Debate Team Soundly Defeats Visiting Schools!

The CJHS Debate Team scored an unprecedented victory, winning 13 out of 14 matches in last week's tournament against New Trier and Glenbrook North. The rooms at CJHS were filled last Thursday night with debaters arguing whether a just government should provide health care to all of its citizens. After the exciting victory, faculty advisor Mr. Harvey Gross exclaimed, "I felt very proud of the debaters and I look forward to continued success in the future." The debate team encourages all students, faculty and parents to come and cheer on their classmates at future tournaments.

Va'ad Israel Cooks Up a Storm
vaad israel cuisine

Last Wednesday's Israel Cuisine Night was, by all accounts, amazing! Students worked together to prepare a variety of dishes, including labaneh with za'atar, kibbutz vegetable salad, avocado salad, Druze tabouleh, Moroccan couscous, and a trifle. Once the food was made, students and staff sat gathered for a great meal.

Yasher koach to Lilli Flink, Karen Avidar, and Aliza Stein for planning this exciting event, and thank you to Ms. Bierman and Gvt. Moskovich for all of their help. Thank you to Gvt. Moskovich, Ms. Bierman, and Rabbi Fryer for chaperoning the event and to Rachel Binstock, Rachel Garfinkel, Abby Landis, Karen, Lilli, and Aliza for leading teams of students in the preparation of different recipes. Va'ad Israel would also like to thank the Landis family for donating food for this event.

USPC Prepares Evening of Desserts

Mark your calendars! The Second Annual USPC Extravaganza (featuring desserts) will be held Saturday, October 21 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Avidar home in Morton Grove! This year, USPC will serve the favorite desserts of the most prominent Illinois politicians, including Governor Rod Blagojevich, State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, and Senator Barack Obama. In order to give students a "taste" of each politician, a brief presentation will accompany each dessert. For more information, speak to Leore Avidar. Tickets will be sold for a small fee next week. Be sure to save room for dessert!

CJHS Students and Faculty Speak on High Holidays

Several members of the CJHS community spoke in their congregations on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Sophomore Aaron Weinberg spoke at Temple Beth Israel in Skokie. He spoke about Israel, Chalutzim (OSRUI's summer immersion program), and Israel advocacy. Senior Eli Miller delivered the Israel Bond Appeal at Congregation Beth Shalom in Northbrook on Yom Kippur. The purpose of the speech was to raise awareness about the situation in Israel and to explain the value of Israel Bonds to the country. Ms. Caren Friedman, Assistant Director of Development, delivered a speech at Anshe Emet about the congregation's Young Adult Division.

Freshman Class Elects Representative for Va'ad
vaad

Each spring, a new Va'ad HaStudentim is elected, but the Va'ad isn't complete until elections are held in the fall for a Freshman Representative. Over the past two weeks, the three candidates—Samantha Aisen, Hannah Miller, and Zack Warso—showed their creativity and enthusiasm through posters and excellent speeches on last week's Election Day.

Mazal tov to Hannah Miller on being elected freshman representative. The Va'ad is shown in the picture above.

CJHS Idol Rehearsals Begin

CJHS Idol is on the way! Rehearsals will take place during lunch periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Sundays (after Simchat Torah). Please check Trumba to see when your group is rehearsing. The Sunday rehearsal schedule is posted at http://www.cjhs.org/pdf/cabsched.pdf.

Students Hop Through Sukkot in Deerfield
sukkah hop

The Va'ad Sukkah Hop was a huge success! Over 70 students and faculty members gathered on Monday night to hang out, eat, and walk from sukkah to sukkah in Deerfield. Thank you to Ari Eisenstadt's family, Aviva and Yael Schwartz's family, and Rena Forester's family for their hospitality and for opening their sukkot and homes to us. Also, thank you to the Va'ad for all of their hard work, and to Mr. Cohen, Rabbi Barkan, Rabbi Goldberg, and Ms. Musin for chaperoning the event. Later that evening, faculty and staff hopped over to Ms. Altman's home to enjoy snacks and cider in her sukkah.

CJHS Celebrates Throughout Chol HaMoed
hallel

During the holiday of Sukkot, tefillah was enhanced with the joy of Hallel and Hoshanot; students waved their lulavim and shook their musical instruments as they sang the festive tunes and paraded around the sanctuary. Many classes and meals were held in the sukkah.

Students Accepted to Write On for Israel Program

Congratulations to Avi Coven, Alex Fisher, Ari Glasser, David Weltman, and Vanessa Youshaei on their acceptance to the Write On for Israel program. Write On for Israel is an intensive and exciting two-year program that trains a select group of high school juniors and seniors to become advocates and activists for Israel. During the first year, the fellows attend seminars focusing on the history of Israel, modern Jewish history, facts and myths of the current conflict in Israel, recognizing and countering media bias, and meeting the challenges on college campuses. The seminars are taught by leading professional educators, journalists, and advocates. The year culminates in a ten-day trip to Israel. During the second year of this program, the participants undertake Israel advocacy projects and internships. This is the third year in a row that several CJHS students have been accepted to Write on For Israel, a project of the Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago, JUF News, and the Associated Talmud Torahs, supported by The AVI CHAI Foundation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish United Fund.

Mrs. Eliaser's Dvar Torah on the legacy of Shimon and Levi (Vayishlach/Ki Teitzei/Pinchas) has been published in Leaves From the Garden, an anthology of divrei Torah published by the members of the Egalitarian Minyan of Rogers Park. It will be available on Amazon.com later this month, and all proceeds will go to tzedakah.

Interfaith Youth Core Planning Program

At the first IFYC planning meeting of the year, student leaders from our partner schools—Loyola Academy, Universal High School, and the most recent addition, Morgan Park Academy—came together for an animated brainstorming session to discuss the possibilities for the upcoming year. The CJHS student leaders for IFYC include Sydni Cole, Skye Miller, Vanessa Youshaei, Elli Cohn, Rachel Karp, and Sandy Johnston, who are planning an upcoming interfaith event for the larger CJHS student body.
