eliaser's physics classes have spent the past month studying impulse and momentum, the controlling factors in collisions.  They have, since the beginning of the month, been developing designs to minimize the damage felt by a fragile object in a high-speed collision.  The egg drop project challenges them to design a container that will protect a raw egg in the 24-foot drop from the school's balcony.  Students explained to the onlookers that force felt in a collision depends most on impact speed and impact time.  "I am so excited that my egg made it!" kvelled junior Peri Axelrod.  "I worked so hard on this!"

Tiger Basketball

It's been a busy December for CJHS basketball teams.  Following junior varsity and varsity wins December 9  over a tough Hinsdale Adventist team, the varsity men's team left on Thursday for the Cooper Invitational tournament in Memphis.  The team was .500 for the tournament, with wins over Beren Hebrew Academy of Houston and Pittsburg's Hillel Academy.  Congratulations to senior Danny Silver for being named to the tournament all-star team.  In addition to the tournament, a real highlight for the team was a visit with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, where the team saw the Grizzlies practice, had a private tour of players' facilities, and met with the players.  The Tigers faced a seasoned Ida Crown team on Wednesday and lost two close games.  For scoring 14 points in just one half of play as his first time as a starter, junior Leo Spornstarr has been named the "Athlete of the Week."  According to Coach Shaoul, "Leo has made an immediate contribution to the team.  His work ethic and positive attitude have led to his being a key team member."

Not to be outdone by the boys, the Lady Tigers are on a four-game winning streak and were undefeated in December!  The team had wins over New Jerusalem, St. Martin de Porre, Hinsdale Adventist, and Universal.  Senior Emily Pogrund was the high scorer against Hinsdale Adventist with 18 points, while sophomore Alison Dreifuss was the high scorer against Universal with 20 points.  In February, the Lady Tigers travel to Baltimore as this team, too, will compete in a tournament/shabbaton.

Support Student Running for Chai Lifeline

Cafe Day

This Wednesday marked the opening event for CJHS' new cafe program.  Working with the chef and catering staff from Gidwitz, our caterer, students and staff were treated to a pay-as-you-go menu of options.  Response to Cafe Day was overwhelming, as dozens of people lined up to purchase lunch.  "This is awesome!" was heard at every turn.  "All this food for $1.00 an item?  I'd eat here every day!"

cafe
The full cafe program will begin in February.  Administrators explained to the crowd that a normal day's lunch will not, alas, include four entrees and six desserts, nor will the entrees be $1.00 apiece. However, if Wednesday's program is any indication, the new lunch program is poised for success.

Recruitment News

Forty-five families have taken advantage of the Early application deadline--almost twice as many as this time last year!  There is a lot of diversity among the applying students.  Many are musicians, athletes or artists.  All are interested in CJHS because of our reputation and promotion of Jewish values.  Of the 45 applications, 40% are from schools other than Schechter: Anshe Emet Day School, Akiba Schechter, public and other private schools.  We even have two applications from out-of-state, from families in New York and Georgia that are planning to relocate.

Applications are still being accepted for the 2009-2010 school year.  Visit our website, http://www.cjhs.org to download an application.
