CJHS Takes Leadership Role at PEJE Conference

Thirteen CJHS Board members and administrative staff attended the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education's Donor/Leadership Assembly in Boston, October 10 - 12. PEJE is a collaborative initiative of major philanthropic partners, whose goal is to strengthen the Jewish day school movement by increasing enrollment in Jewish day schools in North America (www.peje.org)

An extraordinary $45 million gift to a group of day schools in Boston was announced, from several anonymous donors, one of the largest such gifts in North America. Senator Joseph Lieberman shared his views on the state of education in America, and spoke about the importance of day schools to his family. More than 650 people from day schools across the nation attended, bringing back important information on Board development, fundraising and capital campaign financing, secular and Judaic academics, recruitment and marketing.

"We are bringing back knowledge that will be used to benefit CJHS in many areas," said Stewart Flink, Board President. "In addition, it was energizing for CJHS as a leader in the national day school movement of 700 schools and 200,000 students."

Board, parents, friends and administration representing CJHS included Andy Saffir, Stewart and Jennifer Flink, Jane and Nate Pickus, Janet Resnick, Oly Avidar, Cindy Pogrund, Tami Warshawsky, Jeff Dreifuss, Roslyn Stein, Michael Rubin, Rachel Spiro.

Sophomores and juniors take PSAT at CJHS

Academic Dean and Director of College Counseling Mr. Scher
administered the PSAT at CJHS.

CJHS offered the PSATs for the first time on our own campus. About 45 sophomores and juniors took the exam. Results will be available in December.

Seniors and freshmen study mishnah during tefillah

While the rest of CJHS was taking the PSAT, on Oct. 13 the seniors and the freshmen davened together. Director of Religious Life Rabbi Goldberg paired each senior with a freshman and had them study two mishnayot from Pirkei Avot. This learning experience emphasized that the value of integration at CJHS is not just about integration of subject matter, but social integration too.

"As the school gets bigger, the social barriers grow naturally," senior Noam Davidoff said. "But I found it meaningful not only to have the opportunity to interact, but to study, with a freshman."

CFJE presents CJHS juniors with Israel opportunity

William J. Rubin, CFJE executive director and chief operating officer, spoke to CJHS juniors on Oct. 13 about Write on For Israel, a program to train students in Israel advocacy specifically in the area of journalism. Students involved in the program will participate in regular seminars over a two-year period as well as a 10-day Israel experience. CJHS juniors are encouraged to apply for this highly prestigious opportunity.

CJHS seniors and their parents learn the secrets to the Admissions Process

Seniors and their parents attended "Inside the Admissions Office: A look at the College Application Process" on Sept. 27 at CJHS. Featured speakers included Director of College Counseling/Academic Dean Mr. Bruce Scher and Independent College Counselor Mrs. Marybeth Kravets.

CJHS expands tefillah experience

Through the students' dedication, skill and leadership CJHS has established a completely student-run minyan. This year as our school continues to grow we are piloting two new Tefillah initiatives to meet the evolving needs of our community: multiple minyanim and a senior class minyan.

The Multiple Minyanim Program provides an opportunity for the students to choose among different styles of minyanim. The five minyanim follow the principles of the Conservative movement; that is, they fulfill the halachic requirements and are egalitarian. The Multiple Minyan Program will take place every other week on Tuesdays. The program will begin on Oct. 19.

On Wednesdays the seniors daven in their own minyan. This provides the senior class an opportunity to bond as a class and to reflect on the culmination of their high school experience.

CJHS celebrates Chol Hamoed Sukkot
Tefillot on Sukkot was a tradition-filled experience. Waving the lulav and etrog, singing Hallel, Torah reading, Musaf, Hoshanot, and beating the willows imbued the school with the spirit of the Chag. Additionally, students had the opportunity to eat and study in the sukkah, thanks to NSJC.

Area students experience Jewish hospitality in the Sukkah

CJHS students welcomed 30 students from Loyola Academy and the Muslim Education Center for an evening of hospitality and learning about Sukkot on Oct. 4. It was the first Interfaith Youth Core program of this year.

This year's IFYC theme is Good Neighbors in Service. We will strengthen our commitment to being good neighbors by sharing four values common to all three communities: hospitality, the world house, service, and the beloved community. The ‘shared values’ curriculum, which stands at the center of the Interfaith Youth Core’s methodology, entreats each student to consider how his/her own faith engages a chosen value. The students then collaborate to find similarities between the ways each of their diverse traditions engages the value. This ‘shared values’ approach enables students to simultaneously deepen their understanding of their own faiths and expand their comprehension of other traditions.

Accordingly, the Project aims to create a context in which people of all faiths may dialogue and collaborate in the spirit of hospitality. There will be a meeting on October 26 for the leaders of each school to plan the next event. Juniors are welcome to join the participating seniors on this leadership team. For more information about IFYC please contact senior Becky Kupchan or Rabbi in Residence Rabbi Barkan.

The program stressed the importance of students becoming lifetime learning and appreciating the opportunity to grow as both students and as individuals. Bruce Scher, the Director of College Counseling and Academic Dean, presented on these topics and entertained questions from parents and students.
