Junior Class Inspired Upon Return from Panim El Panim
CJHS juniors attended the White House Candle Lighting Ceremony and lobbied Congressional representatives during Panim El Panim, December 2-5 in Washington. This is CJHS's fifth year participating in Panim, a national program that encourages high school students to apply Jewish values to social action and empowers them to be active in the political process.
CJHS 11th graders attended the seminar with students from the Abraham Joshua Heschel High School in New York City and the Herzl RMHA Upper School in Denver.
The seminar focused on issues of immigration and homelessness. Students heard from many speakers, including individuals who have emerged from homelessness. The 11th graders brought winter clothing items and toiletries and passed them out to members of the homeless community.
The seminar culminated in a trip to the Hill where students lobbied according to their congressional districts. Groups met with Rep. Mark Kirk, Rep. Jan Schakowsky and an aide to Senator Barack Obama. The students lobbied issues pertaining to U.S.-Israel relations, immigration, the environment, healthcare, genocide in Darfur, social security, and the obesity epidemic.
Thank you to Reps. Kirk and Schakowsky for personally meeting with our students. Thank you to Senator Obama's office for arranging a meeting and tickets to the gallery where students watched members of the House of Representatives vote to close the proceedings. Thank you to members of the junior class, who were terrific during the seminar, and to faculty members Rabbi Ruven Barkan, Dr. Roberta Miller, and Ms. Sharna Marcus for chaperoning the conference. Also, thank you to the Community Foundation for Jewish Education for allocating a subsidy to this program. |

Eggs Alive!
The excitement was palpable last Friday as students and teachers alike gathered to watch the annual CJHS Egg Drop contest. Mrs. Eliaser's physics classes have been working for weeks to design the perfect container to protect a raw egg in its fall from the 15-foot balcony down to the first floor. Without access to parachutes or cushioning material, students had to rely on their knowledge of momentum and collision forces to create protective crumple zones. A noteworthy eight out of thirteen eggs survived the experience.
The container belonging to juniors Rachel Garfinkel, Victor Abecassis, and Danny Silver not only survived the first fall but several subsequent falls, and only sustained damage when it was drop-kicked against a wall by the excited experimentalists. Junior Tova Goldberg, who worked with Donna Abisdris and Jenna Corush on one of the other successful models, tested her container the day before while babysitting in the community, much to the excitement of the kids, who insisted on building egg drop models of their own. The less successful groups consoled themselves by poaching their cracked eggs in the microwave for lunch. |

Seven Athletic Teams Shine in Winter Season
Basketball Success Continues
The CJHS Basketball season is underway, and all four teams are winners. Despite missing the juniors to Panim El Panim this week, all teams fared well. In front of a huge Saturday night home crowd, the women's A team defeated a shocked Ida Crown team. Thanks to a fourth-quarter run by senior Yael Schwartz, the A team (with a lot of help from the B team) defeated a tough Northtown Academy team on Tuesday for the first time ever. The women's B team faces New Jerusalem Baptist at home Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, the men's JV basketball team soundly defeated Roycemore, while an almost entirely freshman varsity squad took the Roycemore varsity to overtime. The JV squad and varsity squads both defeated Universal Hgh School on Thursday night. This Saturday, December 8, the men's JV and varsity teams take on rival Yeshiva at home at 7:30 and 9:00 p.m. Come to the games, support your teams, and show your TIGER PRIDE!
Bowling Team Season Progressing
The Ten-Pin Tigers, our bowling team, continues to make marked progress. Is it due to those cool bowling shirts or the expert coaching of Dr. Auslander?!Congratulations to seniors Isaac Simon and Kayce Miller for winning the intra-squad pairs tournament. Next Thursday, December 13, the team will compete against the CJHS teachers in its first annual Faculty Bowling Challenge. Members of the faculty will test their bowling skills against the Ten Pin Tigers Bowling Team. The event will be held at Brunswick Bowl on Waukegan, just south of Lake Cook Road.
Swim Team Training Continues
CJHS swim team members are making marked progress with thrice-weekly water practices and weekly dry land workouts. The focus is on improving technique, speed, and conditioning. The team has had three time trials and several intra-squad races thus far. The swimmers hope to soon compete against other swim club members.
Dance Team Debuts December 12
The CJHS dance team is putting the final touches on its routines as it prepares to perform at home basketball games. Come watch the debut performance at the December 12 men's home game against Cristo Rey. After watching this talented team, everyone will come away more spirited!

Acclaimed Middle-East Analyst Presents to CJHS Students

CJHS recently hosted Mr. Nir Boms, an acclaimed Middle-East analyst and columnist from Israel. Mr. Boms came to the U.S. to testify before Congress on research about the use of textbooks in Iran to propagate anti-Western, anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiment. His articles appear regularly in The Wall Street Journal, The Jerusalem Post, and many other periodicals.
Mr. Boms appeared at CJHS at the request of our Scholar in Residence, Dr. Zohar Raviv; he offered highlights from his task force's research and emphasized the role of educational institutions in fostering critical thought and respect toward different cultures and peoples: "The difference between education and dangerous indoctrination is subtle at times but profound nonetheless and can impact all of us," Boms told students, "The type of education you receive here is far from common practice in certain parts of the world, and I am glad to realize that you don't take it for granted." |
