Shabbat Shalom,

CJHS Observes Modern Holidays

In the weeks that follow Pesach, the Jewish community observes three modern holidays that mark tragedy and joy over the last seventy years of our history. At CJHS, these days are marked with solemnity and importance, and in the case of Yom Haatzmaut, with joyous celebration.

Yom HaShoah

Our community paused after Tefillah on Thursday, May 1, to remember the atrocities of the Holocaust. Josh Warshawsky, Jamie Levin, Matt Levin, Sophie Massey, Alex Krule, Jacquie Zaluda and Rebecca Silverman participated in a presentation that was adapted from Yad Vashem and focused on diaries from children who perished in the Holocaust.

Our freshman and sophomore classes heard from Julie Kohner, daughter of a Holocaust survivor. Her program, "Voices of the Generation," chronicles her parents' story, thereby personalizing the number 6,000,000. Ms. Kohner engaged our students, and many of them spoke about their own grandparents' struggle as well.

"It was interesting to learn about a love story that emerged from the Holocaust" said sophomore Eli Mogul. Many of our faculty were also moved by the presentation.

"I have just returned from Amsterdam where I visited the Anne Frank Museum and the Resistance Museum, so the Holocaust was very much on my mind," said Spanish teacher Sra. Brejcha. "It was particularly moving to meet the daughter of a survivor and hear her parents' story. It is so important for everyone to be reminded of the horror of the Holocaust, and hearing a personal story puts human faces on those who survived and those who did not."

Yasher koach to Rabbi Fryer Bodzin for organizing both programs.

Yom Hazikaron

This Yom Hazikaron, Va'ad Israel planned a program to remember Michael Levin, an American Jewish soldier, who was killed in the Lebanon War in the summer of 2006. Following tefillah on May 7, the entire student body viewed A Hero in Heaven, a film about Michael's life and commitment to Israel. From the film, students learned about Michael's journey from being a regular American teenager to a soldier in the IDF. During Gvt. Moskovich's advanced Hebrew class, Mr. Avraham Dviri, father of Yonaton Dviri, a fallen soldier, shared his son's story as well as what he has done to commemorate his son's life.

"Hearing the stories of Yonaton Dviri and Michael Levin made me realize that every Jew can find a way to connect to Israel, no matter where they are in the world," said junior Karen Avidar.

Yom Haatzmaut
As always, CJHS presented a fantastic Yom
yom haatzmaut shirt
Haatzmaut experience to the entire school community. Because of the significance of Israel at 60, more than half of the school day was devoted to celebration. The full details of CJHS's Yom Haatzmaut experiential education program were described in Part I of this week's two-part E-News.
LISHMA Hosts Lecture With Biblical Scholar

LISHMA at CJHS hosted Professor Ben Sommer, a renowned Bible scholar, as its last lecturer for the 2007-2008 academic year. Professor Sommer is concluding his term as director of the Crown Family Center for Jewish Life at Northwestern University to assume a Bible Professorship at JTS in New York. Professor Sommer discussed Psalm 29 and unpacked its past and present meanings through contextualized analysis. Psalm 29, Sommer suggested, "is an ancient text that demonstrates a fascinating relationship between Jews on earth and the angelic cohort in heaven; a union in faith and practice which brings both dimensions together in an act of praise and worship." After his lecture, Professor Sommer met with a couple of CJHS seniors who will enter JTS as freshmen next year.

Community members shared their enthusiasm about the level of scholarship and teaching throughout all of the LISHMA at CJHS sessions. The school wishes to thank all our partners in vision, staff members, speakers, and the many who volunteered to make LISHMA at CJHS so successful; we are already hard at work to bring our community dynamic and thought-provoking presenters for 2008-2009.
Third Annual Spring Sports Banquet a Triumph

More than 150 people packed the cafeteria on Wednesday night for the school's annual sports banquet. Each spring, student-athletes, family members, faculty, and friends gather to celebrate students' athletic achievements and to look forward to the coming year.

Men's basketball head Coach Saul Shaoul presented junior Victor Abecassis with a plaque for being named to the Yeshiva University Red Sarachek Tournament All-Star Team, while Mr. Gross presented the men's basketball team with the Metro Prep League sportsmanship award.

Each year, CJHS honors three young men and women for athletic achievement in three special areas. The students each receive individual plaques, and their names are also engraved on the plaques that are hanging in the athletic wing.

bday1

The following student-athletes were recognized for their achievements this year:

  • Ben-Zoma (Best Attitude) Award: Rachel Binstock and Jeremy Hipps
  • Miriam (Leadership) Award: Elli Cohn and Michael Brunwasser
  • Rabbi Akiva (Diligence) Award: Rebecca Silverman and Daniel Eisenberg.
Snapshots a Great Success

Snapshots, the student-directed one-act production, took place in front of an attentive audience in the Beit Knesset on Monday, May 12. Donna Abisdris, Joel Pachefsky, David Israel, and Karen Avidar directed plays in which students bday1explored a variety of performance styles. Topics included mistaken identity, sibling relationships, resistance to change, embracing higher education, an audition to be Huck Finn, and getting one date just right.

