Spring Musical Wins the Strike, Hearts of Audiences
After weeks of rehearsals, a cast of 25 CJHS thespians and dancers, accompanied by a 10-member pit orchestra, dazzled audiences with their energetic performance of the Adler and Ross musical The Pajama Game. More than 600 people attended the performances, held on March 16 and 17 at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (otherwise known as the Chicagoland Jewish High School gymnasium).
This marked the first time a musical production has been held in our new home. The audience arrived to a black box theatre where pajamas and fabric hung, along with a beautiful backdrop painted by the stage crew and by art teacher Ms. Marla Snyder. Several of the play's characters greeted audience members, and then the factory bell rang.
We look forward to seeing you at the next CJHS production, Snapshots, on May 12.

Chemistry Students Hear First-Hand Accounts of Chernobyl Disaster
This week, CJHS Mathematics Department Chair Ms. Marina Gitlin and CJHS Maintenance Engineer Mr. Alex Kosarev were guest speakers in Mr. Urick's chemistry class. The class was finishing its "nuclear chemistry" unit, which included a study of the April, 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Both Ms. Gitlin and Mr. Kosarov lived in the former Soviet Union at the time of the disaster, and each offered a fascinating first-hand account of the experience. Ms. Gitlin, then a young girl living in Minsk, spoke about her exposure to some of the radioactive fallout that resulted from the accident. Mr. Kosarev, a meteorologist in the former Soviet Union, talked about his experience helping fly on missions to seed clouds that would release airborne radioactive material so that it could precipitate into isolated zones away from rivers, and avoid spreading into the ocean environment. |
Va'Ad Israel Cook-Off a Great Success
Last Wednesday, 40 teachers and students came together in the CJHS cafeteria for a Va'ad Israel -sponsored Israeli cook-off.

Eight different dishes - a sumptuous three-course meal - were made and happily consumed, and everyone left with full stomachs. The event was such a great success that it will undoubtedly become a yearly CJHS tradition.
Thanks to Lilli Flink, Karen Avidar, Ronni Binah, and Shai Kamin for planning the event; to Gvt. Moskovich for coordinating the entire evening; to Mrs. Oly Avidar for assisting; and to the Kamin family for donating food. Congratulations to Va'ad Israel for organizing such a great evening.
