King of Israel on Trial

Bagels, Bagels, Bagels! In the course of studying Samuel II, Ms. Novak's Neviim Rishonim class studied the very controversial incident of an Amalekite teenager boasting (untruthfully) to David that he had killed King Saul. In a swift move, David has this teenager killed on the spot. The students held a trial this week, Kingdom of Israel vs. David, to decide if David's actions were justified or not. The prosecution, led by Maor Gordon-Guterman, sought to prove that David's killing of an Amalekite teenager constituted first degree murder. Witnesses for the prosecution included Avner, Saul's general (Miriam Coven) and David himself (Aaron Freeman). Another prosecution witness, Saul's former arms bearer Aryeh (Jonah Frankel), gave important testimony, all the more remarkable since he was deceased! Max Geifman led the defense in an attempt to cast doubt on the Kingdom of Israel's case. Testimony from defense witnesses included King DavidSaul's grandchild Mephiboshet (Halyse Cole), David's wife Ahinoam (Jeff Budweg), and the Amalekite teenager's father, Aram (Rachel Aaronson). The defense also called David's servant (Sam Botbol), the one responsible for the actual killing. Testimony concluded with the calling of an expert witness for the defense, the Torah scholar Ralbag, a.k.a. Gersonides (Noah Chasin). The court is now weighing all the evidence and will decide David's fate in the coming week.

Photography Class Views Bresson

Students from Mrs. Snyder's black & white photography class travelled to the Art Instiute to view the  opening of the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibit. Cartier-Bresson is considered the father of street photography and is credited with the term "Decisive Moment" Photography. In that vein, students documented the trip in Cartier's style.

Cross Country
benjiThe beautiful weather this week provided the ideal environment for athletic contests.  The cross-country team returned to Lake Forest Academy for its challenging three-mile course, beating our Lake Forest rivals by one point! On average, runners improved their September 2 course times by 90 seconds.  Freshman Benji Fleischacker broke the CJHS course record by a full 46 seconds, a major feat.  Benji also broke the CJHS course record on September 9 at the Niles West Invite and is named the Athlete of the Week  this week.  According to Coach Cogan, reby "Benji is a hard-worker, enthusiastic about the sport, and his potential is unlimited."

Never one to be outdone, junior Rebecca Silverman finished fourth out of 50 runners at Lake Forest Academy and has consistently and dramatically improved each year and in each race.  This three-year team member has also been named CJHS Athlete of the Week.  "Rebecca is a true team leader who leads by example," said Coach Cogan.  The team runs its last race of the season, the infamous Latin Invitational, on October 7.

Women's Tennis
In its impressive wins over both Northtown Academy and ETHS, the Women's Tennis Team won 18 out of 19 matches played!  For this reason, the team as a whole has been named the CJHS "Athletes of the Week."  Team members are freshmen Rachel Aaronson and Lauren Steinberg; sophomores Leah Karchmer, Alison Dreifuss, and Sissa Abecassis; juniors Jamie Levin, Aliza Shapiro, and Chaya Moskovits; and seniors Karen Avidar, Jenna Corush, and Donna Abisdris.  The team plays at Northtown Academy on October 6 and at Vernon Hills on October 7 to end its season.

Men's Golf
The Men's Golf Team showed that a week of practice paid off, as the team defeated North Shore Country Day at Sportsman's Park on Monday.  While individual scores were not as high on Tuesday at the challenging Green Acres course, the golf team still played a great match against the visiting Vernon Hills team.    Junior Brett Riederman led the team in both matches.  The team has a tri-meet with ETHS and Northridge Prep on October 6 and hosts Lake Forest Academy on October 7 for its last match of the season.
