CJHS Alumni Return for Inaugural Alumni Day

More than a dozen CJHS graduates attended the school's first Alumni Day, just prior to Thanksgiving. The alumni, who hailed from the Classes of 2005, 2006, and 2007, participated in tefillah and spoke to the students and faculty about the value of their CJHS experience. Following tefillah, alumni joined the rest of the school community for a special breakfast and took a tour of the new campus.

"CJHS provided a great foundation for my Jewish identity," said Jeremy Cogan, '07, currently a student at Indiana University.  "That foundation has been important to me as I have become involved in the Jewish community on campus. CJHS really prepares you to be a leader. I want to thank the school for that."

Ari Gore, '05, a student at University of Maryland, spoke about the opportunities present in (and unique to) the CJHS experience: "The teachers care about you. They really care, and you should take advantage of that. When you're in college, in a 300-person lecture, the professor isn't going to care about you as an individual, but thanks to CJHS, you will have a strong voice, and you will make yourself known to that professor so that he does care. You should know how privileged you are to go to school at CJHS. Most people don't get the opportunity for this education."

The seven Class of 2007 alumni currently in Israel recently gathered and posed for this picture.

Sophomores Participate in AIPAC HIgh School Summit

Three CJHS sophomores recently participated in the American Israel Public Affairs Committee High School Summit in Washington D.C.  Hannah Miller, Rebecca Silverman, and Danielle Wolf represented CJHS and heard speakers present perspectives about the state of the Middle East, specifically the Iranian Nuclear Program and the Annapolis Conference.   They joined students from around the country, and attended workshops onlobbying, fundraising, and public speaking.  The summit culminated in a lobbying session with Richard Goldberg, assistant to U.S. Representative Mark Kirk of Illinois.

Juniors Head to Washington D.C. for Panim Leadership Program

This Sunday, the junior class will travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in Panim el Panim, an intensive four-day program that includes sessions with lawmakers and informal educators, as well as a tour of the nation's capital. The seminar deals with Jewish perspectives on public policy, leadership, and Israel.  Panim is an important element of CJHS's  junior year curriculum because of its relevance to U.S. History, Jewish Communal Leadership, and other themes during the school year. The policy issue for this particular seminar is Immigration and Refugees.

The juniors will be chaperoned by Rabbi Fryer, Rabbi Barkan, and Dr. Miller, and by Ms. Marcus, who has taken CJHS students to Panim for the last five years. In addition, Lindsay Seidenberg, '07, will serve on the Panim staff for this seminar.

Learn more about the policy issue.

U. Of I. Philosophy Professor Holds Bilingual Discussion with Hebrew Students

Gvt. Moskovich's Hebrew VII class recently participated in a discussion about the essence of freedom, the main topic the students are currently studying.  The discussion was led by Dr. Sam Fleischacker, philosophy professor at University of Illinois and parent of current student Noa Fleischacker. The discussion was bilingual as Dr. Fleischacker fielded students' questions and comments in Hebrew, but used English to convey the complexity of different types of social freedom. "The discussion proved to be fruitful and enjoyable as new ideas and challenges to the ideas of freedom were presented to and debated by the students," said sophomore Ari Eisenstadt, following the presentation.

New York Times best-selling author Robert Kurson visited Dr. Miller's senior English class to introduce his book, Shadow Divers. The class is studying narrative nonfiction and Mr. Kurson is hailed as the master of this genre. The class is now immersed in the text, and Mr. Kurson will return in a few weeks when the students have finished reading the book. In addition, each student is writing a narrative nonfiction short story which will be reviewed by Mr. Kurson who resides in Northbrook. CJHS thanks Keith and Marci Shapiro for helping to arrange this opportunity for our school.
