CJHS Celebrates Purim
Like the snow that fell on March 21, Purim 2008/5768 has come and gone. Our entire community, students and staff alike, transformed ourselves into bumble bees, Spice Girls, scuba divers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Starbucks cups, Pink Ladies, cowboys and so much more to celebrate Purim. The Purim Committee, led by Rabbi Fryer Bodzin, ensured that not a single detail was overlooked. Tefillah on Purim morning was absolutely festive. Yasher koach to Seth Berkman for finding daveners who led our prayers in creative and humorous tunes. Yasher koach to Yael Schwartz for reading Torah and to Jeremy Hulkower for finding our Megillah readers: David Weltman, Mr. Pomeranz, Mrs. Eliaser, Avi Coven, Mrs. Novak, Noa Fleischacker, Ilana Lupovitch, and Richard Kahn.
Isaac Simon delivered a fascinating D'var Torah. Many guests of all ages joined us to hear the Megillah, including our Kiryat Gat visitors and alum Zach Berkman.

Following tefillah, our community moved to the cafeteria for a seudah (festive meal) that included hamantashen, french toast, bagels, and frittata. Ms. Altman created our international menu in conjunction with the Purim Committee. At the Seudah, Yali Derman, who headed our costume competition along with Aliza Small, awarded prizes for the best male and female costumes to students in each grade, our Israeli guests, and faculty.
As always, our spiels represented CJHS culture. The seniors, juniors, and staff gently poked fun at our own community. Our newest teacher, Mr. Landau, made everyone laugh with his portrayal of Dr. Schaffner as a terrifying Darth Vader. Yasher koach to Jacob Rabinowitz for being a fantastic emcee and editor of the spiels.
The plan was to send our students and staff into the community to work with agencies that deal with homelessness and hunger, in the spirit of Matanot La'evyonim, one of the four mitzvot associated with Purim. Unfortunately, the falling snow thwarted the plan. Four people deserve to be recognized for the outstanding work they did to ensure that the afternoon would go off without a hitch. (Unfortunately, they couldn't overcome the "hitch" of a late-March blizzard!) Students Rachel Binstock and Matt Levin placed our student body into nine groups and created bus routes for each. Ms. Musin worked along with Rachel and Matt, while Rabbi Barkan secured the service project sites. We were fortunate to hear from Joel Williams from Lake County Community Development, who spoke about the Continuum of Care.
At 12:30 our students departed for home, excited for Shabbat and looking forward to the Purim dance the next night. |
|
Dressed in outfits that reflected the fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties, 100 students attended last Saturday night's Purim dance at CJHS. As the school has always had a "hallway culture," the Va'ad chose to hold the dance in the second floor hallway between the library and the fine arts wing, decorating the space with streamers and posters that depicted soda fountains, jukeboxes, and disco fever. Yasher koach to the Va'ad for planning a wonderful event. Thank you to Rabbi Goldberg, Mr. Gross, Ms. Rostker, Dr. Raviv, Ms. Gitlin, and Ms. Musin for chaperoning the dance. |
Mishloach Manot Drive Reaches New Heights
The annual Mishloach Manot Drive was a huge success. Nearly 70 families participated in the drive, and every family in the CJHS community received a bright bag full of tasty treats. Many thanks to Jewel-Osco for donating 36 dozen kosher hamentaschen for the drive. Thanks also to the students who helped pack mishloach manot and to the Va'ad for covering the cost of the mishloach manot, enabling 100% of proceeds to go to Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger. This year, we collected $7,456, a 23% increase over last year's drive! |

Israeli Students Visit CJHS
As part of the Partnership 2000 program, 14 juniors and three educators from Kiryat Gat, Chicago's "sister city" in Israel, visited CJHS last week. In the past, CJHS seniors have visited Kiryat Gat as a part of their Senior Israel Experience. The addition of a Chicago visit is a part of a deepening relationship between CJHS and our friends in Kiryat Gat. During the week in Chicago, our guests toured the city with the P2K staff, experienced a day as North American Jewish day school students, participated in CJHS's Purim festivities, and visited our neighbors at CJE Senior Life.

CJHS thanks the families who generously opened up their homes to our guests - your hospitality enhanced the visit. Thanks to the Auslander, Avidar, Bier, Calamaro, Coven, Ferri, Frankenthal, Forester, Kamin, Miller, Noy, Stoehr, and Zaluda families for hosting. Thanks also to Brooke Leviton and Elissa Polan from JUF for their role in establishing and maintaining our relationship with the Kiryat Gat community. |

IFYC Event
The IFYC (Interfaith Youth Corps) event at the Universal School in Bridgeview was a great success, with an excellent turnout from CJHS, Loyola Academy, and Universal. Students discussed the positive and negative stereotypes of the Jewish, Islamic, and Christian faiths. Thanks to Vanessa Youshaei, Esther Bier, Naseem Parsa, Jeremy Hipps, and David Weltman for attending and to Rabbi Barkan and Ms. Bier for helping with the logistical details. Information regarding the next IFYC event will be coming soon. |

Volunteers Needed for Maot Chitim
Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago prepares packages for members of our Jewish community who cannot spare the expenses of Passover food. Last year, almost 5,000 food packages were delivered to needy families, and an estimated 24,000 people benefited. We invite all who are able to pack Maot Chitim on Monday, April 7 as part of a CJHS delegation. Packing will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Maot Chitim warehouse, located at 8220 N. Austin in Morton Grove.
If you are not available to volunteer that day, there are many other ways to help Maot Chitim accomplish its mission. For more packing dates, delivery dates, or donation information, please click here.
This is not only an important mitzvah - it is a rewarding experience because packers leave knowing that they have enabled others to fulfill the mitzvot of Passover.
If you want to signup or ask questions, contact Rachel Binstock. If you plan to represent CJHS on Monday, April 7, please RSVP to her by Friday, March 28. |
