Teacher Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
CJHS history teacher Mr. Harvey Gross spent Martin Luther King Day with eighth grade students at Solomon Schechter Day School in Northbrook, sharing his recollections of Dr. King and the civil rights movement.
Mr. Gross told students about participating in the historic march on Washington in 1963, hearing Dr. King's famous "I have a Dream" speech, and taking part in "Freedom Summer," a project that brought young people from the north to Mississippi to register African American voters. That summer was the only time in his life when he felt endangered by his religion, said Mr. Gross. Three of the volunteers - two of them Jews - were murdered.
When asked why so many Jews were involved in the civil rights movement, Mr. Gross credited the teachings and values of Judaism. "Our tradition teaches us to stand up for what is right," he said. "We believe in Tikkun Olam and understand that to save one life is to save the world."

Mr. Harvey Gross is joined by senior Josh Warshawsky
and SSDS students. |

Faculty Attend SSDSA Conference
This week, Rabbis Elliot Goldberg and Ruven Barkan joined more than 60 heads of school, campus rabbis, principals, and Jewish studies directors from Solomon Schechter day schools across the country in Las Vegas at the Solomon Schechter day schools' three-day biennial conference. The program, "Spirited and Spiritual Leadership: Leading from the Inside Out," focused on the educators' own spiritual growth and the challenge of creating a school environment that fosters the spiritual life of teachers, students and families. Among the presenters were Merle Feld, a renowned poet and teacher of writing as a spiritual practice; Dr. Saul Wachs, professor, mentor, and consultant to the Schechter Association; and CJHS's Rabbi Barkan. |

Annual Mole Contest Concludes
Following a basic pattern supplied by their teacher, Mr. Ron Urick, CJHS chemistry students used humor, wit, and skill to create themed "moles." A "mole" is a quantitative application of chemistry, used to predict amounts involved in any chemical reaction. The contest judges - former CJHS chemistry students, current faculty and staff - had a tough time selecting a winner from among all the cleverly conceived and expertly constructed moles.
Congratulations to the following 2007 winners:
First Place:
Rebecca Silverman
"How the Grinch Mole Christmas"
Victoria Aron
"Molett Shop"
Second Place:
Max Abecassis
"Molebile Warming"
Jamie Levin
"Moler-blader"

Dani Wolf
"American I-Mole"
Third Place:
Jessica Silverman
"The Moledan Gate Bridge"
