Mazal Tov to the CJHS Class of 2008/5768 |
On Wednesday, May 28, our building was filled with students, faculty, staff, family, friends and well-wishers from the community as we celebrated the accomplishments of the class of 2008. The theme for graduation was from Proverbs: Shma atah, v'ni, vachacham v'asher baderech libecha--Listen, my child, and become wise, and delight in the path of your own heart. This theme was in evidence throughout all the day's speeches and events.
Rabbi Goldberg began the morning's Siyum using a series of texts to explore the relationship between students and teachers. Dr. Raviv reunited the seniors with a "Letter from the Kotel" which each of them had written in Jerusalem some six months earlier during their Israel Experience. The letter was part of a program asking students to think "What would the Kotel ask of me, a 21st century Jewish young adult, had it had the ability to give me a note?". These highly personal and reflective letters were sealed in envelopes and kept at CJHS until graduation. Finally, faculty and staff took great delight in sharing personal stories, and discussing the many accomplishments of each of our graduating seniors.
The graduation ceremony featured several speakers, including Lynn Wiznitzer, Rabbi Goldberg and Dr. Schaffner. Seth Berkman, Vanessa Youshaei, Ronni Binah, Daniel Kanter, and Lilli Flink spoke on behalf of their class. Rose Kiken and Jacob Stoehr served as Class Marshals, and Rabbi Barkan and Avram Coven blew the shofar. The CJHS A Cappella choir performed, and Richard Kahn and Noa Fleischacker played the Processional and Recessional. In presenting the class gift, Daniel Kanter said, "We decided to give the school its very own Havdalah set. Just as the act of Havdalah symbolizes the transition from week to week, let this Havdalah set show the transition between our class and the next. We hope you can use this at every CJHS Shabbaton, and many other events that take place for years to come."
Heartfelt thanks to all who worked so hard to make this graduation so special: Ms. Inez Altman, Sra. Deborah Brejcha, Mrs. Sharon Chefitz, Sra. Claudia Linda, Mrs. Michele Agbodza, Ms. Dori Robinson, Mrs. Gail Gottlieb, Mr. Bruce Scher, Mr. Dale Griffith, Mrs. Martha Keefe, Ms. Doris Menk, Ms. Maria Pani, Mr. Alex Kosarev, Mr. Igor Burda, and Mr. Jim Guidone.
We are pleased to share some of the joyous moments and statements from graduation below.

Today it is clear that the answer to the question "who am I?" has come to include everyone on this stage. Somewhere between the differential equations and in -class essays, between Morton Grove (zichrono livracha) and Deerfield, between late night phone calls and bowling alleys, we became a family.
-Seth Berkman
Our address has changed and our physical environment enhanced, yet our mission to create a culture of academic excellence that inspires our students to think critically and achieve their full potential remains the same. This important task, which happens each and every day within our walls, is far more impressive and inspirational than the most magnificent of buildings.
-Rabbi Goldberg
As these students prepare for the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, I am confident that they do so armed with the positive experiences and values instilled in them in their homes and at CJHS and that they will excel in the "common-ness" of our heritage. -Lynn Wiznitzer
It has been quite an exciting experience to spend more than half of my life with the majority of the students who are graduating with me tonight. We've been through it all-Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, piano recitals, plays, basketball games, USY conventions, Israel and of course studying and doing homework together-and I can tell you that each of us has our individual talents, but commitment is our common thread. Our commitment to excellent education and Judaism; our commitment to the outside world; and our commitment to one another.
-Vanessa Youshaei
Through participation in the various va'adot in the school-such as Va'ad Tikkun Olam and Va'ad Israel-we discovered our abilities to contribute to a community through our responsibilities as Jews and as human beings, and out of respect to our surroundings. We learned to have our voices heard and internalized our special connection to the Jewish community and the State of Israel, as evidenced by the fact that a number of the graduates will be spending the coming year on programs in Israel. -Ronni Binah
Our dual curriculum is challenging, but challenging with a purpose. While here you have learned Torah. Indeed you have studied Torah with a capital T as well as torah with a small t. By the latter I mean all of the texts of the Jewish people - Talmud, works of great Jewish thinkers and philosophers, and others. This study has not only connected you with the long and rich heritage of our people; you have also acquired the critical thinking skills that, in combination with your reverence and love of Torah will enable you to continue your study.
-Dr. Ted Schaffner We anticipate the many homecomings and gatherings of this family that we have created. Because wherever we go, we will always remember the legacies of the class of 2008.
I would like to leave you with the wise words of Dr. Seuss: "today is our day. We're off to Great Places! We're off and away! We have brains in our heads. We have feet in our shoes. We can steer ourselves any direction we choose." With our brains and our feet, I have no doubt that we accomplish great things.
