Lishma Debuts at CJHS;
Next Session on Thursday, March 13

Why is it acceptable to include the "In God We Trust" motto on our money? Does God belong in the religious domain alone, or does God have a place in other social and ethical realms? Thursday evening, February 28, CJHS's Scholar in Residence, Dr. Zohar Raviv, answered this question - and many other probing questions about philosophy, theology, and religion - as he inaugurated CJHS's community-wide adult education series, "Lishma at CJHS." At the opening session, entitled "The American Declaration of Independence and the Ten Commandments," Dr. Raviv and Professor Steven Kaplan of Hebrew University examined the subject matter on an intellectual level seldom encountered outside a university classroom. "Lishma at CJHS" chair Rochelle Katz welcomed the audience of 180 that filled our sanctuary to absolute capacity and listened intently to every word.

At the end of the session, the two educators fielded questions from audience members - including CJHS students and English Department Chair Dale Griffith, who will present the third "Lishma at CJHS" session on April 9. "We were thrilled with the caliber of questions that were posed at the event," says Dr. Ted Schaffner, Interim Head of School, "especially from our students. I believe these questions reflect the excellence of both the Judaic and general studies programs at CJHS and the tremendous insight of our student body."

Three more sessions are scheduled for this year, and Dr. Raviv is already hard at work planning next year's series. At the next session, on Thursday, March 13 at 7:30, Rabbi Michael Balinsky and CJHS Director of Religious Life Rabbi Elliot Goldberg will examine "What Makes a Text Sacred?" This will be CJHS's largest production to date, featuring over 25 talented student performers.The cast and crew are hard at work, rehearsing after school and on Sundays to ensure a truly outstanding production.

CJHS Springs Into Sports

Though you may not be able to tell from the weather, the spring sports season is underway at CJHS, with a record 75 student-athletes participating on five sports teams. Due to overwhelming interest, there are two Ultimate Frisbee teams this season. Led by versatile Coach Bob Cogan and Coach Jeff Rosenberg, the teams will compete in the 30-team Ultimate Chicago high school league. Men's Tennis enters its seventh season with the largest and most experienced team ever. With Coach Stu Shyman at the helm, this team anticipates having a winning season against local public and private high schools. The first match is April 1 against Vernon Hills High School. In its second season under the leadership of Coach Gina Cohen, the Women's Soccer team looks forward to interscholastic contests for the first time. Women's Badminton has also been introduced this year. Under the direction of Coach Nancy Dorfman-Schwartz, team members will hone their skills and seek to play interscholastic contests later in the season.

We're always looking for talented, experienced coaches in all sports. If you're interested, please contact athletic director Tim Cohen at 847.423.5491.

Art Class Learns About Street Art in Jerusalem

Mrs. Snyder's Studio Art class had a guest lecturer this week, Judy Rosenberg, who showed a slide presentation about the history and significance of Street Art in Jerusalem. The presentation, arranged through BJE, was intended to familiarize the students with graffiti artwork. CJHS students are creating a permanent sculpture with their own ideas of positive graffiti that will hang in the art room.

CJHS Rabbis Teach at 2008 Koach Kallah

The annual Koach Kallah (Koach is Conservative Judaism's college outreach program) was held at Northwestern University last weekend. On Friday, Rabbi Elliot Goldberg and Rabbi Robyn Fryer Bodzin taught students from college campuses across the country as part of a morning Torah lishma session. Rabbi Fryer Bodzin's session, entitled "Making a Minyan in an Internet World," explored a recent teshuva about whether one may say kaddish and be counted in a minyan over the Internet. Rabbi Goldberg's session, "Bet Hillel, Bet Shammai, and the College Campus: An Exploration of Contrasting Approaches to Communal Engagement" explored two rabbinic schools of thought about how to engage the Jewish community, with an eye towards how each might apply to the college campus today.