Several students also performed in a movement piece about the difficulties young women face with appearance and self-esteem. The performance culminated with The Last Flower by James Thurber, directed by Lisa Wiznitzer in Story Theatre style. This evening of student-directed plays was under the supervision of Ms. Dori Robinson.

Students Complete AP Exams

More than 40 CJHS seniors and juniors have completed Advanced Placement exams in subject areas ranging from Spanish to Calculus to Music Theory to Microeconomics. Colleges use results of these exams to award college credit for coursework completed in high school. Many seniors already earned top scores in exams completed last year.

Cinco de Mayo

The first-year Spanish class celebrated Cinco de Mayo last week on the CJHS Patio. A piņata filled with candy "stolen" from Mr. Taylor's stash of snacks was hung on a flowering tree, and the music of the Gypsy Kings added to the festive atmosphere. Of course, there was a lot of typical (kosher) Mexican food: Dunkin' donuts, microwave quesadillas, guacamole, salsa, chips, cookies, and to drink, agua de pina (pineapple juice). After celebrating and eating for fifteen minutes, back to reality: the class resumed. After all, the Mexicans won that battle but lost the war (i.e., against the French).

Studio Art Class Weighs In On the Environment

As an Earth Day project, Mrs. Snyder's Studio Art class has found something useful to do with all those plastic detergent jugs; they have designed personalized hand weights. Freshman Jessica bday1Rubens says, "This project is a healthy way to show creativity. With the urge to go healthy, why shouldn't we do it in a fun and stylish way? My individual weights show my love for nature." The students will fill their weights with water and learn a workout routine.

Their weights will be on exhibit from May 20 through May 23 at Just Be Fit, a training facility located at 420 Lake Cook Road in Deerfield. The students will bday1have an opening reception for "Just My Weights" on Tuesday, May 20 from noon until 1:00 p.m. Parents and faculty are encouraged to come.
A Cappella Featured at JUF's Walk With Israel

The CJHS A Cappella group sang Hatikvah and The Star Spangled Banner at the opening ceremonies of the JUF's Walk With Israel on Sunday, May 4 at McCormick Place. The thirteen students in the a cappella group (Seth Berkman, Rachel Binstock, bday1Dafna Broekman, Ariel Ferri, Lilli Flink, Richard Kahn, Nina Kiken, Rosie Kiken, Gabriella Meltzer, Natalie Salzman, Avra Shapiro, Josh Warshawsky, and Lisa Wiznitzer) all wore the fabulous CJHS Israel at 60 shirt designed by our art teacher, Mrs. Snyder.

bday1Gabriella Meltzer was our soloist for The Star Spangled Banner. Thank you to the a cappella group for bringing such honor to the entire CJHS family.
Senior Qualifies Again for Chemistry Camp

Yasher koach to Ari Frankel (and Mrs. Levinson, his chemistry teacher), who was once again named among the top 20 chemistry students in the nation, qualifying him to attend the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad study camp at the Air Force Academy in Colorado this June. Ari is one of only two students from the Chicago area selected for this honor. Following the study camp, four of the twenty students will be chosen to attend the International USNCO competition in Budapest, Hungary. Good luck, Ari!

Education Committee Member Wins AVI CHAI Fellowship

Congratulations to Dr. Betsy Dolgin Katz, a member of CJHS's Education Committee, for being one of the first recipients of The AVI CHAI Fellowship. The AVI CHAI Fellowship is unique and constitutes the largest cash award to emerging communal and educational leaders within the North American Jewish community.  The recipients of The AVI CHAI Fellowship were selected from an initial pool of more than 40 nominations that were submitted by 20 nominators (18 located in the United States and two in Israel).

"The AVI CHAI Fellowship is intended to be a vehicle for investing in people with vision, creativity, courage, savvy and stamina to try new things, to think outside the conventional boxes or inside them in new ways, and to see opportunities where others see obstacles," explains Arthur Fried, AVI CHAI's Chairman.  Each of the AVI CHAI Fellows has demonstrated a track record of commitment towards these ends, and although the award -- $75,000 per fellow or team per year -- will go towards their proposed activities, the purpose of The AVI CHAI Fellowship is to advance and promote the individual winners as important forces in building a vital American Jewish future built upon these values.
CJHS Well-Represented in CHUSY Region Leadership

About a month ago, almost 200 teens from the Chicagoland area and Wisconsin gathered in Waukesha, Wisconsin for CHUSY Region's 57th annual Kinnus. The USYers spent the weekend trying to find their own Stairway to Heaven, the weekend's theme. Everyone left having enjoyed the amazing convention and enthusiastic for the next USY year to begin.

CJHS was lucky enough to be represented by a large amount of delegates from many area synagogues, as well as the four people who planned the convention: co-chairs Seth Berkman and Richard Kahn, Executive/Israel Affairs VP Josh Warshawsky, and President Jacob Stoehr. In addition to being planned by four CJHS seniors, the outgoing and incoming Regional Boards are well represented with CJHS students. In addition, members of our faculty-Rabbi Goldberg and Rabbi Fryer Bodzin-went to Kinnus and taught during various programs.
