One Million Dollar Gift to Name Athletic Wing and Field

GoodmansCJHS is thrilled to announce a $1 million gift from the Larry Goodman Family Foundation. In appreciation, CJHS will name its athletic wing and outdoor field in the Goodmans' honor. The Goodmans' gift is a remarkable expression of generosity, and it speaks to the fact that even now, in the midst of these challenging economic times, CJHS has earned the confidence of both its students and the greater community.

"Today, more than ever, we want to ensure the future and viability of Jewish education in Chicago," said Larry Goodman. "Lillian and I are committed to doing everything to guarantee their future and our Jewish future."  Read all about the Goodmans' gift at Crain's Chicago Business blog.

CJHS thanks the Goodmans for their generosity of spirit, their commitment to Jewish education, and most of all, their faith in our community.

Donating Online Just Got Easier

Have you ever planned to make a donation to an organization, but never bothered because of all the paperwork and hassle? Thanks to senior Jordana Abisdris, that's no longer a problem at CJHS. Abisdris's "Donate Now" button, designed as part of instructor David Rose's graphic design course, now sits proudly on the bottom left of CJHS's Web site. All a donation takes is a click and a ready credit card. Givers may specify between one-time and recurring payments, dedicate the gift in honor of an event or a loved one, and send the honoree a notification.

Abisdris's design was chosen because of its light and playful character. She was happy to contribute to CJHS, she says, because she loves it so much. "It's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else. You just don't get that anywhere else."

Abisdris will be pursuing photography in college. View her artwork--and make a donation!--at www.cjhs.org.

Shout Out for the Tiger Club!

Thanks to generous contributions from the Tiger Club (the CJHS athletics booster club) and CJHS families, our men's and women's basketball teams have been outfitted with sharp new uniforms and warm-ups.  Combined, the CJHS teams will compete in almost 100 basketball games throughout the area this season and will serve as very visible ambassadors for our school.

Speaking of the Tiger Club, the free basketball tee shirt promotion helped attract almost 50 members--a club record.  In an attempt to further increase this number, the Tiger Club will raffle two $25 gift certificates donated by the Mizrahi Grill at the Sunday, January 25 "Family Day" basketball games.  You must be a Tiger Club member to be eligible for the gift certificates to this delicious restaurant.  Click here to join the Tiger Club.

Have you seen the great new CJHS athletics website?  Go to www.highschoolsports.net and type "Chicagoland Jewish High School" where indicated.  This site provides team schedules and updates, game scores and statistics, team pages, photos and videos of our teams, and the "Tiger Shop" where fans can customize spirit wear.  When you log on to the site, make sure you register so that you can receive automated schedule updates for the teams of your choice.

Tiger Sharks Dive Into New Season
dive The Swim Team won seven out of nine events at its November 20 meet at Lake Forest Academy--an impressive showing for such a young team.  Team members train four days per week to prepare for an upcoming meet against Loyola Academy on January 15 and a re-match against Lake Forest Academy on February 5.  Come and support your team at these exciting meets!

swimTen-Pin Tigers Kick Off Year
The 17-member Bowling Team bowls twice weekly at the Brunswick Zone in Deerfield in preparation for interscholastic competition.  The team hosted an experienced Stevenson team on Thursday, and has upcoming contests against Deerfield, Vernon Hills, and Gordon Tech.  Both novice and more experienced team members have seen their averages improve over time. For his accomplishments as a two-year member of the Bowling Team, Matt Levin has been named "Athlete of the Week."

mattIn nominating Matt, coach Dr. Gary Auslander gives two reasons:  "First, on his improved ability which is directly related to his capacity and willingness to learn and change. I have had long talks with Matt about his mechanics... This year and particularly within the last couple of weeks there has been a dramatic turnaround. Matt asked me to go with him to buy a new ball. He also told me he was going to try out my suggestions, which he did. On the first day back after buying a new ball last Thursday, Matt bowled his highest average score of 139 with the new ball and the new approach. He is really looking good, and he is thrilled with the change and development."  Congratulations, Matt, and keep up the great work.

Men's Basketball
bballThe Men's Basketball Team is in its second week of competition and off to a great start.  The Junior Varsity team is undefeated, with wins over Yeshiva, St. Gregory, and New Jerusalem Baptist Church.  The Varsity team, which has had a very tough early schedule, had tough losses against Yeshiva, St. Gregory, and New Jerusalem, and a decisive win over Waldorf.  Wish the varsity squad "good luck" as the team travels to Memphis on Thursday to compete in the eight-team Cooper Yeshiva tournament. To listen live to all the tournament games and to view scores and stats via the Internet, log on at www.cooperinvitational.com.

Women's Basketball
bballThe Lady Tigers have had a very challenging schedule in the first three weeks of the season, but have improved every game.  With several tough losses to much larger schools, the women's basketball team had a decisive win over New Jerusalem on Tuesday.  The team has high expectations when it plays St. Martin de Porre and Hinsdale Adventist in the next week.
Chai Lifeline

cjhs.imageCJHS is thrilled to again support junior Jeremy Hipps as he runs for Chai Lifeline.  Stop by and sponsor Jeremy Hipps as he and his father, Kirk Hipps, run the ING Miami Half-Marathon on January 25, 2009 to raise money for Chai Lifeline. This wonderful international organization provides year-round emotional, social, and financial support to more than 3,000 children and their families every year. Chai Lifeline's goal is to bring joy to children and hope to their families, enabling them to live full and happy lives despite the presence of illness.  You can learn more at the Chai Lifeline website http://www.chailifeline.org/.

