Shabbat Shalom,
CJHS Students Earn AP Scholar Awards

Each spring, many CJHS students take AP examinations through the College Board's Advanced Placement Program after completing college-level courses at CJHS. Each fall, the College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students' performance on the AP exams. We are pleased to announce that twelve CJHS students -- eleven members of the Class of 2006 and one member of the Class of 2007 -- recently earned AP Scholar Awards.

  • Daniel Bier, Benjamin Derman, Ron Gejman, Linda Levin, and Ashley Silver qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
  • Shayna Flink earned the AP Scholar with Honor Award, granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams.
  • Alana Abisdris, Renana Fox, Sandy Johnston, Yael Kiken, Daniel Peaceman, and Jacob Shapiro qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher.

World Watch Established at CJHS

Students from all grades met during lunch on Thursday, October 19 to discuss the establishment of a Jewish World Watch chapter at CJHS. Jewish World Watch is a powerful coalition of Los Angeles synagogues and schools that educates, advocates, and collects resources on behalf of world conflicts, particularly genocides. This year, CJHS students will continue to speak out on Darfur by bringing in speakers, selling Darfur t-shirts, making calls to the White House, and attending rallies. CJHS students will also try to establish Jewish World Watch chapters at their synagogues. Yasher koach to Nat Sufrin for his hard work and dedication to the development of this important initiative.

Athletics in Full Gear
cross-country

This week, CJHS concluded an outstanding fall athletic season! CJHS added two new teams this fall and had record participation.

Cross-Country
The inaugural Coed Cross Country team ended a stellar season at the Latin Invitational meet in Chicago's Lincoln Park. In frigid conditions, both the women's and men's teams finished second out of thirteen teams. Most CJHS runners brought home medals and ribbons for their individual performances, and everyone improved their two-mile times. CJHS acknowledges our 15 runners for their daily dedication to this grueling sport, and we thank Coach Cogan for his expertise and guidance.

Women's Tennis
After a very rainy start to the season, the Women's Tennis team was finally able to participate in several matches. Wins over Maine East and Northtown Academy were a great way to finish the season. CJHS acknowledges our tennis players and Coach Finfer for another terrific tennis season.

Soccer
Coed Soccer has become the most popular sport at CJHS this fall, with close to 20 students showing up regularly for Thursday scrimmages against a local AYSO team. Led by Coaches Rabbi Barkan, Cohen, and Robinson, the team had fun this fall while improving its skills. CJHS hopes to have enough women interested in playing in the spring to field an interscholastic soccer team.

Winter Sports: Basketball and Dance Team
With the fall sports season over, winter athletic team practices have begun, also with record participation. Approximately 40 CJHS students play on CJHS's three basketball teams, and the dance team, Chai Girls, has18 members. CJHS is proud to announce that this will be the first year that our basketball teams will participate in the Illinois State Tournament. Our athletes play best when they are cheered on by their fans, and we have an exciting season of nearly 60 basketball games! Check out our game schedule at http://www.cjhs.org/pdf/bballschedule.pdf. We hope to see you there! (Please note: basketball practice is cancelled this Sunday ONLY because court time is unavailable).

Ultimate Frisbee
Coed Ultimate Frisbee is now back at CJHS! For the next three Fridays, the Coed Ultimate Frisbee team will meet after school to scrimmage and work on skill development. In the spring, the team will compete in an eight-week Ultimate Chicago junior league against high school teams from throughout the Chicago area.

Questions? Contact Mr. Cohen, Athletic Director.

CJHS Idol Rehearsals Continue

CJHS Idol is on the way! Rehearsals continue during lunch periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Sunday afternoons. Please check Trumba to see when your group is rehearsing. The Sunday rehearsal schedule is posted at http://www.cjhs.org/pdf/cabsched.pdf.

Mark your calendar for performances on November 19 and 20!

USPC Presents Evening of Desserts

The Second Annual USPC Extravaganza (featuring desserts) will be held Saturday, October 21 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Avidar home in Morton Grove! This year, the U.S. Politics Club will serve the favorite desserts of the most prominent Illinois politicians, including Governor Rod Blagojevich, State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, and Senator Barack Obama. In order to give students a "taste" of each politician, a brief presentation will accompany each dessert. For more information, speak to Leore Avidar. Be sure to save room for dessert!

Students Help Plan and Implement Schechter Shabbatonim

In recent years, CJHS and CHUSY Region USY have partnered with Solomon Schechter Middle School to cultivate student leaders to assist with the planning and implementation of Schechter's Shabbatonim for sixth and eighth graders. This week, CJHS students Eli Miller, Michael Brunwasser, Jenn Hipps, Lilli Flink, Aliza Stein, Sofi Petchersky, Lindsay Seidenberg, Matthew Silverman, Josh Warshawsky and Jacob Stoehr attended the first planning meeting along with CHUSY leadership. (Josh and Jacob also serve on CHUSY's Regional Executive Board.) The students will work together to develop and lead social programming for the SSDS students and enjoy a Shabbat with the Schechter students.

Va'ad Vogue Plans Tie-Dye Day

In honor of Rosh Chodesh Mar Cheshvan (the only month in the Jewish calendar without a holiday), Va'ad Vogue encourages everyone to wear tie-dyed clothing and accessories on Monday, October 23.

Tiny Ninja Theater Comes to CJHS
tiny ninja theater

Dov Weinstein visited CJHS on Thursday, October 19 to present the first mishnah in Masechet Brachot. Mr. Weinstein, a full-time Shakespearian puppeteer with a commitment to Jewish learning, has combined his two great obsessions (Gemara and inch-high plastic ninjas) to create "M'aimatai," a fascinating introduction to the very first mishnah in the Talmud. Using tiny plastic figures, fridge magnets, a huge text, and more, Mr. Weinstein creatively illustrated the Talmudic discussion regarding when one can recite the Shema in the evening. Students, many of whom have studied this mishnah at CJHS, watched as the rabbis of the mishnah and their opinions came to life during the performance. Junior Michael Shapiro said afterward, "The presentation taught me about more than [simply] a page of Talmud; it taught me about how people are truly in love with Talmud."

Thank you to Rabbi Dickman and Rabbi Fryer for bringing Mr. Weinstein to CJHS.

PSAT and PLAN Test Update

CJHS sophomores and juniors took the PSAT at the school on October 18. Score reports will be mailed to CJHS in December and distributed to students by Mr. Scher. Please be aware that PSAT scores are not sent directly to students' home addresses, nor are they available online or by phone. After scores have been distributed, Mr. Scher will schedule a meeting with juniors and their families to help them interpret PSAT score reports and to discuss the other standardized tests (ACT and SAT) required by most colleges as part of the college application process.

A special reminder to sophomores: the PLAN test will be administered at CJHS free of charge on the morning of November 28. Sophomores who have not yet submitted their registration forms should do so promptly.

Enhance Your Shabbat While Supporting the Va'ad

You can bring this sensation to your home by purchasing challah and other treats through the Va'ad's weekly Breadsmith sale. To place an order, fill out the form below and return it along with payment to Geoff Levin, Va'ad Treasurer, by Wednesday of each week. Breadsmith orders are available for pickup on Friday mornings at school. This fundraiser supports social programming throughout the year.
