This evening of dance, music, theatre, and art will highlight the work done by our students over the past semester. We invite parents, Board members, and community members to attend this production. US Politics Club Discusses Healthcare Reform
Members of the US Politics club spent Sunday evening watching Michael Moore's film Sicko and listening to a rebuttal of the film by CJHS parent and board member Dr. Ron Silver. In Sicko Michael Moore contends that the United States should look to Canada, France, England and even Cuba to reform the healthcare system. Dr. Silver strongly disagreed with the film explaining that those countries have long waiting lists for many essential procedures, ration medical care and fail to incentivize their physicians thus discouraging optimal treatment. He agreed that there is a serious problem of the medically uninsured and supports affordable health insurance rather than socialized medicine.
A special thank you to the Frankel family for hosting the event, and to Dr. Silver for addressing the club.
The next USPC event will be held February 5 after school to watch the results of the Illinois primaries. For more information, contact Esther Lowe, Ari Frankel or USPC advisor Ms. Marcus.

Rabbi Vernon Kurtz Comes to CJHS
CJHS and the GIAC (Gender Identity Awareness Club) hosted Rabbi Vernon Kurtz, senior rabbi of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, to engage in a dialogue with students and faculty about the halakhic (Jewish legal) process of the Conservative movement. After describing the halakhic process in a general sense, Rabbi Kurtz described his own experience on the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards during the more than decade long deliberations on human sexuality and homosexuality. The session was both intimate and informative as students were given ample opportunity to ask questions of Rabbi Kurtz regarding his experiences and the process as a whole.
Thank you to Rabbi Fryer, GIAC's faculty advisor, and Seth Berkman, GIAC's chairperson, for this wonderful opportunity. |