Jeremy is committed to raising at least $3,600 for Chai Lifeline. Please contribute by visiting Jeremy's personal Team Lifeline page.
Chemistry Show

chem show

On Tuesday, November 25, CJHS turned out for its first annual chemistry show.  Mrs. Ann Levinson and Mr. Ron Urick, assisted by the members of the AP Chemistry class, spent a merry forty minutes blowing things up and turning them bright colors for the viewing pleasure of the student body.  Student and faculty volunteers were invited up to guess at the physical and chemical chem showchanges about to occur; volunteers were chosen based on their ability to be calm under pressure, have steady hands, or in the case of Mr. Scher--who was splattered with acid-base indicator and hosed down with a fire extinguisher to remove the stains--a good sense of humor.  The demonstration concluded with a rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture with exploding hydrogen balloons, a perfect end to an exciting morning.

chem 3Many thanks to all the staff who assisted in logistics and setup, to Mrs. Levinson and Mr. Urick for all their hard work and creativity, and to Mr. Taylor for engineering the music.

Homecoming is Here!

Alumni Return

shaitigerMore than a dozen CJHS alumni stopped by to say hello on Wednesday November 26.  Members of the class of  2007 took their first tours of the Deerfield campus, having been in Israel during our opening year.  Five or six alumni came by for tefillah and offered words of wisdom to our current underclassmen, urging them to enjoy their time in high school and glean all that they can from the rich environment around them.

"I'm sure you're all sick of hearing this, but you are the ambassadors of the Jewish community," grinned one Yale freshman shamefacedly.  "Like it or not, it's true.  I'm one of two Jewish guys on my floor, and the others all come up to me and ask, 'What does Judaism say about this issue?'  I try to explain to them that Judaism embraces a lot of different perspectives and sects, and they're like, 'Yeah, we know, but what does Judaism say?'"

"I'm the only Jewish person that most of my friends know," another freshman at Southern Illinois pointed out.  "I get that same kind of thing all the time."

"Take advantage of close relationships with teachers," advised a Michigan sophomore.  "It won't be like this in college.  You'll be in lectures with two or three hundred people and the prof won't know who you are.  Take advantage of the teachers here who really care about you."

"Pay attention in Modern Jewish Thought," quipped a returning student.  "It's the most important thing you'll ever study.  And don't tell Rabbi Goldberg I said that!"

"The Hillel at my school doesn't have all that many people, so every person counts," noted another student.  "A few of us tried to put up a sukkah and the rabbi made me responsible for making sure that the sukkah was kosher.  Me!"  He paused for grins, acknowledging his lack of religious involvement in high school. "So of course, I facebooked [one of my CJHS friends] and had him quote me all the halachot and stuff."

"You will never have friends like this again," an Indiana freshman told the school.  "You'll have friends in college, and they'll be great friends, but not like these.  The people in my class... we're in touch constantly.  We see each other on campus, we see each other in Israel.  We're still here for each other even after we've all moved on.  And we always will be."
Pioneer Night

pioneersIn addition to our more recent alumni, CJHS welcomed back the pioneer entering class of 2001 along with their families, for a special dedication ceremony this past week.  The families who opened our school, the backbone of the class of 2005, returned to see the fruits of their labors. pioneerA special plaque has been erected to honor the "Nachshon class," those who stepped forward to enroll in a school that did not yet exist, so that others after them could enjoy a Conservative Jewish education in the Chicago area.

Darfur Movie Night

Although many people are aware that there is a genocide right now in Darfur, Sudan, few know the background and the urgent need to help the people there.  On Saturday night December 13, our very own STAND chapter will be hosting a movie night.  We're going to be showing the film The Devil Came on Horseback at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Eliana Fisher (Wilmette).  CJHS students may invite guests from other high schools as long as they RSVP.  This is a great oppurtunity to learn about the situation in Darfur as well as educate yourself on how to help the growing number of refugees.  Please contact Noa Fleischacker at noadaphne@yahoo.com to RSVP or if you have any questions.

Postcard and Stamp Drive
Jewish World Watch/STAND will soon be starting a letter-writing campaign to urge congressmen to help the people of Darfur.  The "letters" will be written on postcards; we will be asking the congressmen to support the African Union in helping the Darfur refugees, as well as pressuring China to stop supplying the Sudanese militias with arms.  Letter writing will begin after winter break, so we are going to start collecting postcards and stamps now.  Please bring to school any postcards and postcard stamps that you can spare to help kick off the campaign.  All postcards will be accepted, so don't worry too much about the picture on the front!

The Man in the Argyle Sweater Vest

On Monday, November 23, CJHS turned out in style to show our appreciation for the Man in the Argyle Sweater Vest.  Students and staff alike donned identical t-shirts emblazoned with a sweater vest and tie; some sported huge buttons proclaiming, "Argyle isn't for everyone, and neither am I!"  Mr. Bruce Scher, the well-beloved college counselor and dean of CJHS, whose endless good nature and inexhaustible collection of sweater vests have endeared him to all, was completely baffled at this apparently spontaneous outpouring of affection.
scher
Sponsors for this program were mysteriously elusive; neither the Bruce Scher Appreciation Society nor the Yellow Submarine Prank Monkey Committee claimed responsibility for the event.  An anonymous benefactor sponsored breakfast for "Argyle Day," and one unopened box of sweater-vest T's was found next to a stack of library books and a video about health, but otherwise the instigators remain cloaked in shadow.
