CJHS Presents The Pajama Game
CJHS is exploring space this year. For the first time within the walls of our new campus - designed for learning, Jewish practice, exploration, and inspiration - we will proudly host the annual spring musical.
This will be the second time this year that CJHS's Fine, Performing, and Literary Arts program has exposed students to the phenomenon of site-specific performance -first during our Fine Arts Night in December, and now with The Pajama Game. This performance style, which allows performers to interact with the performance site, has grown in popularity over the past several years; the opportunity to work in non-traditional theatre spaces gives choreographers and theatre practitioners more room for invention. Site-specific performances add another dimension to the audience experience; rather than walking into the expected theatre space, the audience walks directly into the play's actual setting. The experience is heightened, the audience more connected to the action of the play.
When you arrive for the performances of The Pajama Game on Sunday and Monday nights at 7:00 p.m., you will be transported to the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. Our talented students have been rehearsing for six weeks in preparation for these groundbreaking performances. We look forward to seeing you all there.
Tickets are available at $10 for adults and $5 for students, and can be purchased at the door. |
With the onset of Adar II, many students and faculty members have been engaged in a flurry of activity to prepare for next week's Purim celebration. Thank you to the scores of families who have contributed to the annual Mishloach Manot fundraiser; on the morning of Purim, we will announce how much money we have raised for Mazon.
Here's a preview of next week's festivities:
Wednesday:
Va'Ad members, Va'Ad Tikkun Olam members, and Purim committee members will gather after school to create 200 mishloach manot packages, one for each family in our community. We thank Jewel-Osco for donating the 36 dozen kosher hamentaschen that will be included in the mishloach manot.
Thursday:
Thursday is Ta'anit Esther, a fast day. As a reminder, neither breakfast nor lunch will be served at school. After school, pick up your family's mishloach manot package.
Friday:
Truly the best day of the entire school year, Purim is a time of great festivity at CJHS. We'll have the craziest tefillah of the year, followed by a delicious seudah and hilarious spiels. Afterward, we'll head out into the community for our annual Tikkun Olam projects, fulfilling our obligation of matanot l'evyonim, giving gifts to the poor. Wear a costume in the morning, but bring a change of clothing (closed-toe shoes and long pants) for the afternoon. Everyone will need to bring a bag lunch, too.
From recruiting Megillah readers to coordinating the costume contest, from developing the seudah menu to mapping out the routes to our Tikkun Olam project locations, the students on the Purim committee are working diligently with our faculty to ensure that Purim at CJHS is a resounding success!
Purim Dance:
CJHS will host its 2008 "Old School" Purim Dance from 8:45-11:00 p.m., March 22. Dress is dressy casual from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's. Tickets are available in advance for $15 ($20 at the door) and may be purchased from Rachel Braun. For further information, click here.

LISHMA at CJHS held its second session last night, maintaining the momentum of presenting thought-provoking topics and excellent educators. Last night's program featured Rabbi Michael Balinsky of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School with a response by CJHS's Director of Religious Life Rabbi Elliot Goldberg on ''What Makes a Text Sacred." Rabbi Balinsky explored the "transition from God to text veneration" in Jewish thought and practice, juxtaposing the evolution of textual sanctity with the "gradual disappearance of God from the Biblical scene." His historical-thematic approach was greatly complemented by that of Rabbi Goldberg, whose response revolved around the "practical utility of sanctity" and the charge to "find the sacred anew and re-introduce it into our lives as individuals and as members of a community". A large and appreciative audience found the lectures of the highest worth. |
|
Together with representatives from Universal High School, our Muslim partner, Rachel Braun and Rabbi Barkan gave a presentation about our interfaith partnership to the Jewish Council of Urban Affairs' Nadiv Fellows, a group of social justice interns teaching in Jewish schools throughout the Chicagoland Jewish community. The next interfaith event will take place on Tuesday, March 18 after school at Universal High School. For more information, please contact Vanessa Youshaei or Sydni Cole. |

Students Perform in American "Pi"dol!
On Friday, March 14th (3.14) students celebrated Pi day, named after the famous transcendental number.
Students wrote poems, songs, or sayings in which the numbers of letters in each word corresponded to the digits of Pi. Students then performed their masterpieces in CJHS's own version of American "Pi"dol!
The prize - to throw a pie at a math teacher!

Participants Jordy Shapiro, David Weltman, Sophie Massey, Jessica Rubens, Ari Frankel, Yaakov Calamaro and Alex Kosarev read poems and Rachel Garfinkel and Joel Pachefsky recited

the Greek alphabet and the many digits of p.

Congratulations to Jessica Rubens and Ari Frankel for winning the contest and to Mrs. Shira Eliaser for gracefully taking the pie in her face!
Huge thanks to Mr. Rose for hosting; to Mr. Pomeranz, Dr. Miller, and Mrs. Agbodza for judging; and to everyone else who participated!
Note: 3.14 is also Albert Einstein's birthday! Happy Birthday, Al!
