Bev Fox

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Beverly Fried Fox, wife of Sam, beloved mother of Deena, Tamar, and Renana (CJHS alumna), and a tremendous leader and teacher in our community, most recently on the senior administrative team at Sager Solomon Schechter Middle School.  The memorial service took place on Wednesday at Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah, in Wilmette.  Shiva is being observed at the Fox home; further details can be found in the new "Shiva Information" column on the left.

A Legacy of Life

Bev Fox touched the lives of many of our students and teachers.  She was a consummate storyteller, a teacher for whom all of life was one long teachable moment.  Her humor, warmth, and caring were all commemorated during CJHS's weekly Wednesday discussion session.  Everyone had a story to share, a moment of kindness, a memory of laughter.  "I got sent to the principal's office for walking out of class," one student recalled fondly. "But she didn't yell at me at all.  She told me a story about how someone died--drowned--because someone who was supposed to be there had walked away.  It scared the heck out of me, and I never did that again!"  Even students who never knew Mrs. Fox were touched by the outpouring of love from those who have known her the least.

"My mother is still with us," Renana Fox '06 told the community at the memorial service.  And as her stories circulate our halls, inspiring a new generation to live, love, and teach as she did, the legacy of Beverly Fried Fox will live on.

The Bev Fox Memorial Garden

Bagels, Bagels, Bagels!Gardening and Torah were two of Mrs. Fox's great passions. The students of CJHS have decided to dedicate a large flowerbed in the shape of a Jewish star in memory of Bev Fox, to keep her legacy alive and blooming in the upcoming CJHS school garden.

The Bev Fox Memorial Garden will be open to members of the community to come and plant in Mrs. Fox's memory.  $10.00 donations are being collected by Ellie Honan of the Garden Committee and Elli Cohn of the Chesed Committee.  The donations will go towards the purchase of spring flowers, and each donor will reserve a spot in the garden to plant in the spring.  The Garden Committee is scheduling a community-wide planting day in March. Stay tuned for further details, or email Elli Cohn for donation information.

CJHS By Design - An Evening With Susie Fishbein

Celebrate the New Year with our CJHS family and Susie Fishbein, author of the wildly successful Kosher by Design series of cookbooks.  Susie will give a three-course cooking demonstration at CJHS on Wednesday evening, September 17.  RSVP to Bobbie Wolk at rwolk@cjhs.org or call 847.324.3723. For more information, click here.

If you can't make the event, consider buying a cookbook!  Order Susie Fishbein's Kosher By Design Goes Light through CJHS, and a portion of each sale will go towards our school.  Order forms can be found here.

In addition to the public demonstration, five people will be treated to private cooking lessons with Susie from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. She will instruct you in special cooking techniques, and help prepare a separate three-course meal, which you will then get to enjoy.  Click here to place your bid in our online auction. The auction ends this Sunday, so bid today!

Junior Bridge Building Champions!

Phyx students

This week witnessed the sixth annual CJHS bridge building competition in Mrs. Eliaser's physics classes.  Twenty-three students put their knowledge of tension and compression to work as they sought to build the most efficient pasta bridge in the school.  This year featured an amazing selection of double-deck trusses, including Pratt and Howe trusses as well as original designs.

hall of fame This year's winners included juniors Talia Stoehr and Miranda Borkan, whose bridge held 61.8 times its own weight and survived a load so heavy that it shattered the loading bucket, and juniors Max Abecassis, Lizzie Spicehandler, and Davy Silver, whose bridge held 62.9 times its own weight!  This year marks the first time that more than two students have made it as far as the CJHS Bridge Hall of Fame for bridges supporting more than 60 times their own weight.

This year's junior champions are eligible to go on to Chicago regionals next year at IIT, following in the footsteps of senior champions Jack Dreifuss, Ellie Honan, Victor Abecassis, and Danny Silver, who are representing CJHS in the 2009 contest.

Carrots of Triumph

Mr. Taylor's biology class of last year brought in the "fruits" of their labor this week, specifically last May's seed project.  Aliza Small proudly shared the carrots that she grew from seeds, Jordy Shapiro raised a successful crop of tomatoes, and Alex Krule cultivated more plants than he could count.  Congratulations, green-thumbed sophomores!

QuarkNet Celebrates the LHC
Quarknet group
On Wednesday September 10, physicists all around the world celebrated the opening of the Large Hadron Collider--the world's largest particle accelerator--in Geneva, Switzerland.  Here at CJHS, QuarkNet, the CJHS particle physics team, kicked off a year of exciting research.  The hummus was flowing and the excitement was running high as the ten students started calibrating our own cosmic ray detector.  CJHS plans to form a consortium with Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South, studying cosmic rays and their effects on earth--just as soon as we finish tuning up the detector (shown above).

Model U. N. Meeting

On Monday, September 15 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the high school, there will be an informational meeting for students enrolled in Model United Nations, along with their parents.   This meeting will give important details about the format of the class and competitions.  It is our hope that the class will participate in a Model U.N. experience this year in New York.  Because the registration for this tournament will take place at the beginning of October, it is crucial for parents to be introduced to the format of the tournament and the costs incurred for students attending.  If you have any specific questions, please contact Ms. Myra Loris, the Model U. N. advisor, at mloris@cjhs.org.

CJHS Remembers September 11

Sept. 11"We can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.... We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom...."

  --Abraham Lincoln
Gettysburg, PA
1863

CJHS remembered 9-11 with a program following tefillah. It began with a DVD recording of the Gettysburg Address set on a backdrop of the events of 9-11. Miranda Borkan, Alan Bukingolts, Hannah Miller, Rebecca Silverman, and Eden Noy then read stories of both victims and survivors. The program ended with a recording by Sheva of Shir Lama'alot (Psalm 121). Thanks to Ms. Loris for providing the DVD and SeƱora Linda for planning the presentation.

Yasher koach to Elli Cohen, Lisa Wiznitzer, Ari Eisenstadt, Shoshana Coven, Ms. Musin, Matt Levin, Ellie Honan, and Louis Shekhtman for leading davening at CJHS this week; also to Sammy Simon and Jeremy Hulkower for reading Torah.

This week's dvar Torah featured the children's book And God Saw That It Was Good: A Story for Sukkot, by Beverly Fried Fox, read by Rabbi Barkan.  In this heartwarming tale, five families come together to build a sukkah.  Over twenty years, parents and children, hammers and nails, popcorn and papercuts, one hungry squirrel, and finally God himself all contribute something to make the holiday special.  The photos that lavishly illustrate the book chronicle the true story of the Morse Ave. sukkah in West Rogers Park.
