Reflections on the YU Basketball Tournament
The CJHS Men's Basketball Team proudly represented our community at the 17th Annual Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament at Yeshiva University, bringing home a second place championship trophy from our division. Here are a few reflections on the experience from Academic Dean Mr. Bruce Scher, who accompanied the team, and CJHS senior and team member Jeremy Frankenthal.
From Mr. Scher: "Along with playing outstanding basketball, our students had the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat with over 350 athletes, coaches, sponsors, and staff. Throughout the tournament, our team was part of a community that recognizes the importance of prayer, the inherent pride we have in ourselves as Jews, the groundwork of sportsmanship, and the value of integrity, both when winning and losing.
Yasher Koach to coaches Saul Shaoul and Stu Shyman for being incredible role models both on the court and throughout the trip. Our team 'groupie,' CJHS parent Lee Cohn, was there from the first game through our championship game. He was also instrumental in arranging for our students to visit the New York Stock Exchange. Athletic Director Mr. Tim Cohen was connected to our team either by phone or by masclive.com all week. Many thanks to the parents who attended the games; the alumni who made their way to NY; CJHS sophomore Matt Levin, who came complete with computer and program to keep stats; and the entire CJHS community for their long-distance support."
From Jeremy Frankenthal: "Our time in New York was amazing. Not only did we enjoy playing great games of basketball, but we also bonded as a team and enjoyed some great sights. Our first game against Akiva from Detroit was an amazing win in which all players saw the floor and every player on the team SCORED. Unfortunately, the second game was a loss; we played a very good team, Torah Academy of Bergen County, on their home court where they had a large fan base. In our third game, we pulled away in the clutch with an amazing 3-pointer by Daniel Eisenberg to win the game with less then 10 seconds to play. In our final game, we unfortunately lost to Weinbaum Yeshiva of Boca Raton, Florida. Through it all, we played with passion, fought hard, and took second place in Tier III with pride.
None of this could have happened without the hard work and devotion of Mr. and Mrs. Scher and our coaches Saul Shaoul and Stu Shyman, as well as the parents, family members, and friends who came out to support us." |
Lishma at CJHS Continues April 9
For years, parents and visitors to CJHS have voiced their desire to experience what it is like to sit in a classroom with a member of our extraordinary faculty. We have another exceptional opportunity to do just that on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. The third session of Lishma at CJHS features Dale Griffith, English Department Chair at CJHS. Dale is one of the most respected members of our faculty. He will be speaking about the quest for faith in modern secular literature.
The lecture and discussion will explore man's search for faith as a subtext in several pieces of modern, secular literature. Says Dale, "We will first note how particular theological perspectives can be brought to bear upon the intent of the literary artist. Turning to the substance of the literary works under investigation, we will first look at several portraits of what may be deemed as 'bad faith.' Finally, we will listen to the voices that challenge that bad faith. The writers that we will consult include Annie Dillard, James Joyce, Wallace Stevens, Leo Tolstoy, John Updike, Saul Bellow, Graham Greene, Simone Weil, T.S. Elliott, W.H. Auden, and Albert Camus."
Mr. Griffith is the recipient of the University of Chicago Outstanding Teacher Award more than a dozen times. He earned a B.A. in English at the University of Texas and a Masters of Divinity in History of Religions and a Master of Arts in English at the University of Chicago. He taught and chaired the English Department at Barrington High School for three years, where he was featured as one of 36 outstanding teachers of writing by the Council of Teachers.
Please join us for this wonderful learning opportunity. To register, call Bobbie Wolk at 847.324.3723 or email lishma@cjhs.org. And pass this on to your friends, family and colleagues. This is a session for all backgrounds and faiths to experience together. |
Volunteers Needed for Maot Chitim
Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago prepares packages for members of our Jewish community who cannot spare the expenses of Passover food. Last year, almost 5,000 food packages were delivered to needy families, and an estimated 24,000 people benefited. We invite all who are able to pack Maot Chitim on Monday, April 7 as part of a CJHS delegation. Packing will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Maot Chitim warehouse, located at 8220 N. Austin in Morton Grove.
If you are not available to volunteer that day, there are many other ways to help Maot Chitim accomplish its mission. For more packing dates, delivery dates, or donation information, please click here.
This is not only an important mitzvah - it is a rewarding experience because packers leave knowing that they have enabled others to fulfill the mitzvot of Passover.
If you want to sign up or have questions, contact Rachel Binstock. If you plan to represent CJHS on Monday, April 7, please RSVP to her as soon as possible. |
