CJHS E-News: Fifty Students Hop Through Sukkahs in Skokie

 October 21, 2005 / 18 Tishri 5766

Shabbat Shalom ,

Even though there were predictions for poor weather, the sky remained clear and the air crisp as more than half of the CJHS student body walked from house to house on Oct. 20 during the school's annual Sukkah Hop. Students enjoyed barekas at the Magid home, pasta and salad at the Pogrund home, and dessert at the Silverman home. While walking between houses, students puzzled over a game of Faculty Bingo, trying to determine the various adventures of our faculty and staff. Thank you to the Magid, Pogrund, and Silverman families for hosting our students, to Rabbi Dickman, Ms. Altman, Mrs. Snyder, Mr. Gross, and Ms. Musin for serving as chaperones, and to the Va'ad for planning this event.

Fall Shabbaton Forms Flying In

Students are turning in Shabbaton registration forms on a daily basis, but the deadline is nearing. Registration forms are due back to Ms. Musin by Monday, Oct. 24 so that appropriate logistical arrangements can be made.

Our annual Fall Shabbaton will be held November 11-12 at Beth Hillel Congregation B'nai Emunah in Wilmette. It will be a relaxed opportunity for students and staff to get to know each other better while spending Shabbat together. The Shabbaton begins immediately following school on Friday, November 11 and concludes after a post-Shabbat social activity on Saturday night, November 12.

Call-In Dates for Parent-Teacher Conferences

To make requests for conference reservations, families with freshmen, transfer students, or two or more siblings should call on Monday, Oct. 24. All other families should call in requests on Thursday, Oct. 27. Please leave a message at 847-423-5979 or email mplotnik@chicagojhs.com.

Breakfast Sponsorships

Thank you to a special CJHS Family for sponsoring our student breakfast on Friday, October 21. On Monday, October 24, breakfast will be sponsored by Andrea & Jeffrey Meltzer, Marci Dickman & Ralph Schwartz, and Tami & Reuben Warshawsky in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of Sandy Starkman and Larry Pachter. Thank you to all for their continuing support of our breakfast program.

Religious Life at CJHS

Matthew Hass, Jennifer Feldman, Lilli Flink, Matthew Silverman, Abby Landis, and Eli Miller led tefillah. Rabbi Fryer, Avra Shapiro, and Hannah Rosenbaum read Torah.

The atmosphere at tefillah was markedly different this week, as students and faculty entered the sanctuary with lulavim and etrogim, chanted Hallel, and walked around the sanctuary for Hoshanot. Moadim L’Simcha...May you have a joyous Sukkot!

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!
