No Sleep At Darfur Sleep-In
On Saturday night, students, teachers and various speakers gathered at CJHS for the night to learn about the genocide occurring in Darfur. The evening began with a drumming circle led by Rabbi Menachem Cohen and other congregants from a drumming synagogue. Students heard from Rabbi Joshua Feigelson about the Jewish view on intervention according to the Mishnah and discussed the different levels of activism Jews are responsible for in daily life. Students went on "plan your own journey" as a refugee in Sudan, while others learned about African culture with Rabbi Barkan, watching his video of Ugandan people in their daily lives and hearing about his experience there.
A Sudanese refugee, Muhammed Abdul Rakman, spoke about the conflict and his personal experience in Sudan. Throughout the night, students made phone calls to the White House, wrote letters to representatives, made stuffed animals for refugees in Israel, and watched the movie Sand and Sorrow. The Sleep-In ended with a sunrise Shacharit and reflections on the evening. Students described the program as "invigorating and informative," all leaving with more power to make a difference.
The Darfur Sleep-In was covered by the Chicago Jewish News. Read the full story here.
Thank you to Noa Fleischacker and Jewish World Watch/STAND for planning this event and to all the teachers who came to help out. This event certifies the STAND chapter at CJHS. For more information about STAND visit their website at http://www.standnow.org/.

| CJHS Athletes Bring Home Trophy

The fall sports season came to a rainy conclusion on Tuesday. Following a clean-sweep win on Tuesday at Northtown Academy, the women's tennis team had a rainout Tuesday for their scheduled match at Vernon Hills. The team had a winning season, and everyone's level of play improved. The team says goodbye to seniors Donna Abisdris, Karen Avidar, and Jenna Corush. The men's golf team scored a "W" in its first tri-meet on Monday in Evanston. Led by meet low-scorer Brett Riederman, the team defeated teams from ETHS and Northridge Prep in a closely contested match. The good weather didn't hold out for Tuesday as the team's meet against Lake Forest Academy was rained out after only a couple of holes were played. This young and very promising team says goodbye to seniors Jack Dreifuss and Danny Silver.
Despite the continuous driving rain, the cross country team splashed through to take the trophy (and many individual medals and ribbons) from the famous Latin Invitational. In the very competitive Woman's Open division, the team of Elli Cohn, Ellie Honan, Nina Kiken, Naomi Michael, Aviva Schwartz, Rebecca Silverman, and Jacquie Zaluda took first place! In fact, the first three finishers in the race were CJHS runners! For demonstrating such determination in this come-from-behind win, these runners have been named the "Athletes of the Week." This young and talented team promises to be a threat at meets next year. The team says goodbye to seniors Yaakov Calamaro, Elli Cohn, and Ellie Honan.
Shout Out for Your Favorite Tiger!
Do you want to nominate a current CJHS athelete for "Athlete of the Week"? Simply complete a nomination form, available on the Athletics bulletin board, and submit it to Mr. Cohen.

Winter Sports - Register Today
There are many exciting additions to our sports programs this winter. This year, both our men's and women's varsity basketball teams will participate in a tournament/shabbaton: the boys travel to Memphis and the Lady Tigers play in Baltimore. Our coed swim teams and bowling teams will compete inter-scholastically and will see the return of the faculty challenge. The start of the winter athletic season is only a couple of weeks away. You must register for a winter sport by completing the registration form and paying the associated athletic fee by Friday, October 23. Then show up to the first scheduled practice! No student will be allowed to participate without first turning in the form, fee, and physical. As always, CJHS has a "no cut" policy: any student may participate on a CJHS athletic team as long as he or she regularly attends practices and contests and tries hard. We look forward to an enjoyable and successful winter sports season at CJHS. Please do not hesitate to contact me at tcohen@cjhs.org if you have any questions. |
Hop Through Highland Park
Each year, the Va'ad sponsors a progressive dinner which stretches through the sukkot of three CJHS families. This year, the Sukkah Hop will take place in Highland Park on Thursday night, October 16, as students will hop from Jonah Harris's sukkah to Jordy Shapiro's sukkah and finally to Avra and Aliza Shapiro's sukkah. Watch your future e-news for a report on this exciting annual event. |

Mr. and Ms. 2010 Go To Washington
We are pleased to announce that our entire junior class is participating in this year's trip to Washington, DC for Panim el Panim, an intensive four-day program that includes sessions with lawmakers and experiential educators, as well as a tour of the nation's capital. The seminar deals with Jewish perspectives on public policy, leadership, and Israel. Panim is an important element of CJHS's junior year curriculum because of its relevance to U.S. History, Jewish Communal Leadership, and other themes during the school year. Our students will be in DC November 16-19. Learn more at www.panim.org. |

Sign Up for Weekly Calendar Updates
Each day at CJHS is full of events--classes, club and committee meetings, athletic events, rehearsals, etc. CJHS uses Trumba, a calendar program that assembles all of this information into a unified, easily accessible structure; because the calendar is online, you can access it from virtually anywhere. The calendar's features include color-coding by event type, addresses and maps to events taking place outside the CJHS building, a search function, and much more. Use the Calendar Tips in the lefthand column to access the calendar. The Trumba calendar is updated on a daily basis, so be sure to check it regularly. To look at the calendar, click on www.trumba.com/calendars/cjhs. As in previous years, Trumba is capable of sending automated calendar updates to your email address. If you would like to receive these updates, please email cmusin@cjhs.org. The first automated email will be sent on Sunday. If you have questions about using the online calendar, please contact Ms. Musin at cmusin@cjhs.org or 847.423.5960. |
