The air was full of excitement and energy on Wednesday as CJHS students rushed to greet each other on the first day of school at their new home. Their arrival was met with cheering and fanfare as they began to survey their surroundings. Students checked out the cafeteria and marveled at the magnificent Beit Knesset (sanctuary). Upperclassmen were awed by the fact that for the first time in their high school life, there were stairs!
The school day began with tefillah (morning prayers). Students and faculty filled the Beit Knesset, and the sound of the opening niggun, a wordless melody, sent chills throughout the room. Following the niggun, there was a pause, and a still, clear voice said, "Amud shtayim. Page two." With a few words of welcome from Mr. Bruce Scher and Rabbi Goldberg, the school year began.
The day was packed with activities - tours, orientation programs, school pictures, the debut of the school's new lunch program, and an abbreviated class schedule. There was even a visit from a Chicago Tribune reporter and photographer to chronicle this important event for the Chicago community. Before anyone realized it, the first day of school had ended. Students, faculty, administrators and staff left CJHS filled with a sense of pride, accomplishment and excitement for the future.
"Wednesday, August 29, 2007 will be recorded as one of the most important days in the life of CJHS," says Dr. Ted Schaffner, Head of School. "On this day, CJHS welcomed more than 130 students from 19 communities throughout the Chicagoland area, representing the complete spectrum of Jewish observance."
"We are grateful to everyone who helped turn the vision of a permanent home for CJHS into a reality," added Lynn Wiznitzer, President of the CJHS Board of Directors. "We especially want to thank Dr. Mark Levin and the entire site committee for making sure that we reached this day on schedule. We look forward to welcoming the entire Chicagoland community to our Grand Opening celebration on Sunday, September 30."
Please join us for our Grand Opening Celebration on Sunday, September 30. To help us plan for this important occasion, especially if you are joining us for the walk, please make sure to complete the response information and send it back to us today. |

We are excited to announce that our Community-wide Grand Opening Celebration will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2007. The celebration will take place during Chol Hamoed Sukkot, a festive time for all of us. It will be free of charge and is being chaired by CJHS parents Kim Frankel, Sandy Levin and Lori Rabinowitz.
8:00 a.m. Join us for a special service for Chol Hamoed Sukkot
Rabbi Goldberg will officiate at a special service at Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation (NSJC), 7800 W. Lyons Street in Morton Grove. Feel free to bring your lulav and etrog. Following the service, refreshments will be set up outside the synagogue. Everyone at the service, and all of the walkers, will be able to prepare healthy snacks to take on the walk.
9:15 a.m. Journey with us to our new home
Please join us on a Torah procession from our Morton Grove home to our new, permanent home in Deerfield. The walk, which is being chaired by Miriam Rudolph and Inez Altman, will be approximately 9.5 miles. The walkers will stop for a light dairy lunch (provided by CJHS) around 12:30 p.m., before they reach our new site. There will be a police escort and a medical van.
1:00 p.m. Community-wide celebration
The entire community is invited to join us as we greet the Torah procession and rejoice as the Torahs are taken to their new home. This festive celebration will include simcha dancing and a brief program under an open tent. Following the program, the community is invited to tour the building and enjoy dairy desserts. Parking is available. Tours will be given every 20 minutes and will continue until everyone who would like to see the school has had the opportunity to do so. Mincha will be held around 3:30 p.m.
