The Class of 2008 Embarks on the 3rd Annual Senior Israel Experience (S.I.E.)

They boarded the plane on New Year's Eve and began the new year in Israel! Twenty-three members of CJHS's senior class, accompanied by Drs. Schaffner and Raviv are currently visiting friends and relatives on a free Shabbat weekend. During their first weeks in Israel, the class of 2008 explored issues related to security, borders, conflict and coexistence in Jerusalem; volunteered in the soup kitchen of Chazon Yesahaya; learned to play the darbuka (a middle eastern drum); surveyed the Lebanon border in and around kibbutz Malkiyah (where Israeli troops entered Lebanon during the summer of 2006); experienced the complexities of life in and around the green line and security fence in Wadi Ara; and visited our Partnership 2000 sister city of Kiryat Gat. We look forward to hearing stories and seeing pictures upon their return.

CJHS would like to thank Arnie Harris for his work toward establishing the Senior Israel Experience Scholarship Fund. This year, 40% of the participants received financial support in order to participate. CJHS and its Board of Directors are committed to ensuring that no student will be prevented from participating in the experience due to financial need. CJHS thanks the following individuals who made contributions to the fund:

Nancy and Maury Fertig

Kim and Stuart Frankenthal

Patti and Michael Frazin

Nina and Arnie Harris

Laurie and Andrew Hochberg

Wendy and Danny Kahn

Ron Lavin

The Jack and Goldie Wolfe Miller Foundation

Debbie and Adam Winick

Kol Hakavod to Vanessa Youshaei '08 and her brother, Jonathon, who recently received the Small-Alper Incentive Grant awarded to Panim el Panim alumni to facilitate a social service project. This grant was given to six students in order to encourage engagement in community service and activism after returning home from a PANIM program. Vanessa and Jonathon used the grant money to establish The Charity Stripe, an organization that collects and sells sports memorabilia to raise money for a tutoring program.

Read about The Charity Stripe on page four of the Fall 2007 PANIM Newsletter. (You may see another familiar face or two in the Summer JAM pictures on page three; Rachel Braun '09 and Rachel Binstock '09 participated in PANIM's Summer JAM this year.)

for Chai Lifeline

For many weeks, sophomore Jeremy Hipps '10 and his father have been raising money for Chai Lifeline while they train for the ING Miami Half-Marathon. Yasher koach to you, the CJHS community, for rising to the challenge and contributing to this worthy cause. In the last two days, $1000 has been donated, pushing Jeremy and Mr. Hipps far above their $3,600 fundraising commitment to Chai Lifeline, an international organization that provides year-round emotional, social, and financial support to more than 3,000 children and their families each year.

With 16 days until the race, it's not too late to make a donation. Please contribute by visiting Jeremy's personal Team Lifeline Website.

Fine Arts Showcased in Community

The CJHS jazz ensemble will be playing at the Response Center benefit at the Music Institute of Chicago, in Evanston, on February 26, 2008. This organization services over 10,000 adolescents and their family each year. CJHS is proud to be part of this great endeavor.

CJHS students will be on stage with Rick Reacht, popular singer of Jewish music, at Temple Beth El on January 26. They will be performing The Hope with Rick. This is quite a unique experience for our students as they are the only high school group asked to perform with him.

The CJHS photography class will have a show at The Art Center of Highland Park beginning February 4. A reception is planned and everyone is welcome to attend. The exhibit will be up for one month.gallery

Teachers to Attend Brandeis Research Conference

Rabbi Elliot Goldberg, Rabbi Robyn Fryer Bodzin and Yoni Pomeranz will represent CJHS at a research conference on January 27-28 at Brandeis University called Teaching Rabbinic Literature: Bridging Scholarship and Pedagogy. The event, organized by the Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education at Brandeis, invites academics and practitioners to come together to discuss the teaching of Talmud. CJHS was awarded a grant to bring a team to the conference. The grant application was one of nine accepted from across the country in a highly competitive process. Yasher koach to Yoni Pomeranz for writing the grant. Rabbi Goldberg will be presenting a paper entitled, "From Vision to Pedagogy: The Teaching of Talmud in the Jewish Day School Setting" at a plenary session during the conference.

New Ways for Jewish Teens to get Involved!

Turn the summer for a teen in 8th-10th grade you know from ordinary to extraordinary at Camp TOV August 11th -15th or August 18th -22nd . In one week they will help the hungry, visit the elderly, and assist the environment, all while having fun, and meeting new teens. In addition high school students can earn a TOV Teen Fellowship by volunteering at least 18 hours through JUF's Tikkun Olam Volunteer Network (TOV) and Jewish Federation affiliated agencies. The Fellowship program includes a kickoff event in the fall, group and individual volunteer opportunities throughout the year including teen mitzvah days and J-Serve, a national of day of Jewish service, and an exciting closing event in May. Through earning a TOV Teen Fellowship, Jewish teens will connect with each other and their community as they make a difference in the Chicagoland area. For more information contact Brett Klugman, Program Coordinator, Teen Volunteer Initiatives at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, 312.357.4928 or email Brett Klugman.
