CJHS Observes Veterans' Day

Courage

CJHS commemorated Veterans Day on November 11, 2008, with a ceremony following tefillah. While Nina Kiken played the Telemann concerto in G major on the viola, Miranda Borkan, Alan Bukingolts, Jeremy Hulkower, Eden Noy and Ariel Stoltz shared some information about Veterans Day and quotes from famous Americans. Then the five students read the names, branch of the military, years served and relationship to our CJHS family of the many veterans' names so that we could honor their service. Following the reading of the names, Nina played Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suite, a perfect closure to a meaningful ceremony. Thanks to Myra Loris for her ideas and support.

CJHS Ambassador Training

cjhs.imageAt CJHS, our best ambassadors are our students, their families and our faculty. You are the ones who see and feel firsthand the magic that goes on within our walls and experience the unique culture that we have created. You, more than anyone, understand the importance of a Jewish high school in the developing identity of our teenagers.

One of our Board's and administration's key goals is to continue to broaden our exposure within the Chicagoland community.  To that end, we are very fortunate that Rob Mann has agreed to conduct a special ambassador training, entitled "Unlocking your Passion," on November 18 at 7:30 p.m. at CJHS.  Rob is Chair of the UJC National Campaign Training Department.  Since becoming a trainer in 2003, Rob has spoken or trained at over 40 Federations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Please join our Board of Directors in this unique opportunity to work together as partners to strengthen our school.  Rob is a dynamic speaker, and everyone will walk away learning new skills and with a renewed energy - both of which will be very valuable to us as we continue to work together to spread the word to new families and donors about the special place we have created at CJHS.

Please RSVP to Inez Altman, ialtman@cjhs.org, by November 17.
IFYC Wedding

wedding

Junior Sammy Simon and senior Sydni Cole graciously celebrated a mock wedding at the Interfaith Youth Core event on Thursday night.  Mock rabbi Elli Cohn officiated at the ceremony as she and the other guests explained the symbolism of the Jewish ritual and objects.  Our students also learned about Catholic and Muslim wedding traditions as students from Universal and Loyola Academy staged mock nuptials of their own.  Next week, CJHS will be hosting three students from each school as they experience a day in the life of a Jewish day school.

Come Build Our Garden - Rescheduled

gardenThe CJHS Garden Club dig-in has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 23.  Come between 10:00 and 5:00 and help the Garden Club build three raised gardens right outside the school.  No experience is needed, and it will be fun and rewarding!  We will be digging, raking, hammering, and shoveling so wear clothes you can get dirty.

The garden club still needs to borrow the following tools:
    Shovels
     Wheelbarrows
     Sledge Hammers
     Rakes
     Mattocks

If you have any of those tools and would be willing to lend them to the Garden Club for one weekend, please contact Ellie Honan, blondellie220@yahoo.com, or 952.217.7911.
