100+ Students Bond at All-School Shabbaton
The first All-School Shabbaton of the school year took place last weekend. More than 100 students joined with faculty and faculty families to relax, kick back, and relish Shabbat together. In preparation for the Shabbaton, students created a new setup in the Beit Knesset, rearranged the tables in the Shapiro Dining Hall, and spent a great deal of time transforming our usual school space into a Shabbat space. The event began with an extraordinary program brought to CJHS by Va'ad Israel. Friday night featured spirited tefillot and a delicious dinner, followed by a series of getting-to-know-you games designed to strengthen our community.

Va'ad Israel Presents Friends of Gilad Shalit
Va'ad Israel kicked off the Shabbaton with two speakers: Or Greenblum and Atara Barak. Atara Barak is the sister of Hanan Barak, Gilad Shalit's tank commander, who was killed during the attack in which Gilad was taken. Or Greenblum is a friend of Hanan Barak and as well a tank commander in that same unit. Or spoke of the day of the attack and the importance of the Israeli army while Atara shared her brother's emotional story and passed pictures of Hanan for the students to see. The event was a meaningful start to the Shabbaton. Singing in the Rain!
On Shabbat morning, the community came together for davening. While the rain poured outside, spirits were high inside as we sang numerous songs at the end of each Shabbat meal. The afternoon featured plenty of free time, a speedball tournament (yasher koach to the Blue team!), and an Arab-Israeli Dialogue simulation. Following mincha, Seudah Shlishit, and ma'ariv, everyone gathered in a large circle, with seniors in an inner circle, to recite Havdalah using the school's new havdalah set, a gift from the Class of 2008. The Shabbaton concluded with a mad dash around the building as students packed, cleaned, and reset the school in just over 20 minutes. Kol HaKavod to...
Yasher koach to the Shabbaton Committee for their extraordinary work in creating a Shabbaton only three weeks into the school year. In addition to the committee, nearly 30 more students were involved in planning or implementing various components of the Shabbaton--kol hakavod l'kulam. Many thanks to Mr. Frank, Rabbi Goldberg, Rabbi Barkan, Rabbi Dickman, Rabbi Ben-Avraham, Mrs. Eliaser, Mr. Guidone, and Ms. Musin for staffing the Shabbaton. Their monumental contributions to the experience cannot be expressed in words. Thank you to Gvt. Amit-Sharon, Gvt. Cohen, Mr. Marchenko, and Mrs. Smerling for their assistance on Friday afternoon. Thank you to Ms. Altman and Mr. Guidone for their phenomenal support of the program and willingness to make the seemingly impossible happen. Yasher koach to Ms. Musin for developing, guiding, and supervising the entire Shabbaton program. Mark your Calendars Now...

CJHS By Design: Susie Fishbein Delivers
On Wednesday afternoon, parents and community members Nina Harris, Karen Peaceman, Marci Shapiro, Tina Wolf, and Barbara Lieberman had the opportunity to cook and prep with Susie Fishbein, the famous kosher cookbook author. Susie shared techniques and shortcuts as the group cooked and tasted mouth-watering wonton chicken, tomato peasant soup and beggars' purses with runny chocolate. Also taking mental notes were guest tasters Tami Warshawsky, Katy Silvers, Maryl Dayan, Melanie Michael, Jennifer Flink, and Lori Rabinowitz. That evening, Susie did a cooking demo for over a hundred people in the Shapiro Dining Hall. Guests enjoyed learning how to make her version of a Rosh Hashanah dinner, while CJHS student waiters treated them to a sumptuous three-course meal cooked by CJE Senior Life.

| CJHS Athletes Persevere
What a beautiful week for fall sports! The Women's Tennis Team played away matches against experienced Highland Park and Stevenson teams, and on Thursday had its first home meet against Northridge Prep. The match play has contributed to both competitive team and individual play. Next week the team plays at Glenbrook North and Evanston Township High School.
Cross Country
For the first time ever, the cross country team competed in the Mather Invite at Chicago's Legion Park. The festive atmosphere and great course led many runners to say that this was their favorite race to date. Out of ten teams competing, the CJHS women placed third and the men's team placed fourth. In addition, 13 CJHS runners received medals for their individual performances. This is quite an accomplishment in this competitive, varsity-level competition. On Tuesday the team returns to Lake Forest Academy for its scenic three-mile race.
Men's Golf
The weekend's torrential rains played havoc with area golf courses and with the Men's Golf Team's schedule. The team wisely capitalized on the break in match play to work on their long and short games. The team faces North Shore Country Day at Sportsman's on Monday and plays Vernon Hills at Green Acres on Tuesday. Congratulations to novice sophomore golfer Jonah Harris who has been named the CJHS Athlete of the Week. According to Coach Tinberg, "Jonah has made tremendous improvement since we started. He has hit some good shots and has developed a pretty nice golf swing. He will continue to improve."

Tiger Club
The support for the Tiger Club, the CJHS athletic booster club, has been phenomenal this year, but we still need your help. The club's mission is to provide financial support and increased spirit for CJHS athletics. Show your Tiger Pride and join today!
