Huge crowd attends CJHS performance of Romeo and Juliet

Romeo (Jacob Kanter) is devastated by the death of his love, Juliet (Rachel Hilker).

A crowd larger than the drama club ever anticipated attended CJHS' performance of Romeo and Juliet. Students, faculty, parents, family members, board members, and teenagers from many other high schools attended the performance on Nov. 22 at Beth Hillel Congregation/B'nai Emunah.

The cast and crew of Romeo and Juliet would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone whose hard work and dedication made this show possible.

Thank you to our faithful parents, for your endless encouragement, support, and chauffeur service.

Thank you to Harvey Gross, Bruce Scher, Joan Waxman, and Rabbi Elliot Goldberg for their help with facilities; to Shira Koffman and Shira Eliaser for designing the posters and programs; and a very special thank you to Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah for the use of their performance space.

Most of all, we thank our dedicated director, Ron Ben Joseph, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Very special thanks go to the following families who hosted our students overnight and for Friday evening's meal:

Spirit Week at CJHS

To celebrate the beginning of the CJHS basketball season, the Va'ad coordinated a spirit week at CJHS with theme days and programming designed to build excitement for the women's and men's teams.

On Dec. 1, students and faculty, wearing their CJHS attire, attended a pep rally where members of the CJHS sports teams were introduced by MCs senior Jacob Kanter and junior Benji Derman. The pep rally was followed by a basketball game with the first half featuring members of the women's faculty vs. the CJHS women's basketball team. The second half was played by members of the men's faculty vs. the men's basketball team. Thank you to senior Rachel Hilker who began the program with beautiful renditions of the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikvah. Congratulations to faculty members Rabbi Barkan, Mr. Blumenthal, Ms. Giltlin, Rabbi Goldberg, Mrs. Keefe, Ms. Jacobson-Maisels, Ms. Marcus, Mrs. Redman, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Zaff for surviving the experience.

Yasher koach to the Va'ad for planning the week-long event which included students and faculty wearing their favorite college t-shirt or sweatshirts; an International Diversity Unification Gathering Day on Nov. 30 where students and faculty wore the native dress of peoples from different countries and were treated to international food during lunch. The Va'ad ended the exciting, but tiring week with pajama day. Thank you especially to Academic Dean Mr. Scher and Student Activities Coordinator Mr. Gross for helping the Va'ad coordinate the event.

Watch for falling eggs

Junior Vicki Neiman stands with seniors Rachel Bobrick and Becky Kupchan as they show off their physics project.

Mrs. Eliaser's physics class held the CJHS Second Annual Egg Drop Contest on Dec. 1. For the previous week, students had been pitting their wits against the forces of nature as they attempted to design containers in which a raw egg could survive a 24-foot drop. As part of a larger unit on collisions and momentum, students were investigating the ways in which impact force could be reduced in cases of high- speed collisions. "F = m*delta-v divided by delta-t; it's as simple as that!" explained junior Daniel Bier to Officer Dan Sowa, who arrived on the scene with the firefighters of Morton Grove's 5th Engine Co., who came to assist the students in dropping their containers off the roof of the school. The two teams to produce winning containers were juniors Lanie Abisdris, Shayna Flink, and Ashley Silver, and juniors Avram Pachter, Daniel Bier, and Jason Wiznitzer.
